E-mail: jufaveri@yahoo.com.br The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance and intestinal morphology of growing broilers, with and without addition of nucleotides in the diet at different protein levels. A total of 868 21-day-old male Cobb broiler chicks were used in a completely randomized design. The diets were: control with high crude protein (18.86%) and low crude protein (16.80%), both without nucleotides, meeting the requirement of 1.062% digestible lysine; and five treatments with the addition of 0.5 kg of nucleotides/ton of feed, with different levels of digestible lysine (1.262%, 1.162%, 1.062%, 0962% and 0.862%), all formulated based on the low-protein diet (16.80%), with four replications each. Feed intake (g) decreased linearly (P≤0.05) in the period from 20 to 27, 20 to 35, and 20 to 42 days of age; feed intake decreased by increasing levels of lysine in the diet. Feed-to-gain ratio showed a quadratic effect (P≤0.05) for birds of the period from 20 to 27, 20 to 35 and 20 to 42 days of age, decreasing as levels of digestible lysine increased, with minimum levels reaching 1.119%, 1.187% and 1.132% digestible lysine, respectively. The diet with 1.062% of lysine did not differ (P>0.05) from the negative control for villus height and crypt depth in the duodenum.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Pinto M.F., Lima V.M.F., Ribeiro S.C., Bossolani I.L.C., Ponsano E.H.G. & Garcia-Neto M. 2014. [Sources of oil in the diet and its influence on the performance and the immunity of broilers.] E-mail: hipiatra@gmail.com The fatty acid composition in the diet can affect the productive performance and the immune system of broiler chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the consumption of oils rich in omega-6 (n-6 PUFA) and omega-3 (n-3 PUFA) polyunsaturated fatty acids on the performance and the immune response of broilers submitted to an antigenic challenge. Diets were formulated with either 7% soybean oil (SO), linseed oil (LO) or sardine oil (PO) and provided to 240 Cobb broilers which were divided into 24 groups of 10 birds each, following a 3x2 experimental arrangement (3 types of oil and vaccinated or non-vaccinated birds) and four replications. Soybean oil is rich in linoleic acid (n-6 PUFA), linseed oil a source of alfa-linolenic acid (n-3 PUFA) and the sardine oil is a source of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (other n-3 PUFA). Feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were evaluated at 21, 35 and 42 days. Half of the birds were vaccinated against Newcastle disease at 7 and 21 days. Fifteen days after the immunization, the production of antibodies was evaluated by ELISA and expressed by optical density at 450 nm (O.D. 450 nm). Only the birds fed ration containing SO presented higher humoral immune response (p<0.05) after vaccination. The lymphoproliferative response, which expresses the cellular immunity, was higher in vaccinated than in the unvaccinated birds (P<0.05), regardless of the oil used. Neither the oil source in the ration nor the vaccination influenced birds’ weight gain (P>0.05). The vaccination impaired the feed conversion of the birds fed diet containing SO (P<0.05) but did not influence feed conversion of the birds fed rations with LO or PO (P>0.05). The use of oil rich in n-6 PUFA in broilers’ diet increased humoral response, but did not influence the cellular response against an antigenic challenge.

#13 - Performance of dairy heifers raised on Xaraés palissadgrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés) pasture supplemented with two types of mineral mixture, 34(1):46-50

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Carvalho C.A.B., Peres A.A.C., Premazzi L.M., Malafaia P., Carvalho M.I.A.B., Paciullo D.S.C. & Costa V.A.C. 2014. Performance of dairy heifers raised on Xaraés palissadgrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés) pasture supplemented with two types of mineral mixture. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 34(1):46-50. Departamento de Nutrição Animal e Pastagem, Instituto de Zootecnia, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. E-mail: malafaia_ufrrj@yahoo.com.br The effects of selective (e.g. mineral supplement formulated on the basis of nutritional and clinical examination of the herd) or commercial mineral supplementation of crossbred dairy heifers (Holstein-Mantiqueira), on daily weight gain (DWG), body condition score (BCS), age at first mating (AFM) and the intake of mineral mixture (IMM) managed on Xaraés palissadgrass pasture (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés) were evaluated from February 2006 to March 2008. Structural characteristics, forage allowance and nutritional value of Xaraés palissadgrass were also evaluated. The structural variables of pasture, allowances and nutritive value of forage, besides the DWG were only affected (p<0.05) by season, with highest results for spring and summer. Throughout the experimental period (730 days), no sign of mineral deficiency was detected in heifers that ingested the selective supplement. The DWG and AFM were not influenced by the mineral mixture offered (0.52 and 0.33 kg/day during the spring/summer and in fall/winter for DWG, respectively, and 813 days of AFM). The IMM was higher for commercial mineral mixture than for selective (61.6 and 51.0g/day respectively). The BCS was slightly higher for selective (3.17) than for the commercial (3.02) mineral mixture. Thus, the selective mineral supplement was a strategy to prevent mineral deficiency in this herd and resulted in similar performance at lower costs (e.g. due to less IMM) of crossbred heifers when compared with the commercial mineral supplementation.

#15 - Reproductive performance in bovine receipts non infected and naturally infected with Neospora caninum after embryo transfer, 33(8):970-974

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Sturaro L.G.R., Zanenga C.A., Pedroso M.F., Palazzi E.G., Queiroz R.K.R. & D´Angelo M. 2013. [Reproductive performance in bovine receipts non infected and naturally infected with Neospora caninum after embryo transfer.] Conselheiro Rodrigues Alves 1252, Vila Mariana, São Paulo, SP 04014-002, Brazil. E-mail: luisgustavo_vet@yahoo.com.br The use of knowledge in biotechnologies for improving the production of goods and services has advanced significantly. The control of infectious diseases continues to represent the most obstacle to the health of animals. The embryonic loss may be responsible for the increase in economic losses for producers isolated from cattle. Infection with Neospora caninum has emerged as an important reproductive disease and, in several countries, has been diagnosed as the main cause of abortion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive performance in not contaminated and naturally infected with Neospora caninum bovine receipt after embryos transfer (ET). The choice of animals (n=395) for the experiment was performed by gynecological evaluation, via transrectal palpation. Vaccinations recommended for health protocol followed the ET. Nutritional management was based on the National Research Council (NRC, 1999). The ET of thawed embryos was made after the synchronization of the estrous cycle of the receipts. To evaluate the reproductive performance of transrectal ultrasonography was used. The identification of the positive receipts for Neospora caninum was performed by ELISA and reagents for samples, confirmation by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). Data were analyzed using Past® and were considered statistically significant (P<0.01). The results show a rate of pregnant (n=191) of 48.35%, followed by an abortion rate at 60 days of gestation (n=14) and 3.5% of abortions in the sixth month of gestation (n=12) of 3.04%. These results become relevant when taking into consideration that infected receipts by the protozoan not showed a high rate of pregnancy loss. The statistical insignificance of the data obtained in this study provides the security suggesting that there is no need to deploy the diagnosis or prior control to neosporosis in receipts able to ET.

#16 - Effect of oral administration of Propionibacterium acnes on growth performance, DTH response and anti-OVA titers in goat kids, 33(1):5-10

ABSTRACT.- Ferrer L.M., Fernández A., Loste A., Ortín A., Lacasta D., Ramos J.J., Verde M.T. & Conde T. 2013. Effect of oral administration of Propionibacterium acnes on growth performance, DTH response and anti-OVA titers in goat kids. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 33(1):5-10. Departamento de Patología Animal, Facultad de Veterinaria, Universidad de Zaragoza, Miguel Servet 177, 50013-Zaragoza, Spain. E-mail: afmedica@unizar.es Immunostimulants are susbstances that stimuli the response of effector cells to activate the immune response such as antigen uptake, cytokine release or antibody response. These substances can increase resistence to infection by different types of microorganisms, reducing dependence of antibiotics used in livestock animals. Recent reports have demonstrated the positive effect of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) to control animal diseases. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the non-specific immunostimulant P. acnes on immunological functions and growth performance in goat kids. Twenty five goat kids served as control group (A) and another 25 animals received P. acnes being the experimental group (B). Kids were challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) to assess humoral immunity. To assess in vivo cell immunity, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) test with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was used, clinical signs and body weight were recorded each week until 9 weeks of age when the experiment ended. Blood samples were obtained to analyze serum proteins fractions and anti-OVA specific antibodies. No clinical signs of disease and no differences (p>0.05) on body weight between groups were recorded (7.32±0.81 kg in group A, 7.13±0.65 kg in group B). Goat kids from group B had more total protein (59.8±5g/l) and albumin levels (32.8±3.3g/l) than goat kids from group A (56.6±5.7 g/l, 29.6±3.9 g/l respectively) (p<0.05). DTH response in goat kids from group B on day 42 was higher (p<0.05) than group A. At day 63, goat kids from group receiving P. acnes had higher percentage (85.4) of anti-OVA IgM titers (p<0.05) than control group (57.7). In conclusion, the results showed that oral administration of P. acnes to goat kids improved some aspects of the immune system of the animals and it could be used to control goat diseases.

#17 - Effects of starter diet supplementation with arginine on broiler production performance and on small intestine morphometry, 32(3):259-266

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Murakami A.E., Fernandes J.I.M., Hernandes L. & Santos T.C. 2012. [Effects of starter diet supplementation with arginine on broiler production performance and on small intestine morphometry.] E-mail: aemurakami@uem.br The effects of starter diet (days 1 to 21) supplemented with arginine (Arg) on the production performance and duodenum and jejunum mucosa morphometry of broilers were studied. Male Cobb broiler chickens (990) were randomly assigned to one of five treatments in a complete random design. Measurements of 33 chicks per treatment were made in six repetitions. The treatments consisted of a basal diet with 1.390% digestible Arg (no supplementation) and four dietary levels (1.490%, 1.590%, 1.690%, and 1.790%), providing a relationship with lysine of 1.103; 1.183; 1.262; 1.341 and 1.421%, respectively. From the age of 22 days on, all birds received conventional grower diet. The data were submitted to regression analysis by polynomial decomposition of the degrees of freedom in relation to the levels of Arg. The Arg supplementation increased (P<0.05) the live weight and the feed conversion ratio without increasing the feed intake of the birds. However, no effect was observed (P>0.05) in the growth phase (days 22 to 42) in the absence of the Arg supplementation. The supplementation of Arg over of NRC recommendation during the starter phase may be necessary for the expression of the maximal weight gain potential in birds. No effect (P<0.05) of Arg dietary supplementation was observed either on small intestine weight and length at any age. However, the duodenum villus:crypt ratio increased and the crypt depth decreased in the first week in response to increasing dietary Arg. It is concluded that broiler Arg dietary supplementation in the starter diet improved production performance and small intestine morphometry, especially in the first week.

RESUMO.- Murakami A.E., Fernandes J.I.M., Hernandes L. & Santos T.C. 2012. [Effects of starter diet supplementation with arginine on broiler production performance and on small intestine morphometry.]

#18 - Anticoccidial effects of acetic acid on performance and pathogenic parameters in broiler chickens challenged with Eimeria tenella, 31(2):99-103

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Abbas R.Z., Munawar S.H., Manzoor Z., Iqbal Z., Khan M.N., Saleemi M.K., Zia M.A. & Yousaf A. 2011. Anticoccidial effects of acetic acid on performance and pathogenic parameters in broiler chickens challenged with Eimeria tenella. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 31(2):99-103. Department of Parasitology, University of Agriculture, Faislabad 38040, Pakistan. E-mail: raouaf@hotmail.com The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anticoccidial effect of the different concentrations of the acetic acid in the broiler chickens in comparison with the amprolium anticoccidial. A total of 198 chicks were placed 11 per pen with three pens per treatment. The different concentrations (1%, 2% and 3%) of acetic acid and amproilum (at the dose rate of 125ppm) were given to the experimental groups in drinking water from 10–19th days of age. One group was kept as infected non medicated control and one as non infected non medicated control. All the groups were inoculated orally with 75,000 sporulated oocysts at the 12th day of age except non infected non medicated control. Anticoccidial effect was evaluated on the basis of performance (weight gain, feed conversion ratio) and pathogenic (oocyst score, lesion score and mortality %age) parameters. Among acetic acid medicated groups, the maximum anticoccidial effect was seen in the group medicated with 3% acetic acid followed by 2% and 1% acetic acid medicated groups. Amprolium and 3% acetic acid were almost equivalent in suppressing the negative performance and pathogenic effects associated with coccidiosis (Eimeria tenella) challenge. In summary, acetic acid has the potential to be used as alternative to chemotherapeutic drugs for Eimeria tenella control. Concentration-dependent anticoccidial effect of acetic acid suggests that further studies should be carried out to determine the possible maximum safe levels of acetic acid with least toxic effects to be used as anticoccidial.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 31(1):1-9. Setor de Patologia Veterinária, Faculdade de Veterinária, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Av. Bento Gonçalves 9090, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. E-mail: davetpat@ufrgs.br Over the last decades, the emphasis on the health of dairy cows has changed from an individual to a herd level. In this scenario, the role played by the recording system and its interpretation by veterinarians has gained primordial importance. The records of productive and reproductive performance and of sanitary status from a southern Brazilian dairy cattle herd have been presented and discussed. The period of study was 2000-2009. Mean values per lactation period were 349D 8436M 290F 275P 201SCS (D: days in lactation, M: kg of milk yield, F: kg of fat, P: kg of protein and SCS: somatic cell score in 1000 cells/ml of milk). Major indexes of reproductive efficiency included age at first calving (31 months), services per conception (2.1), intercalving interval (428 days), calving to conception interval (146 days), mean annual rates of parturitions (76.2%), fetal losses (9.8-19.0%), and stillbirths (3.6%), apart of voluntary waiting period (94 days). Main information on sanitary status of the herd was associated with the mean prevalence of common disorders of dairy cattle such as anaplasmosis (29.8%), mastitis (27.8%), digital diseases (26.3%), ovarian cysts (21.3%), placental retention (19.7%), postpartum uterine infections (10.6%), and calf diarrhea (23.7%) and pneumonia (16.8%), among others. In addition, culling reasons (low reproductive performance [56.3%] and udder/mastitis problems [33.6%]), causes of cattle deaths (anaplasmosis [16.4%] and leukosis [11.4]), and the impact of cattle diseases such as tuberculosis, leukosis, and neosporosis on the herd have also been presented and succinctly discussed. Numbers between brackets represent rates accumulated in the 10-year period.

Abstract in English:

E-mail: saravilar@bol.com.br The experiment was performed to determine the kid management that ensures the best passive immunity, and to evaluate the relationship between passive immunity, neonatal morbidity and performance. Blood samples were obtained from 58 Saanen kids before colostrum ingestion and 30h after. The kids were submitted to five treatments: (T1) kids were allowed to nurse the dam for 24 hours ingesting colostrum ad libitum; (T2) kids were bottle-fed with 200mL colostrum in the first hour of life; (T3) kids were bottle-fed with 400 mL colostrum, 200mL in the first hour and 200mL 8 hours after birth; (T4) kids were bottle-fed with 400mL colostrum, 200mL in the first hour and 200mL 14 hours after birth; (T5) kids were bottle-fed with 600mL of colostrum, 200mL in the first hour, 200ml 12 hours after birth, and 200mL at 24 hours of life. Serum levels of gamaglobulins were determined by electrophoresis. The occurrence of diseases was monitored from birth to 28 days. Daily weight gains were used to evaluate the performance until weaning. The lowest concentration of g-globulin was observed in Group 2 (1,57g/dL) and the highest in Group 3 (2,60g/dL). In spite of higher levels of passive immunity Group 3 showed more animals with scours, however no statistical differences were observed. The immune status at 30 hours postpartum was not associated with neonatal weight gain.
