ABSTRACT.- Marques A.V.S., Soares P.C, Riet-Correa F., Mota I.O., Silva T.L.A., Borba Neto A.V., Soares F.A.P. & Alencar S.P. 2011. [Serum and liver concentrations of copper, iron, zinc and molybdenum in sheep and goats in the state of Pernambuco.] E-mail: psoares@dmv.ufrpe.br The aim of this research was to determine serum and liver concentrations of Cu, Mo, Fe and Zn in sheep and goats slaughtered in the semiarid region of the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, during the rainy and dry seasons, and to establish if Cu deficiency which occurs in the region is primary or secondary to high levels of Mo and/or Fe. Serum and liver samples from 141 goats and 141 sheep were submitted to wet digestion in nitric-perchloric acid and analyzed by coupled plasma atomic absorption spectrophotometry (ICPOES). The mean serum concentrations of Cu were 9.85±2.71µmol/L in sheep and 11.37±2.57µmol/L in goats. Mean Cu liver concentrations were 158.45±83.05mg/kg in sheep and 152.46±79.58mg/kg in goats. Mean serum concentrations of Fe were 35.58±14.89µmol/L in sheep and 25.06±8.10µmol/L in goats. Mean liver concentrations of Fe were 156.10±55.99mg/kg in sheep and 210.53±121.99mg/kg in goats. Mean serum concentrations of Mo were 0.28±0.11µmol/L in goats and 0.31±0.16µmol/L in sheep. Mean liver concentrations of Mo were 6.53±4.13mg/kg in goats and 8.10±4.01mg/kg in sheep. Mean serum concentrations of Zn were 11.9±6.07µmol/L in sheep and 11.79±7.42µmol/L in goats. Mean liver concentrations of Zn were 126.43±51.50mg/kg in sheep and 132.91±55.28mg/kg in goats. Based on Cu serum and liver concentrations and on the sporadic occurrence of enzootic ataxia, Cu supplementation is recommended for grazing sheep and goats during the dry and the rainy seasons. Considering that serum and hepatic concentrations of Fe and Mo are within normal ranges or are marginal, it is suggested that the low Cu concentrations are not related with high Fe or Mo ingestion. Non significant differences were observed between serum and liver con-centrations of Cu and Mo, and between serum concentrations of Fe in samples collected during the rainy season and the dry season. Liver concentrations of Fe and serum and liver concentrations of Zn were significantly higher during the rainy season. Taking into account that serum and liver Zn concentrations in sheep and goats are considered marginal, supple-mentation with Zn is suggested for grazing sheep and goats, mainly during the dry season.

Roraima 1000, Camobi, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. E-mail: glaukommers@yahoo.com Mammary gland tumors are common in dogs and are the most common type of neoplasm of female dogs. The main purposes of this study were to establish the prevalence of the mammary gland tumors, as well as of its different histologic types (neoplastic and non-neoplastic), diagnosed in the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. There were 1,304 biopsy reports of mammary gland tumors during 1990-2008 and 132 necropsy reports of dogs with mammary tumors in 2000-2008. Data about breed, gender, and age of dogs, tumor localization, morphologic diagnosis, and metastasis occurrence were analyzed. In the biopsy cases, 1,495 tumors were diagnosed, considering the presence of more than one type of tumor in some of the dogs. From those, 1,465 were neoplastic and 30 were non-neoplastic. Within the neoplasms, 390 (26.6%) were benign and 1,075 (73.3%) were malignant. The benign/malignant ratio was 1:2.75. During the years 2000-2008, 1,125 necropsies of dogs were performed, 132 (11.64%) of which with mammary gland tumors. There were 152 morphologic diagnoses, being 150 of neoplastic and two of non-neoplastic lesions. Simple carcinoma was the most prevalent histologic type, both among biopsy and necropsy cases. On necropsy cases, metastases to lymph nodes and distant organs were seen in 39 (29.5%) and 64 (53,3%) cases, respectively.

#43 - Effects of laparoscopy on the cardiorespiratory system of brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) anesthetized with ketamine/ xylazine/ midazolam combination and isoflurane, p.555-560

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Munerato M.S., Zanetti E.S., Marques J.A. & Duarte J.M.B. 2008. Effects of laparoscopy on the cardiorespiratory system of brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) anesthetized with ketamine/ xylazine/ midazolam combination and isoflurane. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 28(11):555-560. Departamento de Clínica e Cirurgia Veterinária, Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Via de Acesso Professor Paulo Donato Castellane s/n, Jaboticabal, SP 14884-900, Brazil. E-mail: marinamunerato@gmail.com Laparoscopy is not widely used as a tool to perform assisted reproduction techniques in South American cervids; thus, scarce information in literature is available regarding its effects and appropriate anesthetic protocols to perform it. This study evaluated the effect of laparoscopy on heart rate (HR), respiration rate (RR), saturation of oxyhemoglobin (SpO2) and rectal temperature (RT) of six female brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) anesthetized with ketamine (5mg/kg), xylazine (0.3mg/kg), midazolam (0.5mg/kg) combination i.v. and isoflurane. Twelve laparoscopies were performed and each animal was used twice with a 40-day interval. After anesthetized, the animals were placed in dorsal recumbency to perform laparoscopy procedure using abdominal CO2 insufflations (14.2 ± 2.39mmHg; M ± SE). The main events of the laparoscopy procedure were divided into three periods: animal without (P1) and with abdominal insufflation (P2) and abdominal insufflation with the hips raised at 45° (P3). As a control, the animals were anesthetized again 40 days after the last laparoscopy, and were maintained in a dorsal recumbency for the same average duration of the previous anesthesia and no laparoscopy procedure was conducted. The period of anesthesia for the controls was also divided into P1, P2, and P3 considering the average duration of these periods in previous laparoscopies performed. Data were analyzed through the (ANOVA) variance analysis followed by Tukey test and values at P<0.05 were considered significant. No significant differences were observed in the parameters evaluated at P1, P2 and P3 between the animals submitted to laparoscopy and control. However, the RR mean between P1 (38.8 ± 4.42) and P3 (32.7 ± 4.81); and the RT mean between the P1 (38.2°C ± 0.17), P2 (37.6°C ± 0.19) and P3 (37.0°C ± 0.21) varied significantly, independent of the laparoscopy. These data indicated that laparoscopy didn’t cause any significant alterations in the cardiorespiratory parameters evaluated, even though the anesthetic protocol used can cause a reduction in the RT contributing to development of hypothermia during anesthesia.

Postal 2153, Campo Grande, MS 79003-010, Brazil. E-mail: claudio.madruga@pq.cnpq.br Trypanosoma vivax outbreaks in beef cattle in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil, causes relevant economical impact due to weight loss, abortion and mortality. Cattle moved from the Pantanal to adjacent areas of this ecosystem for breeding and fattening is a common feature. Therefore an epidemiological study on breeding cows in the transition area between Pantanal lowland and adjacent highlands of Mato Grosso do Sul was performed to determine the T. vivax infection dynamics and outbreak risk. Three experimental groups were formed: Group 1 consisted of cows parasitologically negative by the Woo test and in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for T. vivax antibody detection (Tv-ELISA-Ab); Group 2 parasitologically negative and positive in the Tv-ELISA-Ab; and in Group 3 cows were parasitologically positive and with positive reactions in the Tv-ELISA-Ab. During 24 months, the cows’ dislodgment between the above established groups was monitored by Woo test and Tv-ELISA-Ab exams. The tabanid population was also monitored and the highest number occurred during the rainy season. Although parasitemias were detected only in the first four samplings of the experimental period, the cows could be considered as trypanotolerant, because no clinical signs were observed. Despite the higher T. vivax incidence during the dry season, no disease symptoms were seen. Even though T. vivax epidemiological situation in the herd was characterized as endemic with seasonal variation, the probability of outbreaks was null within the conditions of the study.

ABSTRACT.- Cazerta S.M.M., Miglino M.A., Marques R.S., Vulcano M. & Pereira F.T.V. 2007. [Characterization of hemophagous areas of the bovine placenta.] Caracterização das áreas hemófagas da placenta bovina. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 26(6):229-235. Faculdade de Zootecnia, Campus Dracena, Unesp, Rod. Com. João Ribeiro de Barros, SP294 Km 651, Dracena, SP 17900-000, Brazil. E-mail: fverechia@dracena.unesp.br The specific region of maternal fetal interface needs to be clarified and corresponds to the “arcade zone” of sheep and goat placentomes. In small ruminants that area is also characterized by macroscopic blood extravasation (hemophagous areas). This occurs possibly because the iron is transferred to the embryo by trophoblastic erytrophagocytosis in these hemophagous placental areas. In order to investigate the hemophagous placental areas in cattle, placentomes of 34 pregnant Bos indicus cows (2-3, 4-6, 7-8 and 9 months of gestation) were analyzed. They were fixed by perfusion with 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution and 4% paraformoldehyde in PBS, pH 7.4, 0.1M, processed and stained for light microscopy and histochemistry. The methodology used allowed to observe placental haematomes between the uterine and trophoblastic epithelium since 3 months of pregnancy. Erythrocytes had been found in the trophoblastic cells, elucidating the erytrophagocytosis. Through Perl’s histochemical reaction it was possible to prove the existence of ferric iron in the trophoblastic cells. The PAS reaction was positive staining mucoid substance in the epithelial cells, especially in the binucleate cells of the fetal epithelium. Based on histology and histochemistry, it can be inferred that the hemophagous areas are important sites for iron transfer in the bovine placenta.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Souza A.M., Marques D.F., Döbereiner J. & Dutra I.S. 2006. [Spores and toxins of Clostridium botulinum in raining ponds used as water supply for cattle in pastures in the Araguaia Valley, state of Goiás, Brazil.] E-mail: airesms@vet.ufg.br The occurrence and distribution of Clostridium botulinum spores and toxins type C and D in 300 ponds, used by cattle for drinking on 130 farms located in 12 municipalities of the Rio Araguaia valley, state of Goiás, Brazil, was evaluated. The presence of spores was determined indirectly by cultivation in culture medium, followed by inoculation and neutralization in mice of samples of the sediment from the bottom of the raining ponds, from superficial soil and from cattle feces collected to its circuit. The toxin presence was evaluated directly by inoculation in mice of the filtered sediment of the ponds, followed by the neutralization in mice with antitoxins C and D. The presence of C. botulinum spores was significantly more frequent (p<0,05) in the cattle feces (31%), when compared with the results of the superficial soil samples (19%) and the sediments (10%). Botulinum toxins of type C and D or classified as belonging to the CD compound were detected in 6 samples (2%) of the 300 ponds. Of the 130 worked farms, in 122 (93,85%) ponds Clostridium botulinum spores or toxins were found in at least one of the researched variables, whilst ponds on only 8 (6,15%) farms did not present any contamination. Age and depth of the ponds were associated with the frequency of detection of botulinum spores and toxins. The older and shallower the ponds were, the larger was the frequency of isolation of the spores and toxins. The contamination of the ponds in the Araguaia valley with Clostridium botulinum spores and toxins type C and D demonstrates the permanent and growing potential risk for the occurrence of botulism in cattle through drinking water.

Two ewes and six lambs were divided into seven treatments and fed the plant. The adult ewes did not show clinical signs of poisoning. The 4 to 5-month-old lambs presented partial wool loss 6 days after beginning of the administration of the plant and total wool loss after 12 or 20 days. The age of the sheep in this experiment suggests resistance of adult ewes and susceptibility of young lambs to L. leucocaephala poisoning.

E-mail: jhmviana@cnpgl.embrapa.br The aim of this studywas to evaluate lesions of the genital tract in animais used as oocyte donors. Gir breed cows (n=20) used in different experiments involving the ovum pick-up technique were evaluated. At the end of each experimental period the animais were examined by rectal palpation, ultrasonography and vaginoscopy. A group of cows (n=8) were selected for histopathologic characterization of ovarian lesions. Ovaries were surgically removed, fixed and processed for histological examination. The cows evaluated underwent 9 to 42 puncture sessions, and yielded 10 to 719 oocytes. There was a low prevalence (5.26%) of inflammatory changes in the vagina mucosa. The occurrence of adherence was significantly correlated with the number of puncture sessions the animal underwent (r=0.31; P<0.05), but not with the total of oocytes collected (r=0.03; P>0.05). The opposite was observed reganding ovarian fibrosis, which showed a high correlation with oocyte yield (r=0.53; P<0.05). Histopathologic evaluation revealed scar tissue, inflammatory cell infiltration and presence of luteal tissue dispersed within the ovarian stroma.

E-mail: rmtmed@cstr.ufpb.br Three outbreaks ofnitrate poisoning are reported from the semiarid region ofthe state of Paràíba, northeastem Brazil. One outbreak caused by Echinochloa polystachya (capim-mandante) and two others caused by Pennisetum purpureum (capim-elefante) occurred at the end ofthe dry season, after the first raios. ln one ofthe outbreaks caused by Pennisetum purpureum part of the pasture had been fertilized with cattle manure. Five out of 11 cattle died on one farm, 27 out of81 on another, and 3 out of9 on a third one. Clinicai sigos were anorexia, respiratory distress, teeth grinding, depression or hyperexitability, tremors, abdominal contractions, salívation, nasal discharge, uncoordinated gait, cyanosis, and finally recumbency. Nitrates and nitrites in the blood of affected cattle and pastures were determined by the diphenylamine test. It is suggested that the main reason for nitrate accumulation in the grasses was the prolonged draught followed by rain. ln one ofthe outbreaks caused by Pennisetum purpureum, another reason was probably the fertilization of the soil with cattle manure.

#50 - Sudden deaths in cattle associated with copper deficiency, 23(1):21-32

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Marques A.P., Riet-Correa F., Soares M.P., Ortolani E.L. & Giuliodori M.J. 2003. (Sudden deaths in cattle associated with copper deficiency.] An outbreak of sudden death was observed in cattle in southern Brazil. No significant gross or microscopic lesions were found in 1 O cattle at post-mortem examination. To test if the sudden deaths were caused by a toxic plant, 13 weeds were collected and given to rabbits at a total of 440 to 600 g per kg body weight within 7 days. Results were negative. Mean copper levels of the tiver in 10 cattle were very low (3.6± 1.6 ppm-dry matter) suggesting Cu deficiency as the cause of the disease. Five samples of pasture collected during the outbreak had normal levels of Cu (8.4±0.8 ppm-d.m.) and S (0.2%±0.03-d.m.), but high levels of Fe (522± 122 ppm-d.m.). One group of 10 heifers was supplemented with Cu subcutaneously. This group and a similar control group were maintained in the sarne area where the outbreak occurred. Serum levels of Cu, S, Fe, Mo and ceruloplasmin were determined bimonthly in both groups during one year. Mean serum levels of Cu (1.76± 1.06 to 10.34±3.1 μmol/1 for the control group and 3.86± 1.53 to 10.61 ± 1.34 μmol/1 for the treated group) and ceruloplasmin (6.59±3.93 to 18.61±4.14 mg/1 for the control group and 10.31±5.48 to 32.49±6.05 mg/1 for the treated group) were significantly higher in the supplemented group (P=0.0046 for Cu and P=0.0001 for ceruloplasmin), but they were below normal levels in most samples of both groups. Serum levels of Cu and ceruloplasmin were correlated (r=0.67; P=00.5). ln both groups serum levels of Fe (40.09±5.25 to 78.48±28.23 μmol/1) were higher than normal levels. Samples of forage were collected bimonthly for determination of Cu, Mo, S, Fe and protein in 7 points of the paddock where the outbreak occurred. Levels of Cu (1.36±0.56 to 4.76±1.15 ppm-d.m.) were below the normal ranges. The concentration of Mo (0.17±0.06 to 0.96±0.47 ppm-d.m.) was within normal ranges. Levels of S (0.21 ±0.04% to 0.5±0.17%) and Fe (172.92±62.64 to 437.24±205.44 ppm-d.m.) were occasionally within toxic level. Levels of protein varied from 7.77±2.6% to 13.16±3.02%. Six samples of water and six of submersed pastures were collected at the end of the experiment when the paddock was flooded. High levels of iron (169.23±83.49 ppm-d.m.) and S (0.06±0.03%) were found in the water. Levels of Fe and S in the submerse pasture were of 469.3±218.28 ppm and 0.19 ±0.05%, respectively. The results obtained suggest that the sudden deaths are due to Cu deficiency. Three factors seem to be responsible for the Cu deficiency: 1) high levels of iron in pastures and water; 2) occasionally low levels of copper in the pastures; and 3) the ingestion of S above the requirements due to the levels occasionally high in pastures and high in water. The outbreak reported is similar to other outbreaks of sudden deaths associated with low liver copper previously reported during winter in the sarne region of southern Brazil. This area is characterized by acid sandy soils with frequent flooding during this season. ln periodically flooded acid soils iron is solubilized and absorbed by the plants, decreasing the Cu content and increasing the Fe content of forage. This seems to be the main reason for Cu deficiency in the region.

RESUMO.- Marques A.P., Riet-Correa F., Soares M.P., Ortolani E.L. & Giuliodori M.J. 2003. [Sudden deaths in cattle associated with copper deficiency.]
