Abstract in English:

Sallis E.S.V., Raffi M.B. & Riet-Correa F. 2004. [Experimental poisoning in sheep with frozen or dried Ramaria flavo-brunnescens.] Postal 354, Pelotas, RS 96010-900, Brazil. E-mail: esvsallis@yahoo.com.br Ramaria flavo-brunnescens is a toxic mushroom affecting cattle and sheep. Its active principle is unknown. The experiment was done to obtain information about the toxicity of the mushroom after been frozen or dried. R. flavo-brunnescens was collected in autumn 1991. One part was frozen at –15ºC for 2-4 months, and another was dried in the shade. Other samples collected at the same time were given immediately after harvest to two sheep, at a total dose of 200 g/kg for 3 and 4 days, causing severe poisoning. The dried mushroom did not cause clinical signs at doses of 60 and 75 g/kg bw (equivalent to 400 and 500 g/kg of the fresh mushroom). The frozen mushroom at 200 g/kg bw caused hyperthermia, depression, hyperemia of the sclera and hemorrhages of the anterior chamber of the eye. Sheep that ingested 350 and 400 g/kg bw showed also nervous signs, and with the highest dose hyperemic lesions of the coronary band. All sheep recovered within 3 to 12 days. Clinical signs when given the frozen mushroom were less severe than clinical signs induced by the fresh mushroom. These results showed loss of toxicity of the dried material and decrease of toxicity of the frozen mushroom. It is suggested that chemical analyses for the toxic principle can be performed with the frozen or lyophilized mushroom.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Vianni M.C.E. & Lázaro N.S. 2003. [Profile of antimicrobial susceptibility in strains of Gram positive cocci, negative catalase, isolated from buffalo subclinical mastitis.] The susceptibility of antimicrobials was studied in Gram positive and catalase negative cocci (21 samples of Lactococcus garvieae and 6 Enterococcus gallinarum), isolated from the milk of cows with subclinical mastitis, belonging to six buffalo herds in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The test used was diffusion of disks in agar Müller Hinton, according to recommendations of the National Committee for Clinicai Laboratory Standards - NCCLS. There were tested disks with ampicillin (10mg), cefalotin (30mg), cefotaxime (30mg), cefoxitin (30mg), doranfenicol (30mg), eritromycin (15mg), gentamycin (10mg), nitrofurantoin (300mg), norfloxacin (10mg), penicillin (1 O IU), tetracydin (30mg) and vancomycin (30mg). The results showed that with Lactococcus garvieae, the most efficient antimicrobial was nitrofurantoin, revealing 85.71% sensibility, followed by cefotaxime (61.90%), vancomycin (52.38%), norfloxacin (47.62%) and cefalotin (47.62%). The highest resistance was developed against penicillin and ampicillin, with 95.24% resistance for the two antimicrobials. The susceptibility profile developed by the strains of Enterococcus gallinarum showed low sensibility against the tested antimicrobials; the highest resistance observed was against eritromycin and gentamycin, with 33.34% sensibility for both. The antimicrobial evaluation showed 100% resistance against vancomycin and tetracyclin, followed by cloranfenicol, penicillin, ampicillin, cefoxitin, cefotaxim, norfloxacin and nitrofurantoin; all of them showed a resistance of 83.33% with the samples tested.

#293 - Clinical and hematological evaluation of Nelore calves experimentally infected with isolates of Babesia bigemina from the Southeastern, Northeastern and Northern regions of Brazil, 23(2):52-60

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Mendonça C.L., Vieira D., Kohayagawa A., Schenk M.A.M., Madruga C.R. & Afonso J.A.B. 2003. [Clinical and hematological evaluation of Nelore calves experimentally infected with isolates of Babesia bigemina from the Southeastern, Northeastern and Northern regions of Brazil.] Fed. Rural de Pernambuco, Cx. Postal 152, Garanhuns, PE 55292-901, Brazil. A comparative study was made regarding the clinical and hematological alterations caused by isolates of Babesia bigemina from southeastern, northeastern and northern Brazil in experimentally infected Nelore calves. Eighteen calves between 7 and 9 months of age, without antibodies against Babesia sp and raised free from ticks, were used. Three animais were previously inoculated with 2.0x109 parasitic erythrocytes (PE) for each stabilate. The other 15 calves were subdivided into three groups, with five animais each, that were subinoculated with 1.0x1010 PE of the respective isolates. The clinical and hematological alterations were evaluated by the determination of parasitaemia, haemogram, plasmatic fibrinogen, reticulocyte count, descriptive analysis of the bone marrow and erythrocytic osmotic fragility, for 30 days, totalizing seven moments of observation. The follow-up of the immunological response by the indirect fluorescent antibody test was carried out daily until the 10th day after inoculation (DAI) and after that, on the 151 20th, 25th and 30th DAI. A mild clinical manifestation of the disease was observed. The laboratory findings revealed low leveis of parasitaemia; decrease of the erythrogram values; absence of reticulocytes, initial decrease in the total count of leukocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes with a posterior elevation of the number of these cells; hypercellularity of the erythrocytic series and decrease of the myeloid: erythroid relation which was more accentuated between the 8th and 12th DAI, and an increase of the erythrocytic osmotic fragility in the groups inoculated with the Southeast and Northeast isolates. None of the three isolates of B. bigemina gave rise to the clinical characteristic form of the disease, although they induced an humoral immune response.

RESUMO.- Mendonça C.L., Vieira D., Kohayagawa A., Schenk M.A.M., Madruga C.R. & Afonso J.A.B. 2003. [Clinical and hematological evaluation of Nelore calves experimentally infected with isolates of Babesia bigemina from the Southeastern, Northeastern and Northern regions of Brazil.]

#294 - The blood and urinary values in the pre and post-parturient period of buffaloes, kept on exclusive pasture feeding., 23(2):87-92

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Oliveira C.M.C., Barbosa J.D., Pfeifer I.B. & Cardoso D.P. 2003. [The blood and urinary values in the pre and post-parturient period of buffaloes, kept on exclusive pasture feeding.] E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br Eight lactating buffaloes of the Murrah breed were used from 60 days before up to 60 days after calving, in order to evaluate alterations in the concentration of blood glucose, total plasmatic protein, haematocrit and the presence of ketonic bodies in the urine. The 5 to 10-year old buffaloes were clinically healthy and had had at least two lactations. During the experimental period the animais were maintained on Brachiaria brizantha pasture and · supplemented with a mineral mixture and water. The media concentrations of blood glucose and the media values of the haematocrit diminished significantly after calving (p<0,05). The concentrations of total plasmatic protein did not show significant variation during the pre and post-parturient period. The ketonic bodies in the pre-parturient period were only detected in the urine of one buffaloe, but after the 32nd day of lactation ketonic bodies were detected in ali animais. There was a direct relationship between the color of the urine positive by the Rothera test and blood glucose concentrations. lt can be concluded that at the beginning of lactation the buffaloes had an energetic deficit, characterized by a decline of blood glucose concentrations and the presence of ketonic bodies in the urine, and that lactation caused a progressive decline of the hematocrit, but that the concentration of total plasmatic protein did not vary during the pre and post-parturient period.

#295 - Occurrence of Salmonella sp in finishing pigs in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, 22(3):104-108

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Weiss L.H.N., Nonig R., Cardoso M. & Costa M. 2002. [Occurrence of Salmonella sp in finishing pigs in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.] Pen feces samples were taken in ten finishing farms in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and submitted to Salmonella isolation protocol. Two farms negative and one positive in the preliminary screening were chosen, and feces from 25 randomly selected pigs in each of them were individually collected. The sarne animals were later sampled (rectal swab, intestinal content and mesenteric lymph nodes) at the slaughterhouse. After the introduction of new animals into farm Nl and Pl, other 25 pigs on each farm were examined as described above. In the preliminary screening, Salmonella was isolated from pen feces samples of 3 of the 10 investigated farms. Two of these herds showed a high level contamination. Eight Salmonella serotypes (Agona, Bredeney, Lexington, London, Mbandaka, Panama, Schwartzengrund, Salmonella sp) were found, with serotypes Agona and Bredeney being the most frequent. When individual animals were sampled, Salmonella was isolated in all selected farms. Salmonella was isolated in 6.4% of feces collected on the farm, 5.3% of intestinal contents and 5.6% of lymph nodes. Antibiogram testing of the isolated strains showed 97.8% resistance to sulphonamides, 82.6% to streptomycin, 36.9% to tetracyclin and 15.2% to sulfazotrim.

ABSTRACT.- Karam F.S.C., Méndez M.C., Jarenkow j.A. & Riet-Correa F. 2002. [Phenology of four poisonous Senecio (Asteraceae) species in southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.] Med. Vet., URCAMP, Bagé, RS 96400-110, Brazil. E-mail: fernando@alternet.com.br This study aimed to determine the phenology of Senecio brasiliensis, S. oxyphyllus, S. heterotrichius and S. selloi, and their relationship with cattle poisoning in the southern region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The phenology was studied during two years in the rural area of the municipalities of Bagé and Capão do Leão. These phenological observations were made at monthly intervals during the vegetative phase, and every 15 days during the reproductive period. The plants were observed from emergence until the dispersai of seeds, considering their vigor and their relationship with environmental factors. The results indicate that whenever the environmental conditions, like moisture and light, were favorable, Senecio spp emerge. The vegetative phenophases are practically constant during ali life cycle of the plant and the whole yea1: Unfavorable environmental factors like water stress, soil management and damage by insects, associated or not, can alter the cycle of the plants and determine their permanence in the environment. The majority of the species studied behaved like annual and monocarpic plants. According with the permanence during the two years of observation, the most persistent species in the environmentwas S. heterotrichius (15% of the plants persisted during the two year period), followed by S. selloi (2,8%) and S. brasiliensis (0,9%). S. oxyphyllus did not persist for more than one year.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Schenk M.A.M., Mendonça C.L., Madruga C.R., Kohayagawa A. & Araújo F.R. 2001. [Clinical and laboratorial evaluation of Nellore cattle experimentally infected with Trypanosoma vivax] Avaliação clínico and laboratorial de bovinos nelore infectados experimentalmente com Trypanosoma vivax. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(4):157-161. Embrapa Gado de Corte, Cx. Postal 154, Campo Grande, MS 79002-970, Brazil. In arder to evaluate the clinical-laboratorial alterations, six Neil ore calves were inoculated with 107 Trypanosoma vivax isolated from Poconé region, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The animals were evaluated daily for rectal temperature, packed cell volume (PCV), parasitemia, antibody production, calor of mucous membranes, behavior and appetite. Blood and serum samples for biochemical evaluation for aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phbsphatase (AF), gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT), cholesterol, urea, creatinine, creatine kinase (CK), calcium, phosphorus and proteinogram were collected on days 4, 8, 12, 16, 23 and 30 post inoculation (DPI). During the following 6 months rectal temperature, PCV and parasitemia were evaluated weekly. T. vivax was evidenced from 1 DPI in all calves and persisted until day 30 in five of six animals. A remarkable decrease (p<0.05) of PCV mean value (25%) was observed on 10 DPI. The animals presented no alterations in their clinical or serum biochemical state during the trial. Seroconversion took place 6 and 8 DPI, and all the animals remained seropositive during the 30 days of experiment. In all the experimental animals the occurrence of T. vivax infection was verified, characterized by the increase of corporal temperature, presente of the blood protozoa and reduction of the globular volume, without altéations in the other variables analyzed. Nellore calves, when experimentally inoculated with T. vivax, are able to establish a balance between host-parasite relationship.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(4):157-161. Embrapa Gado de Corte, Cx. Postal 154, Campo Grande, MS 79002-970, Brazil.

#298 - A comparative study between cytology and histopathology for the diagnosis of canine neoplasms, 21(1):23-32

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Magalhães A.M., Ramadinha, R.R., Barros C.S.L. & Peixoto, P.V. 2001. [A comparative study between cytology and histopathology for the diagnosis of canine neoplasms] Estudo comparativo entre citopatologia e histopatologia no diagnóstico de neoplasias caninas. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(1):23-32. Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. A comparative study between cytology and histopathology of various neoplasms from 150 dogs was carried out. Severa) staining methods including Wright, May-Gri.inwald-Giemsa, NewMethylene Blue and Papanicolau, and histological staining methods such as Hematoxilin & Eosin, van Gieson, Sudan, Toluidine Blue and PeriodicAcid Schiffwere used. The data obtained indicated an 85.3% accuracy for the cytological diagnosis when the histopathological diagnosis was considered as the correct parameter. In 4.0% of the cases only the embrionary origin of the neoplasrns was determined, and in 1.3% only the prognosis was established. The cytological diagnosis differed from the histopathological diagnosis in 8.1% of the cases. In two cases (1.3%), although the cytological anel histopathological diagnoses differed, a reexamination determined that the former was correct which increased its accuracy up to 86.6%. Fine needle aspiration biopsy proved to be the best technique to obtain samples for the study. Cytology was found not suitable for the diagnosis of mammary neoplasms due to the wide variation of the cytological aspects from different areas. The imprint on slides is a technique not recommended to evaluate mesenchymal tumors and should be replaced by exfoliative cytology. The Wright method proved to be the more efficient staining method. Adapted staining methods from histopathology such as van Gieson for leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas, Sudan Black B for lipomas anel liposarcomas, and Periodic Acid of Schiff and Toluidine Blue for mastocytomas, were especially useful in visualizing the fine morphological details of various epithelial anel mesenchymal neoplasms examined.

RESUMO.- Magalhães A.M., Ramadinha, R.R., Barros C.S.L. & Peixoto, P.V. 2001. [A comparative study between cytology and histopathology for the diagnosis of canine neoplasms] Estudo comparativo entre citopatologia e histopatologia no diagnóstico de neoplasias caninas.

Hundred and fifty frozen broiler carcasses of four commercial brands, purchased at retail stores for Salmonella research, were examined: 43 of the carcasses referred to each of the brands A, B, D and 21 of brand C. Thirty-two percent of the samples were found positive; 11 serotypes were identified as S. Agona, S. Anatum, S. Enteritidis, S. Hadar, S. Havana, S. Mbandaka, S. Montevideo, S. Ouakam, S. Poona, S. Schwarzengrund and S.14, 5, 12:-. Antibiogram testing of the isolated strains showed 100% resistance to ampicilin, 75.0% to cefhalotin, 52.1 % to cephoxitin, 22.9% to tobramicin, 6.2% to polimixin B and to tetracyclines, 4.2% to gentamicin, and 2.1% to netilmicin, to aztreonam and to amicacin. All strains showed total sensibility to chloramphenicol and to sulfazotrim.

#300 - A new concept in prophylaxis and therapy: paramunization by poxvirus inducers, 19(3/4):91-98

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Mayr A. & Mayr B. 1999. A new concept in prophylaxis and therapy: paramunization by poxvirus inducers. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 19(3/4):91-98. Lehrstuhl für Mikrobiologie und Seuchenlehre der Tierarztlichen Fakultat der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat München, Veterinarstrage 13, D-80539 München, Germany. The so-called primitive, innate or paraspecific immune system is the phylogenetically older part of the complex immune system. It enables the organism to immediately attack various foreign substances, infectious pathogens, toxins and transformed cells of the organism itself. „Paramunity" is defined as an optimal regulated and activated, antigen-nonspecific defence, acquired through continuous active and succesful confrontation with endogenous and exogenous noxes or by means of „paramunization" with so called . „paramunity inducers". Paramunity inducers based on different pox virus species (e.g. Baypamun®, Duphapind®, Conpind) have turned out to be effective and safe when applied with human beings as well as with animals. Pox virus inducers activate phagocytosis and NK-cells in addition to regulation of various cytokines, notably interferon a and g, IL 1, 2, CSF and TNF which comprise the network of the complex paraspecific immune system. The results of experimental work as well as practical use in veterinary medicine have shown that paramunization by pox inducers goes far beyond the common understanding of so-called „immuno-therapy". They are „bioregulators", beca use they have 1. a regulatory effect on a disturbed immune system in the sense of an optimal homoeostasis, and 2. Simultaneously a regulatory effect between the immune, nervous, circulatory and hormone system. Therefore, the use of paramunization by pox inducers opens a new way of prophylaxis and therapy, not only with regard to infections, but also with regard to different other indications.
