E-mail: crsmattoso@yahoo.com The importance of studies with hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values of Crab-eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) is based on the need for health care and maintenance of those populations. This paper has the objective to investigate hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary physiological parameters of the Crab-eating fox, comparing gender and age differences. Blood samples were collected in 2003 from 52 animals of different Zoos in São Paulo state, Brazil; 7mL of blood was used to obtain a complete blood cell count (CBC) and the profile of the serum biochemistry. Moreover, 5mL of urine were collected for analysis. There was no difference in values for male and female animals, as for the CBC and serum biochemistry. Some hematological and serum biochemical parameters were influenced by age, showing significant differences. Urinalysis results were just demonstrated in a descriptive form. The studied values were, RBC 4.35+0.73 x 106 /mL, WBC 7.72+3.66 x 103 /mL (predominance of segmented neutrophils), platelets 227.06+111.58 x 103 /mL, urea 43.06+14.28mg/dL and creatinine 1.03+0.24mg/dL. Hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values obtained in this study can be used as physiological values of the captive Crab-eating Fox. It is possible to conclude that wild species need their own reference values, differentiating animals in captivity from free-ranging animals.

ABSTRACT.- Gonçalves R.C., Rocha A.E.A., Silva A.A., Takahira R.K. & Chiacchio S.B. 2011. [Influence of vitamin E on prophylaxis and treatment of moderate and severe bronchopneumonia in calves.] E-mail: andrezamedvet@yahoo.com.br The natural occurrence of bronchopneumonia in calves and the effect of DL-a-tocopherol in the prophylaxis and treatment of this disease is studied. We evaluated 60 male calves, aged up to 10 days, divided into two groups: GSV (group without vitamin) and GCV (group with vitamin). Supplementation with a single dose of 4,500 IU of DL-a-tocopherol administered intramuscularly (IM) was preceded by clinical examination, complete blood count (CBC), determination of serum proteins, globulins, gamaglutamyltransferase and tracheobronchial lavage cytology (D0) to check sanity and homogenization of the groups. The animals were kept two by two in individual 2.40 m2 stalls, where they remained until day 21 (D0 to D21). The animals were examined daily and, in the presence of clinical signs of bronchopneumonia (DX), taken from stalls, evaluated by CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology, and treated with enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg, IM). During the treatment, clinical examination was performed daily by the CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology repeated one week after the end of treatment (DY). In healthy animals, CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology were repeated on the last day of the experiment (D21). No significant difference for the blood variables gamaglutamiltrasfrase (p=0.09), serum protein (p=0.27) and globulin (p=0.10) and the age of animals (p=0.15) were observed in both of groups. Animals in group GSV and GCV took an average of 11 and 12 days for get sick, respectively. However, no statistical difference between was observed in both groups (p=0.68). In 34 (56.66%) animals were diagnosed bronchopneumonia, and 17 of these calves (50%) belonged to group GCV and 17 (50%) to group GSV. With respect to clinical signs, there was no significant difference between groups in any of the times studied. Out of 34 animals which were affected, 73.52% died of the disease, 64.7% were from GCV group and 82.35% were from GSV group. Cytology of tracheobronchial lavage showed no difference between groups in any of the times studied (D0, DX, DY and D21). We conclude that supplementation with vitamin E had no influence in the prophylaxis and Treatment of bronchopneumonia in calves.

E-mail: phcunhavet@yahoo.com.br The aims of this study were to evaluate the clinical signs, the ruminal hydrogen sulfide concentration and the histological lesions induced by sulfur toxicosis in cattle. Ten crossbred calves were fed an experimental diet, four without sodium sulfate (G1) and six with (G2). The calves were submitted to clinical (rectal temperature, cardiac and respiratory rate and ruminal motricity) and laboratorial (hemogram, fibrinogen, total plasma protein, ruminal fluid pH, ruminal hydrogen sulfide concentration, cerebrospinal fluid and histopathological) evaluations. Rectal temperature, cardiac rate, hemogram, fibrinogen, total plasma protein, ruminal fluid pH and cerebrospinal fluid values were within normal reference ranges in animals from both groups. Ruminal hypomotricity and increased respiratory rate and ruminal hydrogen sulfide concentration occurred in G2 animals. One out of six calves in G2 developed neurological signs and lesions of PEM. Two calves of each Group were euthanized. Microscopic lesions of PEM were observed in G2 animals. Histologically there were cortical neuronal necrosis and hemorrhagic lesions in basal nuclei, thalamus, midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. The experimental model consisting of a diet with high carbohydrate and low in long fiber content with high sulfur concentrations (0.52%) resulted in clinical and histological abnormalities and high ruminal hydrogen sulfide concentration consistent with sulpur toxicosis in cattle.

E-mail: andre.meneses@ufra.edu.br To develop a model of hemodialysis (HD), 18 healthy dogs, without a defined breed, males, weighing 7-14 kg, were studied. A double lumen catheter was inserted into the jugular vein for vascular access. HD sessions, totalizing 5 for each dog, were performed with a proportional HD machine, controlled isovolemic ultrafiltration, standard dialysis solution and bicarbonate buffer. Sodium profile and sodium heparin were used. During HD sessions the dogs were kept anesthetized (levomepromazine and propofol). Hematological and biochemistry data, blood gas analysis, systemic arterial blood pressure, and activated clotting time were evaluated. Serum biochemistry e blood gas analysis showed, respectively, sodium and SO2 maintenance. Systemic blood pressure kept sustained during HD sessions. It could be concluded that it was possible to develop a HD dog model that is a safe and viable technique to be used in chronic renal failure patients.

Ruminal acidosis is due to excessive ingestion of carbohydrates of rapid fermentation without previous adaptation of the microorganisms, causing severe metabolic disturbances to the animals. The objective of the present study was to assess the neutrophilic oxidative metabolism in sheep treated with sodium monensin in experimentally induced ruminal lactic acidosis. A total of 18 mate sheep, half-bred (Ideal x Merino), fistulated in the rumen, were used; nine of them received 33 mg/kg of the ionophore diet per day, for 30 days; the others were controls. The acidosis was induced by supplying 15g of sucrose/kg of body weight. The clinical evaluation and the rumen and blood samples were obtained before (Oh) and at 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours post-induction. In both groups, all the animals presented clinical manifestations of ruminal lactic acidosis 6 hours after the induction. From this period on, a significant pH decrease (P<0.05) was observed in the ruminal fluid, which reached levels below 5. There were relevant differences (P<0.05) between the groups 12 hours after the induction, when the sheep treated with monensin had higher values than those of the control group. During this period, the oxidative metabolism of the neutrophils remained inhibited, and the reestablishment of this function only occurred in the sheep which received monensin. Blood pH, plasmatic glucose and the ionizable calcium suffered alterations within its levels. The seric cortisol concentration rose significantly (P<0.05) in both groups, although differences (P<0.05) between them were found at the end of the observation period. The treatment with monensin did not influence the oxidative metabolism of the neutrophils inhibited by the lactic acidosis; however, a faster recovery of this metabolism was verified in the animals treated with the ionophore.
