#1261 - Intoxicação natural e experimental por Nerium oleander (Apocynaceae) em bovinos no Rio Grande do Sul, p.404-408

Abstract in English:

Abstract.- Pedroso P.M.O., Bandarra P.M., Bezerra Júnior P.S., Raymundo D.L., Borba M.R., Leal J.S. & Driemeier D. 2009. [Natural and experimental poisoning by Nerium oleander (Apocynaceae) in cattle in Rio Grande do Sul.] E-mail: davetpat@ufrgs.br This paper describes natural and experimental poisoning of cattle by Nerium oleander in Rio Grande do Sul. Two out of eight cattle died acutely after consumption of leaves of Nerium oleander, branches of which had been cut and placed into a paddock where the animals were kept. An affected cow did not show clinical signs, but a 4-month-old calf presented lateral recumbence, paddling, vocalization and death. Main gross findings in the cow naturally poisoned and in two experimentally intoxicated heifers were observed in the heart and included hemorrhages in the left atrium, clots and hemorrhages in the left ventricular endocardium, and pale areas in the interventricular septum and ventricular myocardium. Histologically, there was coagulation necrosis of individual cardiac fibers or small groups of fibers, characterized by enhanced cytoplasmic eosinophily and picnotic nuclei. These lesions were most severe in the papillary muscle. The diagnosis was based on presence of the trimmed N. oleander in the paddock where the animals stayed, evidence of consumption of the plant, consistent clinical and pathological findings, and experimental reproduction of the disease through oral administration of 0.5 and 1.0g/kg of its green leaves to two cattle.

ABSTRACT.- Coelho A.C., Pinto M.L., Coelho A.M. & Rodrigues J. 2009. [Comparison of two techniques of isolation of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in faecal samples of ovine with clinical suspicion of paratuberculosis.] E-mail: accoelho@utad.pt Paratuberculosis is a chronic enteric disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Culture of bacteria from faeces and tissues samples constitutes one of the most effective methods of confirming the diagnosis of para-tuberculosis and the only method available to obtain strains of mycobacteria. However, this method is less sensitive and requires months of incubation before colony growth occurs. In this study, culture method was used on sheep faeces to diagnose paratuber-culosis in animals with compatible signs of the disease. A comparison of two culture media used to isolation was also investigated. Culture was positive in 2.0% of faecal samples. Isolation was obtained using Löwenstein Jensen® with mycobactin® J, and the Middlebrook® 7H11 with OADC®. The Löwenstein Jensen® with mycobactin® J was that provided highest amount of isolations. The percentages of isolation in each culture media were 2.0% (6/300) to Löwenstein Jensen® with micobactina J, and 1.0% (3/300) to Middlebrook® 7H11/OADC. The three positive samples in Middlebrook® 7H11/OADC were also positive in Löwenstein Jensen® with micobactina J. In the Middlebrook® 7H11/OADC alone there was no sample growth. The results of this study suggest that culture media of Löwenstein-Jensen® with micobactina® J is more effective for the isolation of sheep strains in Portugal.

E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br A condition of buffaloes characterized by an increased volume of one of the cheeks was shown to be due to accumulation of the seeds of the palm-tree “mucaja” (Acrocomia aculeata) and of grass, in the oral vestibulum during rumination. This caused compressive atrophy with thinning and medial deviation of the corresponding submaxillary bone and exposition of the roots of molar teeth. The seeds appear to be of good palatability to the buffaloes.

E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br A condition with enlargement of the oral cleft in horses was studied. The enlargement of varied extension was uni or bilateral. The cheek mucosa of the labial commissure showed slight erosions. During chewing there was loss of small amounts of grass and saliva through the oral cleft. The affected horses were in good nutritional condition. Histopathological studies of tissues obtained by biopsia, revealed a superficial epidermitis. The pastures consisted of Panicum maximum grass (varieties Tanzânia, Mombaça, Tobiatã and Colonião) which was mature, tall, lignified, with leaves of cutting edges. Based on epidemiological, clinical and histopathological data, it was concluded that the lesions were caused by the hard grass, favored by the way horses pull the tall grass and chew it.

Escola de Medicina Veterinária, Campus Castanhal, Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), Castanhal, PA 68743-080, Brazil. E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br Squamous cell carcinoma in goats of two farmers in the State of Pará is described. Prevalence, correlation with the pigmentation of the perineal area and macro and microscopic characteristics of the lesions were studied. The tumors on the perineum were of varied development degrees, diameters and forms. On one farm, in the county of Viseu, from a total of 347 goats, 20 presented the neoplasia (5.8%). On the second farm, in the county of Garrafão do Norte, three cases of squamous cell carcinoma in a herd of 400 goats (0.75 %) were observed. The tumor was only observed in animals in which the perineal area was despigmented. The high incidence of this tumor appears to be due, to lack of pigmentation at the períneo and the high and short tail of the goats, that exposes the area to intense of ultraviolet radiation in the tropics.

E-mail: rinaldo.mota@hotmail.com The objective of this paper was to study the molecular performance and phenotypic characterization of Burkholderia mallei isolated from horses with clinical and serological diagnosis of glanders, originating from the Metropolitan District of Recife and Zona da Mata of Pernambuco and Alagoas. The isolation and biochemical identification of B. mallei was carried out by microbiological and molecular techniques of PCR-fingerprinting and RAPD-PCR. From the eight samples studied, four showed little phenotype variations. In the molecular tests, the samples formed 4 groups of different ribotype profiles and 4 genotype profiles. There was some association of PCR-fingerprinting with RAPD-PCR results. It was concluded that the slight biochemical variations were not associated with different molecular profiles. They also indicated that these differences show heterogeneity associated with the origin of the sample, indicating that the infection was caused by clones of different strains and that the polymorphism of DNA observed could make it

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(4):303-311. Laboratório de Neurogastroenterologia Experimental, Universidade Paranaense, Praça Mascarenhas de Moraes 4286, Umuarama, PR 87502-210, Brazil. E-mail: eduardoaraujo@unipar.br The behavior of the gill epithelium of tilapias cultured in tanks at different altitudes and interconnected with PVC pipes was analyzed. Gill filaments of four specimens from four tanks (T1, T2, T3 e T4) sequentially interconnected were submitted to histological routine to obtain 5-mm-thick cuts that were stained with HE or submitted to histochemistry reactions PAS + diastase solution or Alcian Blue pH 2.5 or Alcian Blue pH 1.0. Considering the intermediary, apical and basal regions of the filaments, the lamellar area was measured and the amount of mucous cells was counted. It was verified that oxygen, pH, and temperature decreased progressively as the water flew from one tank to another. Thus, an increase was realized of the amount of mucous cells and the lamellar area in T2, as well as a progressive decrease of these measures on the tanks which received water from T2. Moreover, detachment of the gill epithelium, cellular hyperplasia in the interlamellar space, and telangectasias were observed in the fishes from T2, T3 e T4. It was concluded that the aquatic environment in tanks sequentially interconnected with PVC pipes suffers alterations from one tank to another, as that physico-chemical fluctuations reflect on the behavior of the gill epithelium through variations of the lamellar area and the amount of mucous cells.

#1270 - Effects of ascorbic acid supplementation in ileum myenteric neurons of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, p.295-302

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Silverio S.M., Mari R.B, Clebis N.K., Scoz J.R., Germano R.M., Major J.A.A., Bombonato P.P. & Stabille S.R. 2009. The effects of ascorbic acid supplementation in ileum myenteric neurons of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(4):295-302. Departamento de Cirurgia, Setor de Anatomia dos Animais Domésticos e Silvestres, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: remari@usp.br The exacerbation of the oxidative stress and of the polyol pathway which impair damage myenteric plexus are metabolic characteristics of diabetes. The ascorbic acid (AA) is an antioxidant and an aldose reductase inhibitor, which may act as neuroprotector. The effects of AA supplementation on the density and cellular body profile area (CP) of myenteric neurons in STZ-induced diabetes in rats were assessed. Four groups with five animals each were formed: normoglycemic (C); diabetic (D); AA-treated diabetic (DS) and AA-treated normoglycemic (CS). Dosagen of 50mg of AA were given, three times a week, for each animal (group DS and CS). Ninety days later and after euthanasia, the ileum was collected and processed for the NADPH-diaphorase technique. There were no differences (P>0.05) in the neuronal density among the groups. The CP area was lower (P<0.05) in the DS and CS groups, with a higher incidence of neurons with a CP area exceeding 200mm2 for groups C and D. The AA had no influence on the neuronal density in the ileum but had a neuroprotective effect, preventing the increase in the CP area and allowing a higher number of neurons with a CP area with less than 200mm2.
