E-mail: hipiatra@gmail.com The fatty acid composition in the diet can affect the productive performance and the immune system of broiler chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the consumption of oils rich in omega-6 (n-6 PUFA) and omega-3 (n-3 PUFA) polyunsaturated fatty acids on the performance and the immune response of broilers submitted to an antigenic challenge. Diets were formulated with either 7% soybean oil (SO), linseed oil (LO) or sardine oil (PO) and provided to 240 Cobb broilers which were divided into 24 groups of 10 birds each, following a 3x2 experimental arrangement (3 types of oil and vaccinated or non-vaccinated birds) and four replications. Soybean oil is rich in linoleic acid (n-6 PUFA), linseed oil a source of alfa-linolenic acid (n-3 PUFA) and the sardine oil is a source of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (other n-3 PUFA). Feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were evaluated at 21, 35 and 42 days. Half of the birds were vaccinated against Newcastle disease at 7 and 21 days. Fifteen days after the immunization, the production of antibodies was evaluated by ELISA and expressed by optical density at 450 nm (O.D. 450 nm). Only the birds fed ration containing SO presented higher humoral immune response (p<0.05) after vaccination. The lymphoproliferative response, which expresses the cellular immunity, was higher in vaccinated than in the unvaccinated birds (P<0.05), regardless of the oil used. Neither the oil source in the ration nor the vaccination influenced birds’ weight gain (P>0.05). The vaccination impaired the feed conversion of the birds fed diet containing SO (P<0.05) but did not influence feed conversion of the birds fed rations with LO or PO (P>0.05). The use of oil rich in n-6 PUFA in broilers’ diet increased humoral response, but did not influence the cellular response against an antigenic challenge.

#12 - Performance of dairy heifers raised on Xaraés palissadgrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés) pasture supplemented with two types of mineral mixture, 34(1):46-50

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Carvalho C.A.B., Peres A.A.C., Premazzi L.M., Malafaia P., Carvalho M.I.A.B., Paciullo D.S.C. & Costa V.A.C. 2014. Performance of dairy heifers raised on Xaraés palissadgrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés) pasture supplemented with two types of mineral mixture. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 34(1):46-50. Departamento de Nutrição Animal e Pastagem, Instituto de Zootecnia, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. E-mail: malafaia_ufrrj@yahoo.com.br The effects of selective (e.g. mineral supplement formulated on the basis of nutritional and clinical examination of the herd) or commercial mineral supplementation of crossbred dairy heifers (Holstein-Mantiqueira), on daily weight gain (DWG), body condition score (BCS), age at first mating (AFM) and the intake of mineral mixture (IMM) managed on Xaraés palissadgrass pasture (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés) were evaluated from February 2006 to March 2008. Structural characteristics, forage allowance and nutritional value of Xaraés palissadgrass were also evaluated. The structural variables of pasture, allowances and nutritive value of forage, besides the DWG were only affected (p<0.05) by season, with highest results for spring and summer. Throughout the experimental period (730 days), no sign of mineral deficiency was detected in heifers that ingested the selective supplement. The DWG and AFM were not influenced by the mineral mixture offered (0.52 and 0.33 kg/day during the spring/summer and in fall/winter for DWG, respectively, and 813 days of AFM). The IMM was higher for commercial mineral mixture than for selective (61.6 and 51.0g/day respectively). The BCS was slightly higher for selective (3.17) than for the commercial (3.02) mineral mixture. Thus, the selective mineral supplement was a strategy to prevent mineral deficiency in this herd and resulted in similar performance at lower costs (e.g. due to less IMM) of crossbred heifers when compared with the commercial mineral supplementation.

#14 - Reproductive performance in bovine receipts non infected and naturally infected with Neospora caninum after embryo transfer, 33(8):970-974

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Sturaro L.G.R., Zanenga C.A., Pedroso M.F., Palazzi E.G., Queiroz R.K.R. & D´Angelo M. 2013. [Reproductive performance in bovine receipts non infected and naturally infected with Neospora caninum after embryo transfer.] Conselheiro Rodrigues Alves 1252, Vila Mariana, São Paulo, SP 04014-002, Brazil. E-mail: luisgustavo_vet@yahoo.com.br The use of knowledge in biotechnologies for improving the production of goods and services has advanced significantly. The control of infectious diseases continues to represent the most obstacle to the health of animals. The embryonic loss may be responsible for the increase in economic losses for producers isolated from cattle. Infection with Neospora caninum has emerged as an important reproductive disease and, in several countries, has been diagnosed as the main cause of abortion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive performance in not contaminated and naturally infected with Neospora caninum bovine receipt after embryos transfer (ET). The choice of animals (n=395) for the experiment was performed by gynecological evaluation, via transrectal palpation. Vaccinations recommended for health protocol followed the ET. Nutritional management was based on the National Research Council (NRC, 1999). The ET of thawed embryos was made after the synchronization of the estrous cycle of the receipts. To evaluate the reproductive performance of transrectal ultrasonography was used. The identification of the positive receipts for Neospora caninum was performed by ELISA and reagents for samples, confirmation by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). Data were analyzed using Past® and were considered statistically significant (P<0.01). The results show a rate of pregnant (n=191) of 48.35%, followed by an abortion rate at 60 days of gestation (n=14) and 3.5% of abortions in the sixth month of gestation (n=12) of 3.04%. These results become relevant when taking into consideration that infected receipts by the protozoan not showed a high rate of pregnancy loss. The statistical insignificance of the data obtained in this study provides the security suggesting that there is no need to deploy the diagnosis or prior control to neosporosis in receipts able to ET.

#15 - Weight gain of Nelore cattle supplemented with different phosphorus sources, 33(2):188-192

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Lemos G.C., Costa R.M., Neto M.G. & Malafaia P. 2013. [Weight gain of Nelore cattle supplemented with different phosphorus sources.] E-mail: malafaia_ufrrj@yahoo.com.br Weight gain and possible interference of fluoride on animal health was investigated in Nellore cattle supplemented during 866 days with alternative sources of phosphorus with different phosphorus:fluor (P:F) ratios. The five treatments were: (1) Negative control (NC, without any supplemental P), (2) dicalcium phosphate (DCP 120:1, DCP 30:1 and DCP 10:1), (3) monodicalcium phosphate (MDCP 60:1), (4) triple superphosphate (TSF 30:1), and (5) cajati rock phosphate (RP 10:1). We used 49 oxen weaned with 8 months of age and an average weight of 230 kg, distributed into seven paddocks with water and mineral mixture formulated without P. A standard diet consisting of sugar cane bagasse (0.03% P) as roughage and a concentrate containing 0.239% P was provided on 1% of live weight to allow a weight gain of about 0.50 kg/day. Until day 134, there was no statistical difference between the various groups, including the treatment NC which received no supplemental phosphorus in the diet and gained weight of 71.6 kg or 0.633 kg/day. After 866 days of confinement (2.37 years), the oxen supplemented with dicalcium phosphate standard (120:1) gained less weight than those supplemented with sources MDCP 60:1, DCP 30:1 and TSF 30:1. Up to one year of supplementation with dicalcium phosphate artificially fluoridated with NaF or with rock phosphate did not result in damage to health or in weight gain of the animals. Analyses of phosphorus in bones showed statistical difference between treatments, and group NC that did not receive any supplemental P showed the lowest values. The concentration of fluoride in bones proved to be closely related to the amount of fluoride available in the sources used. As the ratio P:F in the diet decreased, characteristic signs related to dental fluorosis became more evident, and the animals that received P supplies with 10:1 ratio showed at the end of the experiment permanent malformed incisor teeth, brittle and whitish stained.

RESUMO.- Lemos G.C., Costa R.M., Neto M.G. & Malafaia P. 2013. [Weight gain of Nelore cattle supplemented with different phosphorus sources.]

E-mail: davetpat@ufrgs.br Over the last decades, the emphasis on the health of dairy cows has changed from an individual to a herd level. In this scenario, the role played by the recording system and its interpretation by veterinarians has gained primordial importance. The records of productive and reproductive performance and of sanitary status from a southern Brazilian dairy cattle herd have been presented and discussed. The period of study was 2000-2009. Mean values per lactation period were 349D 8436M 290F 275P 201SCS (D: days in lactation, M: kg of milk yield, F: kg of fat, P: kg of protein and SCS: somatic cell score in 1000 cells/ml of milk). Major indexes of reproductive efficiency included age at first calving (31 months), services per conception (2.1), intercalving interval (428 days), calving to conception interval (146 days), mean annual rates of parturitions (76.2%), fetal losses (9.8-19.0%), and stillbirths (3.6%), apart of voluntary waiting period (94 days). Main information on sanitary status of the herd was associated with the mean prevalence of common disorders of dairy cattle such as anaplasmosis (29.8%), mastitis (27.8%), digital diseases (26.3%), ovarian cysts (21.3%), placental retention (19.7%), postpartum uterine infections (10.6%), and calf diarrhea (23.7%) and pneumonia (16.8%), among others. In addition, culling reasons (low reproductive performance [56.3%] and udder/mastitis problems [33.6%]), causes of cattle deaths (anaplasmosis [16.4%] and leukosis [11.4]), and the impact of cattle diseases such as tuberculosis, leukosis, and neosporosis on the herd have also been presented and succinctly discussed. Numbers between brackets represent rates accumulated in the 10-year period.

E-mail: saravilar@bol.com.br The experiment was performed to determine the kid management that ensures the best passive immunity, and to evaluate the relationship between passive immunity, neonatal morbidity and performance. Blood samples were obtained from 58 Saanen kids before colostrum ingestion and 30h after. The kids were submitted to five treatments: (T1) kids were allowed to nurse the dam for 24 hours ingesting colostrum ad libitum; (T2) kids were bottle-fed with 200mL colostrum in the first hour of life; (T3) kids were bottle-fed with 400 mL colostrum, 200mL in the first hour and 200mL 8 hours after birth; (T4) kids were bottle-fed with 400mL colostrum, 200mL in the first hour and 200mL 14 hours after birth; (T5) kids were bottle-fed with 600mL of colostrum, 200mL in the first hour, 200ml 12 hours after birth, and 200mL at 24 hours of life. Serum levels of gamaglobulins were determined by electrophoresis. The occurrence of diseases was monitored from birth to 28 days. Daily weight gains were used to evaluate the performance until weaning. The lowest concentration of g-globulin was observed in Group 2 (1,57g/dL) and the highest in Group 3 (2,60g/dL). In spite of higher levels of passive immunity Group 3 showed more animals with scours, however no statistical differences were observed. The immune status at 30 hours postpartum was not associated with neonatal weight gain.

[Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements.] E-mail: malafaia1@ig.com.br Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements were evaluated during 148 days in Seropédica county, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were daily fed with fresh and chopped Andropogon gayanus or Pennisetum purpureum; the concentrate ration was formulated without a mineral mixture and was offered together with the forage of 300 up to 500 g/animal/day. Sixteen goats were divided into two groups of 8 animals each (4 small and 4 larger goats). For one group a commercial mineral mixture was used, and to the other group a selective mineral mixture containing only Na, P and Cu was offered. The animals were weighed every 30 days and the mineral supplement intake was measured monthly. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and the end of the experimental period. There was no difference in daily weight gain when the selective or commercial mixture was given for both groups. The selective mineral supplementation was 2.3 (for the smaller animals) and 3.9 (for larger animals) times more economic than the conventional supplementation with a “complete” mineral mix. The two groups showed recovery of hair quality and had an increase of hair pigmentation around the eyes, which was attributed to the correction of copper deficiency. In the larger animals the intake of both supplements increased the red blood cells counts, and the haematocrit and haemoglobin values. The forage intake was sufficient to meet the Ca and Co needs of the animals, and for P the concentrate intake was sufficient to overcome the demand for this element. The requirement of zinc was supplied through the forage and the concentrate ration. Thus, when an adequate concentrate and a good quality forage is given, only the deficient mineral element(s) should be supplemented. In this specific case only Na and Cu should be given. The result of this experiment confirms the hypothesis that selective mineral supplementation – i.e. supplementation of the mineral element(s) deficient in the diet – was correct and can result in reduction of the cost with the mineral supplementation of a herd.

#19 - Effect of a management system on grazing behaviour, ponderal growth and parasitie infestation of Suffolk ewes

Abstract in English:

Grazing behaviour, ponderal growth and level of parasitic infestation were studied in Suffolk breed sheep, from 1994 to 1995, in Nova Odessa, São Paulo. Two management systems were compared: restricted grazing, where the animals were released to the pastures at 9:50am and confined at 5:30pm, and 24 hour grazing, where the animals were maintained all the time in the paddocks, but with access to shelters. Thirty-four adult ewes were used in the summer period (17 under restricted grazing and 17 full-time grazing), and 42 ewes in the winter period (21 with restricted grazing and 21 full-time grazing). Also, for both seasons, 12 traceranimals, six in each grazing system, were used to obtain worm counts from their digestive tracts. For three consecutive days, grazing behaviour, that is, whether grazing or not, was observed in January/February (summer) and July/August (winter) at 30 minute intervals from 7:00am to 5:30pm, also whether the animals stayed in the sun or shade, irrespective of whether they were grazing or not. The level of parasitic infestation was evaluated under each system by eggs per gram countings (EPG) of the herd and the traceranimals, as well as by larvae count. It was concluded that restriction of grazing time by itself does not provide any effective control of parasitic infestation in sheep, however a better control was obtained in the summer period. Restricted grazing time was compensated by the greater activity of the animals during the hotter hours of the day, however, this behaviour affected the animal performance, resulting in lower weight gains. Greater forage availability in relation to estimated consumption may explain the similarity between the grazing times observed in both management systems, either in the summer or in the winter.
