#1 - Hemoplasma infection in wild captive carnivores

Abstract in English:

Hemoplasmas are bacteria able to adhere themselves loosely to the plasma membrane of erythrocytes and may parasitize several species of mammals. There are three known species of hemoplasmas that parasitize domestic and wild cats: Mycoplasma haemofelis, ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis’. Dogs are infected by at least two species of hemoplasmas: ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum’ and Mycoplasma haemocanis. The hemoplasmoses are very important in veterinary clinics, either because of its worldwide distribution and severity of clinical signs, depending on parasite species and host immune competence, or due to its zoonotic potential and capability of infecting endangered species. This study set out to investigate which hemoplasmas species parasitize different captive wild carnivores in order to clarify the epidemiology of hemoplasmoses in wild animals. Furthermore, the research intended to characterize the hematological changes caused by different species of hemotropic mycoplasmas infection in order to establish their clinical importance to wild species and the capacity of these species to become a reservoir of studied agents. Samples of 33 wild felids and 18 wild canids were investigated using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect hemoplasmas DNA and it was observed that the occurrence of infection in these species is 45.5% and 83.3%, respectively. Factors such as age, gender or anaemia are not more frequent in animals positive for the infection. Therefore, it is concluded that infection caused by hemoplasmas in wild carnivores has high prevalence, and either agent pathogenicity is low, or chronic stage is more frequent, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Moraes D.D.A., Gonçalves V.S.P., Mota A.L.A.A. & Borges J.R.J. 2017. [Epidemiological Status of Equine Infeccious Anemia in Working Equidae from the Federal District, Brazil.] E-mail: jrborges@unb.br Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA) is a disease that has worldwide distribution and it is caused by a lentivirus. The disease constrains the development of horse breeding in Brazil, leading to compulsory slaughter of test positive animals. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of EIA in traction equids and identify potential risk factors in the Federal District. Three hundred and fifty (350) owners were randomly selected (Primary Sampling Units-PSU) and all equids (Secondary Sampling Units – SSU) from each owner were sampled, in a total of 496 animals. Blood samples were tested in LANAGRO/MG using the agar-gel immunodiffusion test (AGID). An epidemiological questionnaire was used to collect data on potential risk factors associated with the disease. The prevalence of PSU (owners) was estimated at 2.29% (95% CI: 1.01-4.2%) and the prevalence in animals was 1.81% (95% CI: 0.55-3.07%). Prevalence was higher in mules than in horses. None of the other variables analyzed as potential risk factors was associated to the presence of the disease. The present study demonstrated that the prevalence of EIA in traction equids is low in the Federal District, which strengthens the case for the maintaining the test-and-cull policy and the need for disease surveillance measures aimed at eradicating the disease.

RESUMO.- Moraes D.D.A., Gonçalves V.S.P., Mota A.L.A.A. & Borges J.R.J. 2017. [Epidemiological Status of Equine Infeccious Anemia in Working Equidae from the Federal District, Brazil.]

Relation between anaemia and bone marrow features and serum erythropoietin in dogs with chronic kidney disease. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 37(6):598-602. Departamento de Clínica Médica Veterinária, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, Av. Fernando Corrêa da Costa 2367, Boa Esperança, Cuiabá, MT 78060-900, Brazil. E-mail: marys_torres@hotmail.com Chronic anaemia is one of the most severe complications of chronic kidney disease, contributing to morbidity and mortality caused by the disease; therefore, bone marrow cytological evaluation is needed to monitor the progression of anaemia. This study aimed to correlate the anaemia in dogs at different stages of chronic kidney disease with their serum biochemistry, myelogram results and serum erythropoietin findings. Sixty-three dogs were grouped according to International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) classification in stages 1, 2, 3 and 4. Haematologic, serum and urinary biochemistry and serum erythropoietin were performed for comparison with the findings of bone marrow cytology obtained by aspiration of the manubrium. Cytological findings for erythroid hypoplasia were described in 93.65% of dogs, and the anaemia was observed in 84.1% of them. The haematological findings were correlated with azotaemia (p<0.05). It was concluded that the erythroid hypoplasia has correlation with persistent anaemia in dogs at all stages of chronic kidney disease, with iron deficiency in dogs in the early stages and with peripheral destruction of erythrocytes caused by azotaemia.

Relation between anaemia and bone marrow features and serum erythropoietin in dogs with chronic kidney disease.

#4 - Equine infectious anaemia in equids of Southern Pantanal, Brazil: seroprevalence and evaluation of the adoption of a control programme, 37(3):227-233

Abstract in English:

Equine infectious anaemia in equids of Southern Pantanal, Brazil: seroprevalence and evaluation of the adoption of a control programme. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 37(3):227-233. Embrapa Pantanal, Rua 21 de Setembro 1880, Bairro Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Cx. Postal 109, Corumbá, MS 79320-900, Brazil. E-mail: marcia.furlan@embrapa.br The working equid population in Corumbá, Southern Pantanal, is very large and has a crucial role in the main economic activity of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, the beef cattle industry. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) in working equids of ranches in the municipality of Corumbá, by the official agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test, and evaluate the adoption of the Programme for the Prevention and Control of Equine Infectious Anaemia proposed by Embrapa Pantanal and official entities in the 1990s. From September to November 2009, forty ranches distributed through the area of the municipality were visited, and serum samples were obtained from 721 equines and 232 mules. According to previous publications and the present data, it was concluded that the prevalence of EIA in this population has increased from 18.17% to 38.60%, which represents at this time approximately 13,000 infected animals. There was no significant difference between the apparent prevalence of equines and mules. It was also verified that the control programme was not known by the greater part of the interviewed ranch owners, managers and foremen and, in their perception, EIA is not a primary threat to address. Among the studied variables, the serologic testing practice significantly reduced the risk for the presence of EIA seropositivity, as well as the separation of riding equipment and segregation of seropositives.

#5 - Prevalence of antibodies against chicken anaemia virus (CAV) in broiler breeders in Southern Brazil

Abstract in English:

Canal C.W., Ferreira D.J., Macagnan M., Fallavena L.C.B., Moraes H.L.S. & Wald V.B. 2004. Prevalence of antibodies against chicken anaemia virus (CAV) in broiler breeders in Southern Brazil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 24(2):89-92. Centro de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa em Patologia Aviária (CDPA), Faculdade de Veterinária da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. E-mail: claudio.canal@ufrgs.br Chicks infected during the first two weeks of life with chicken anaemia virus (CAV) manifest clinical disease that can be avoided if the breeder hens transfer enough antibodies to their progeny. The objective of the present work was to establish the prevalence and titer of anti-CAV antibodies in some Brazilian broiler hen breeder flocks and verify in which phase of life the birds were infected. A total of 1,709 serum samples from 12 broiler hen flocks vaccinated against CAV and 64 unvaccinated flocks were analyzed for CAV antibodies with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All non-vaccinated breeder flocks were found to be infected with CAV, with 89% of the hens tested presenting antibodies, 52% of these with titers considered high enough to protect their progeny against CAV infection. Likewise, all vaccinated hens had antibody titer to CAV capable of conferring protection to their progeny. Thus, vaccination of hens seems capable of conferring protection to chicks against clinically apparent CAV-associated disease.
