The epidemiology, clinical signs and pathology of 29 outbreaks of
spontaneous poisoning by Brachiaria spp. in beef cattle, which occurred from March 1996 to November 2009, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, were retrospectively studied. For this, the files of the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul were reviewed. Outbreaks occurred at different times of the year, including dry and rainy seasons. While photosensitization was the main clinical sign in cattle from 24 out of 29 outbreaks, in five of them the main clinical sign was progressive wasting, without photosensitization. Eleven outbreaks of photosensitization occurred in pastures of Brachiaria decumbens, two in mixed pastures of B. decumbens and B. brizantha, and one in B. brizantha. In 10 outbreaks the species of Brachiaria was not informed. Morbidity ranged from 0.2% to 50%, and fatality rates were between 44.4% and 100%. In cases of photosensitization brisket edema was the most frequent clinical sign observed. Dermatitis with thickened skin of the flank and perineal region, scar retraction of the ears, jaundice, ocular discharge, crusts in the eyes and ears, and ulceration of the ventral surface of the tongue were also observed. Nervous signs were observed in two cases and diarrhea in one. At necropsy the liver was enlarged, yellowish, with increased lobular pattern, and occasionally with depressed whitish areas. The kidneys were brownish and the urine dark. Upon histological examination of the liver the hepatocytes were swollen and vacuolized. Individual necrosis of hepatocytes, bile duct cell proliferation, biliary retention, and mild to moderate periportal fibrosis were also observed. In all cases foamy macrophages, most in groups, were observed mainly in the centrilobular region. In 21 cattle birefringent crystals were observed within the bile ducts. Five outbreaks of progressive wasting were observed in cattle grazing B. decumbens pastures. The main lesion was an enlarged yellowish liver. Histologic lesions were similar to those observed in cases of photosensitization. Birefringent crystals were observed in the liver of three cases, but foamy macrophages were found in all animals. It is concluded that B. decumbens is more toxic than B. brizantha and that the poisoning occurs at any time of the year. Nevertheless, research is still necessary to determine variations in the saponin content of Brachiaria species and the probable differences on susceptibility/resistance to the poisoning of cattle of different ages, breeds and from different regions.

The expansion of the alcohol industry has led to the installation of ethanol plants in areas traditionally occupied by beef cattle in the Brazilian Midwest. Stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) outbreaks associated with alcohol plants have been reported in Nelore cattle in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in the last two years. Visits to livestock ranches and alcohol plants were held in mid-November 2009 at the end of S. calcitrans outbreaks in the counties of Angélica and Ponta Porã, MS. Interviews, surveys and collections of immature stages of flies were conducted at the sites and the entomological material was taken to the laboratory for further emergency. High stable fly infestations and cattle bunching behavior were observed during visits. Stable fly breeding sites were found and emergence of adult flies occurred from material collected from both cattle ranches and alcohol plants. The set of information, on-site observation, and sampling results made possible a preliminary epidemiological approach on the dynamics of S. calcitrans outbreaks as well as a discussion of potential risk factors.

Pain in animals has been recognized for less than one century. Several authors confirm that animals are capable to process, register and modulate nociceptive stimuli in a very similar way to human kind and there are several evidences registering the impact of pain sensation over vital systems interfering on disease outcome. Nevertheless, despite some evidences that animals, as human beings, can store information from past painful experiences less is known about how this so called pain memory works. The aims of this study were: to evaluate if the response to a painful stimuli differs during different stages of life and if repetition of a same acute stimuli in the same animal interferes with expression of hyperalgesia. Thus, 60 rats were selected and arranged in 3 equal groups: 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months of age. All animals were injected 5% formalin solution in the plantar face of hind paw under volatile general anesthesia. Von Frey filaments were applied at 1h, 24h and 48h after sensitization. Injection was repeated twice with a 30-day interval, each time in a different hind paw. Results showed that younger rats express lower hyperalgesia thresholds in the first stimulation compared to elder animals and that repetition of same stimulus diminishes hyperalgesia thresholds when it begins during infant period and augments hyperalgesia thresholds when it begins during elder ages.

The hematological profile was determined in three populations of Ctenomys lami that inhabits three different areas nominated as A and B, affected by cattle production, and C, without human impact, all of them in southern Brazil, under the same geologic formation. Sixty two individuals were collected. The packed cell volume (PCV) values, hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell (RBC) count presents statistic significant differences between males and females. PCV and Hb values were lower in comparison with other subterranean rodents, which could be related to the food searching behavior or soil characteristic of the species. Significant statistic differences were found to for Hb, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and lymphocytes between animals belonging to A and C areas. The PCV values were higher for animals from areas A and B, with significance only between A and C. Some of these alterations may suggest a modification on stress levels of the animals inhabiting areas A and B with anthropic alterations, or maybe just an inherited characteristic. Significant statistic differences were found either in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) between A and C areas, and platelets between A and B areas. No Kurloff cells were observed in the blood smear from analyzed individuals. The hematological values founded for Ctenomys lami are an important information for this species, which can be used for future research and management.

Among the methods of control of gastrointestinal worms in sheep, the use of chemicals is the most common. However, the continued, and indiscriminate, use of these products has selected populations of resistant helminths to anthelmintics, a phenomenon reported in the whole world. This study aimed to identify the species of gastrointestinal parasites and diagnose the status of anthelmintic resistance in sheep in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul Brazil. Feacal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed in flocks of sixteen farms, and the seven formulations used contained the following pharmacological bases: Albendazole, Ivermectin, Levamizol, Trichlorfon, Moxidectin, Closantel and one containing the first three in association. The species identified at necropsy, in adult sheep, were: Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Cooperia curticei, C. punctata, C. pectinata and Oesophagostomum columbianum, in order of prevalence. The formulations containing Albendazole and Ivermectin did not show efficacy in reducing the EPG in the flocks tested, with average reductions of 0.7 and -19.6%, respectively. Closantel presented an average efficacy of 6.7%; Levamisolee, Moxidectin and Trichlorfon, 28.7, 26.8 and 65% respectively, the combination of three bases (Albendazole, Ivermectin and Levamizol), an average efficacy of 55.8 %. The average percentages of infective larvae recovered in the faecal cultures, pre and post treatment were similar, indicating that resistance to the bases tested is present in all species cited, to a greater or lesser degree. The two genera predominantly resistant are Haemonchus sp., with 86.9%, followed by Trichostrongylus sp., with an average of 47.5%, Strongyloides sp. 33.6%, Oesophagostomum sp. 21.4% and Cooperia sp. 19.7%.

The prevalence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies was estimated for female cattle aged 24 months or older. The sample comprised 178 herds from 22 counties in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The risk factors associated with the presence of infeccion were investigated. A total of 2,573 blood serum samples were tested against 10 leptospira serovars using the microagglutination test (MAT). Titers of 100 or higher for one or more serovars were detected in 1,801 females (98.8%) from 161 herds (96.5%). Serovar Hardjo (65.6%) was the most frequent, followed by serovar Wolffi (12.3%). These results suggest that bovine leptospirosis is widespread in all the counties under study, with a high prevalence both at the animal and the herd level. Beef farms and the Zebu breed were associated to the higher risk of herd infection by leptospiras.

Due to the increasing use of cortical bone allografts in orthopedic surgeries, de knowledge of its biomechanics characteristics during preservation time is needed. The present study consisted in the analyses of the resistance power to the micro-traction of samples of rabbit cortical bones preserved in several means for up to 180 days and fresh. The results showed that the resistance and the preservation time presented an inversely proportional relation, meaning that, the longer the time of preservation, the shorter the physical resistance evaluated in the biomechanical rehearsal of resistance to the micro-traction. The glycerin has presented lower values in relation to the resistance test, showing, after 30 days, only 24.58% of the present power in the fresh bone, and by 180 days, 1.76%. The samples submitted to autoclavation also showed low values by the end of the experiment, while they remained with just 12.31% of the power present in the fresh bone. The bones preserved in homologous plasma, Dakin liquid and the ones cryopreserved showed the best levels of resistance at the end of the experiment, remaining, respectively with 82.47, 70.34 and 66.72% of the maximum power, while compared with the resistance of the fresh bones. The conclusion is that the choice of methodology and time of preservation interfered directly in the biomechanics of the cortical bones, promoting decrease of the resistance capacity to the traction along the period of preservation.

The development of biologic modalities designed to enhance bone regeneration and wound healing of specific periodontal sites continues to be a challenge and has been accomplished through the cell binding activity of Type-I collagen. These have been provided by a synthetic cell biding peptide (P-15), associated to a anorganic bone matrix (ABM) to form ABM/P-15. The aim of this study was to evaluate the attachment loss and periodontal pocket response in teeth after 3 and 6 months with ABM/P-15 graft application. Twenty one dogs from the Veterinary Hospital, University of São Paulo, were anesthetized in order to accomplish periodontal treatment and 132 teeth faces with attachment loss were treated. From these, 36.4% (48 faces) received cell binding peptide and 63.6% (84 faces) compounded the control group that received conventional treatment (muco-gingival flap and root planning). The procedure was documented by intra-oral radiography and all periodontal probings were photographed. After 3 and 6 months, the animals were re-anesthetized in order to accomplish new photography, radiography and periodontal probing exams. The 48 attachment loss faces that received graft material exhibited 40% of regeneration rate after 6 months. The control faces did not change their attachment level. The palatal face presented the better regeneration rates (40%) and the canines and molars teeth showed the better responses (57.14% and 65%, respectively). There was no post-surgical infection related to absence of oral home care. It can be concluded that ABM/P-15 helps a more rapidly periodontal structure re-attachment and regeneration, including alveolar bone. Its application was easy and practical, and the post-surgical complications incidence was low. Nevertheless, more work is necessary to evaluate the amount and the quality of formed bone and periodontal ligament.

Chagas disease is an anthropozoonosis caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and dogs are considered to be one of the main reservoirs of the disease in the South America. This study evaluates the occurrence of the infection caused by T. cruzi in dogs from a rural area of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Indirect immunofluorescence test (IFI) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used in 75 dogs living in this area. The antibodies were detected in 45.3% (n=34) and 24.0% (n=18) with IFI and ELISA, respectively. The actual prevalence of the infection was confirmed as 22.7% (n=17) by the criterion of positivity in both tests. The results confirm T. cruzi infection in dogs in the region.
