Roraima 1000, Camobi, Santa Maria, RS 97105-900, Brazil.

ABSTRACT.- Santini G., Mazzanti A., Beckmann D.V., Santos R.P., Pelizzari C., Polidoro D & Baumhardt R. 2010. [Cervical intervertebral disk disease in dogs: 28 cases (2003-2008).] Doença do disco intervertebral cervical em cães: 28 casos (2003-2008). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(8):659-664. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Medicina Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS Brazil. E-mail: alexamazza@yahoo.com.br The aim of this study was to evaluate the medical records of dogs with cervical intervertebral disk disease (IDD), submitted to surgical treatment at the Hospital Veterinário Universitário of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (HVU-UFSM), between January 2003 and October 2008. The animal data included breed, sex, age, neurological signs and their durations, response to surgical treatment, complications, time for functional recovery after surgery, and recurrence. All dogs showed cervical hyperaesthesia confirmed by the neck movement test. Regarding the degree of neurological dysfunction, the following were verified: degree I (eight dogs, 28.5%), degree II (three dogs, 10.7%), degree III (five dogs, 17.8%), and degree V (twelve dogs, 42.8%). In relation to the duration of neurological signs prior to surgery, seven dogs (25%) showed neurological deficits for up to 15 days, fourteen dogs (50%) for 15 to 30 days and the other seven dogs (25%) showed signs of neurological deficiencies for more than 30 days. All dogs (n=21) showed satisfactory recovery and no recurrence. It can be concluded that most affected dogs are middle aged, males and condrodystrophic and noncondrodystrophic breeds including large-breed dogs and the main neurological sign is cervical hyperaesthesia. The surgical treatment promotes satisfactory functional recovery and no recurrence, the main complications intraoperative are venous plexus hemorrhage, bradycardia and hypotension and the duration of clinical signs prior to surgery do not interfere with the recovery time of the dogs.

RESUMO.- Santini G., Mazzanti A., Beckmann D.V., Santos R.P., Pelizzari C., Polidoro D & Baumhardt R. 2010. [Cervical intervertebral disk disease in dogs: 28 cases (2003-2008).]

#23 - Epaxial musculature and epidural fibrosis in the spinal compression in dogs submitted modified dorsal laminectomy, 30(2):127-131

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Beckmann D.V., Mazzanti A., Cunha M.G.M.C.M., Souza G.S., Festugatto R., Santos R.P., Polidoro Neto D. & Baumhardt R. 2010. [Epaxial musculature and epidural fibrosis in the spinal compression in dogs submitted modified dorsal laminectomy.] E-mail: dvbeckmann@hotmail.com The purpose of this study was to isolate the adjacent epaxial musculature from exposed spinal cord by modified dorsal laminectomy in dogs with aluminum implant and to verify whether the muscles contribute to form epidural fibrosis, spinal cord compression, and development of neurological signs. Ten dogs were submitted to modified dorsal laminectomy between T13 and L1 and then distributed along two groups. Dogs in the group 1 remained with the spinal cord exposed without the implant; dogs in the group 2 had an aluminum implant inserted between the epaxial muscles and the exposed spinal cord. Neurological examination was daily performed until 180 days post surgery. Additionally, myelography at 15, 30, and 60 days post surgery and macroscopic evaluation of the implant at six months post surgery were done. There was no difference between groups in the neurological examination. A statistical difference in the degree of spinal compression was observed at day 15 post surgery in the group 2. In this group, the epaxial musculature adjacent to the spinal cord was not in contact with the epidural fibrosis, differently to what was observed in the control group. The implant was removed easily with some degree of deformity. The results showed that the adjacent musculature of the spinal cord submitted to a modified dorsal laminectomy in dogs can be isolated by aluminum implant, without any contact with epidural fibrosis or influence in the development of neurological signs.

RESUMO.- Beckmann D.V., Mazzanti A., Cunha M.G.M.C.M., Souza G.S., Festugatto R., Santos R.P., Polidoro Neto D. & Baumhardt R. 2010. [Epaxial musculature and epidural fibrosis in the spinal compression in dogs submitted modified dorsal laminectomy.]

E-mail: alexamazza@yahoo.com.br A retrospective study on atlantoaxial subluxation in dogs was done by reviewing the cases filed from 2003 to 2008 in the neurological records of the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, at Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The following data were identified: Breed, sex, age, etiology, clinical signs, duration of clinical course, assessment of the therapy employed and its efficacy, response to treatment and relapse. Fourteen dogs were diagnosed as affected by atlantoaxial subluxation and the condition was more frequent in dogs under twenty-four month old years and of toy breeds, such as Poodle (35.7%), Pinscher (21.4%) and Yorkshire terrier (21.4%). The main cause found for the instability was agenesis of the odontoid process. Clinical signs ranged from cranial cervical pain to non-ambulatory tetraparesis. The predominant treatment employed was surgical which demonstrated to be efficacious in 90% of the cases with minor risks of relapse when compared with clinical treatment. The predominant time of recovery was 30-60 days after surgery. No correlation was found between the duration of clinical signs before surgery and the time of recovery.

ABSTRACT.- Silva M.C., Fighera R.A., Mazzanti A., Brum J.S., Pierezan F. & Barros C.S.L. 2009 [Neuropathology of canine distemper: 70 cases (2005-2008).] Neuropatologia da cinomose canina: 70 casos (2005-2008). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(8):643-652. Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. E-mail: mctogni@yahoo.com.br The current study was performed to determine the pathology and distribution of lesions in the central nervous system (CNS) of 70 dogs naturally affected by canine distemper. Cases were grouped according to the age of the dogs and classified according to the evolution of the lesions. It was possibly to conclude that: (1) the encephalomyelitis induced by canine distemper virus is more prevalent in puppies and adults; (2) gross lesions in the CNS occur infrequently; (3) the brain is more frequently affected than the spinal cord; (4) the five anatomical sites of the rain more frequently affected are, in decreasing order of frequency, cerebellum, diencephalon, frontal lobe of telencephalon, pons and mesencephalon; (5) the anatomical site more frequently affected in the spinal cord is the cervical (C1-C5) segment; (6) subacute and chronic lesions are more common than acute ones; (7) demyelization is the more prevalent lesion and occur mainly in the cerebellum, pons and diencephalons, usually associated with astrogliosis and non-suppurative inflammation; (8) in most cases with astrogliosis, gemistocytic astrocytes are observed, frequently with syncitia formation; (9) non-suppurative leptomeningitis, malacia and cortical neuronal necrosis are moderately frequent in the brain and less so in the spinal cord; (10) inclusion bodies are frequent in the brain; occur mainly in astrocytes and less frequently in neurons, however independently of the affected cell they occur mainly in the nucleus; (11) a classification of canine distemper encephalitis based in age-related clinical syndromes it is not accurate.

Abstract in English:

Diel D.G., Fonseca E.T., Souza S.F., Mazzanti A., Bauermann F., Weiblen R. & Flores E.F. 2005. [Bovine herpesvirus 5 may use the olfactory and trigeminal pathways to invade the central nervous system of rabbits, depending upon the route of inoculation.] E-mail: flores@ccr.ufsm.br Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) is a major etiological agent of meningoencephalitis in cattle. Following replication in the nasal mucosa, viral invasion of the brain is thought to occur mainly by the olfactory pathway. To address the role of this pathway in the pathogenesis of neurological infection in a laboratory model, 30 days old rabbits had the main olfactory bulbs (MOBs) surgically removed and were subsequently inoculated intranasally (IN) or conjunctivally (IC) with a highly neurovirulent BoHV-5 strain (SV-507). Following IN inoculation, 10 out of 10 (100 %) control rabbits developed neurological disease. The clinical onset ranged from day 5 to 10 post-inoculation (pi, average 7.5 days); nine being euthanized in extremis and one recovering after a mild clinical course. In contrast, only one rabbit (9.1 %) of the group lacking the MOBs (n=11) developed neurological disease (onset at day 17 pi). Dexamethasone administration to the survivors (n=10) at day 50pi was followed by virus shedding in nasal and/or ocular secretions by 8 animals, demonstrating that the virus was able to reach the trigeminal ganglia (TG) during acute infection. These results demonstrate that the olfactory route provides the main, yet not the sole access to the brain of rabbits following IN inoculation. To address the role of a second pathway, groups of control (n=12) or MOB-lacking rabbits (n=12) were inoculated into the conjunctival sac (IC), following which the virus would be expected to use the ophtalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve to reach the brain. Ten control rabbits (83.3 %) developed neurological disease upon IC inoculation (onset 15.3 days [11 to 20]). Previous ablation of the MOBs did not affect the frequency and course of neurological disease: ten out of 12 rabbits (83.3 %) lacking the MOBs developed neurological disease (onset 9 to 15 dpi, average: 12.7 days) upon IC inoculation. These results demonstrate that both IN and IC routes may operate in the transport of BoHV-5 to the brain of experimentally infected rabbits, depending on the route of inoculation. IN inoculation results in a fast and efficient transport by the olfactory pathway, the trigeminal route providing an alternative, much slower and less efficient transport; IC inoculation results in efficient viral transport by the trigeminal route, yet with a delayed kinetics comparing to the transport provided by the olfactory pathway.
