ABSTRACT.- Portela R.A., Carvalho K.S., Ahid S.M.M., Felippe-Bauer M.L. & Riet-Correa F. 2012. [Sazonal allergic dermatitis in hair sheep from northeastern Brazil.] Dermatite alérgica sazonal em ovinos deslanados no Nordeste do Brasil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 32(6):471-476. Hospital Veterinário, Centro de Saúde e Tecnologia Rural, Campus de Patos, Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Patos, PB 58700-970, Brazil. E-mail: franklin.riet@pq.cnpq.br Seasonal allergic dermatitis is reported in a flock of 40 hair sheep of the Santa Inês breed, in the county of Jucurutú, State of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil. For the epidemiologic and clinical observations the farm was visited periodically from 2007 to 2010. The flock was raised extensively in a Paddock crossed by the Piranhas river, and had also a permanent pond. Between 2007 and 2009, 13 (32.5%) sheep out of 40 were affected. The lesions were observed during the raining season, regressed total or partially during the dry season, and reappeared in the next raining period. Sheep removed to other region recovered. At the end of 2009, all affected sheep were removed from the flock. Three new cases appeared in 2010. The skin of the affected sheep was whitish, irregularly thickened, with alopecia, crusts, and intense pruritus. Those lesions were localized more frequently in the head (ears and periocular and frontal regions) but in some animals the dorsum and croup were also affected. Histologic lesions of the epidermis were hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, hypergranulosis, and moderate spongiosis. The dermis showed infiltration by eosinophils, macrophages and plasma cells, mainly perivascular. The hair follicles showed keratosis and the sudoriparous glands were dilated. No changes were observed in the differential blood count. In April and June 2010 insects were captured by the use of CDC light trap. Forty three out of 110 dipterous captured were identified as Culicoides insignis Lutz. It is concluded that the disease is a seasonal allergic dermatitis associated with C. insignis bites.

RESUMO.- Portela R.A., Carvalho K.S., Ahid S.M.M., Felippe-Bauer M.L. & Riet-Correa F. 2012. [Sazonal allergic dermatitis in hair sheep from northeastern Brazil.]

ABSTRACT.- Souza T.M., Brum J.S., Fighera R.A., Brass K.E. & Barros C.S.L. 2011. [Prevalence of equine skin tumors diagnosed at the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology of the Federal University Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.] E-mail: teitsouza@yahoo.com.br The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the equine skin tumors diagnosed at the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology (LPV) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM). Cases of equine skin biopsies diagnosed between January 1999 and December 2009 and filed at the LPV-UFSM were reviewed. In all cases the morphological diagnosis considered was the one written in the filed biopsy report. During the period studied 139 equine skin biopsies were submitted to the LPV-UFSM. Out of those, 108 (77.6%) were skin tumors, neoplastic or otherwise and 31 cases were non-tumoral dermatosis. Fifty three of the 108 horses were females (49.1%), 37 (34.2% %) were males and in 18 cases (16.7%) the sex was not stated in the report. Sixty six affected horse (61.1%) were purebreds, 13 (12%) were crosses and in 29 instances (26.9%) the breed was not stated in the report. The Crioulo was the most prevalent breed (44/108 [40.7%]) and the remaining 22 purebreds horses were distribute among seven different breed. The most prevalent age categories affected in decreasing order were 1-5 year-old (47/108 [43.5%]) and 6-14 year-old (21/108 [19.5%]); 12 horses (11,1%) were 15 year-old or above .Only one horse was less than 1-year-old. In 27 reports the age was not mentioned. More prevalent tumors included equine sarcoid (62/108 [57.4%]); squamous cell carcinomas (11/108 [10.2%]); pythiosis (9/108 [8.3%]); granulation tissue (“proud flesh”) (7/108 [6.5%]) and eosinophilic granuloma (4/108 [3.8%]). The remaining tumors accounted for approximately 14% of the cases.

E-mail: teitsouza@yahoo.com.br The current study was aimed at determine the prevalence of non-tumorous canine dermatopathies affecting dogs from the municipality of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. From March 2005 to June de 2008, the authors followed-up canine dermatological cases from two sources: those referred to the Dermatology Sector of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria and those from a private practice. During this period 480 dogs with dermatological problems were examined; in 393 (81.9%) it was possible to establish a definitive diagnosis and in 87 (18.1%) the diagnosis was inconclusive. Four hundred and twenty four primary diagnosis and 78 secondary diagnosis were performed in the 393 dogs with conclusive diagnosis, totaling 502 diagnosis. The distribution of the diagnosis according to the categories of diagnosed dermatopathies was as follows: Allergic (190/502 [37.8%]), bacterial (103/502 [20.5%]), parasitic (97/502 [19.3%]), environmental (28/502 [5,6%]), mycotic (20/502 [4.0%]), endocrine (13/502 [2.6%]), keratinization disturbances (11/502 [2.2%]), psychogenic (9/502 [1.8%]), acquired alopecias (6/502 [1.2%]), autoimmune (6/502 [1.2%]), inherited (6/502 [1.2%]), pigmentary disturbances (1/502 [0.2%], nutritional (1/502 [0.2%]), and sundry conditions (11/502 [2.2%]). In general, the ten most frequently diagnosed non-tumorous dermatopathies in decreasing order of frequency were: Atopy, flea bite allergic dermatitis, bacterial folliculitis, demodectic mange, deep bacterial folliculitis/furunculosis, sarcoptic mange, myiasis, food allergy, traumatic pyoderma, and Malassezia dermatitis. These 10 conditions together made up approximately for three quarters of all canine skin diseases diagnosed in the current study.
