Postal 6001, Londrina, PR 86051-990, Brazil. E-mail: janlisboa@uel.br Plants of the genus Senna cause a degenerative myopathy in cattle and most of the reports refer to Senna occidentalis. The aim of this paper is to report, for the second time in Brazil, an outbreak of natural poisoning by Senna obtusifolia. It happened in the northwestern Paraná in a herd of 200 cows, 45 to 152 months of age, which had been placed into a feedlot to improve their nutritional status before the calving period. The cows stayed for eight days in this feedlot infested by the plant. Four to nine days after they got into the feedlot, 20 cows became ill and only one recovered. The clinical signs consisted of myoglobinuria, incoordination and permanent sternal recumbency. The affected cows showed increased activity of creatine phosphokinase, aspartate aminotransferase, gama-glutamyltransferase, and alkaline phosphatase. The main postmortem changes were in skeletal muscles of the hind limbs characterized by pale areas. The histological alterations were multifocal segmental necrosis of skeletal muscles and hepatic multifocal paracentral necrosis. Epidemiological, clinical and pathological data led to the diagnosis of Senna obtusifolia poisoning. The plant showed miotoxic and hepatotoxic effects on the poisoned animals and the disease was almost always lethal.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Guimarães-Peixoto R.P.M., Souza V.K., Pinto P.S.A. & Santos T.O. 2012. [Distribution and identification of risk areas for bovine cysticercosis in the State of Paraná, Brazil.] PH Rolfs s/n, Viçosa, MG 36570-000, Brazil. E-mail: rafinhapaola@hotmail.com Bovine cysticercosis is a problem of public and animal health highly spread in Brazil, which has negative repercussions in meat production in several states. This is one of the most common diseases occurring in the slaughterhouses under sanitary inspection, becoming a concern for cold stores and producers, because of the losses that it entails. Little is known about the distribution and evolution of the number of cases of bovine cysticercosis in the state of Paraná. Given the above, this work aimed to perform a retrospective survey on the occurrence of bovine cysticercosis, diagnosed by post-mortem examination by the Federal Inspection Service of the State of Paraná from 2004 to 2008; determine the distribution of cases in the state; identify the areas that most likely present cases of the disease, and analyze the economic loss of the state due to the condemnations for this parasitosis. It has been found a 2.23% prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in the state of Paraná. During the period analyzed, there was a statistically significant reduction (p<0.05) of the prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in the state. In the years 2004-2008, 29,708,550 kg of beef were condemned for cysticercosis, leading to economic losses. The state of Paraná is getting, through the deployment of the control program for the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex, a positive development since it got, during the analysis period, to reduce the prevalence of this parasite in cattle and, thus, reduce the economic losses.

PH Rolfs s/n, Viçosa, MG 36570-000, Brazil.

ABSTRACT.- Hashimoto V.Y., Dias J.A., Spohr K.A.H., Silva M.C.P., Andrade M.G.B., Müller E.E. & Freitas, J.C. 2012. [Prevalence and risk factors for Leptospira spp. in cattle herds in the south central region of Paraná state.] Postal 6001, Londrina, PR 86051-990, Brazil. E-mail: freitasj@uel.br The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies and the risk factors for Leptospira spp. infection in breeding cattle herds in the south central region of Paraná state. It was based on the statistic delineation, serological samples and information regarding the selected farms employed in the study of bovine brucellosis for Paraná state in the context of National Program for Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis. A total of 1.880 females aged ≥24 months from 274 non vaccinated herds were studied. Serum samples were tested for antibodies against Leptospira spp. using microscopic agglutination test (MAT) with 22 Leptospira serovars. The epidemiological questionnaire was applied on all the selected farms and aimed to obtain epidemiological data. Hundred eighty one of 274 herds were positive for Leptospira spp., presenting prevalence of positive herds of 66.06% (IC95%=60.12-71,65%). Presence of ≥43 cattle (OR=3.120; IC=1.418-6.867), animal purchase (OR=2.010; IC=1.154-3.500), rent of pastures (OR=2.925; IC=1.060-8.068) and presence of maternity paddock (OR=1.981; IC=1,068-3,676) were identified as risk factors for leptospirosis due to any serovar in the multivariate logistic regression. Risk factors for leptospirosis due to serovar Hardjo were presence of ≥43 cattle (OR=3.622; IC=1.512-8,677), animal purchase (OR=3.143; IC=1.557-6.342), rent of pastures (OR=4.070; IC=1.370-12.087) and presence of horses (OR=2.981; IC=1.321-6.726). These results indicate that Leptospira spp. infection is widespread in the south central region of Paraná state and that factors related to the herd characteristic and management are associated with the infection.

#24 - Origin and anatomical distribution of ischiatic nerve in the crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus), 31(Supl.1):74-78

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Pereira K.F., Paranaiba J.F.F.S., Helrigle C. & Araújo E.G. 2011. [Origin and anatomical distribution of ischiatic nerve in the crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus).] Origem e distribuição anatômica do nervo isquiático de mão-pelada (Procyon cancrivorus). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 31(Supl.1):74-78. Laboratório de Anatomia Humana e Comparativa, Curso de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Goiás, Campus Jataí, BR 364 Km 192, Setor Parque Industrial, Jataí, GO 75800-000, Brazil. E-mail: kpereiraufg@gmail.com The ischiatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, belongs both to the sacral and lumbosacral plexus in carnivores, continuing until the distal hind limb, and receives fibers from the ventral branch of the sixth and seventh lumbar nerves and the first sacral nerve. We aim to describe the distribution of the sciatic nerve in raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) and compare with data of literary domestic and wild animals. The animals are coming to collect on highways (killed by accident) and subjected to fixation in aqueous solution, 10% formaldehyde. The dissection and photographic documentation (Sony α200 camera, 10.2mpx) shows the distribution of the sciatic nerve. The ischiatic nerve of raccoon innervates the hind limb passing between the middle and deep gluteal muscles, giving off branches to the muscles of the buttock and thigh, respectively, for the gluteus medius, gluteus biceps, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, biceps femoris, twins, quadratus femoris and adductor magnus, sending the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thickness and flow to supply the skin on the lateral surface of the leg and tail, respectively. Near the middle of the thigh nerve bifurcates into the tibial and peroneal nerve. The anatomical knowledge of the pattern of nervous raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) is of fundamental importance in research to refer to the distribution of the ischiatic nerve, and show no disagreement with the corresponding data in the literature of domestic carnivores.

As dissecações e documentação fotográfica permitiram observar a distribuição do nervo isquiático.

E-mail: camilelug@gmail.com Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii are associated with dry bird excreta but rarely recovered from birds’ digestive tract. The objective of the present study was (1) to verify the existence of C. neoformans and C. gattii in crop and cloaca of wildlife and captivity birds hypothesizing about a possible primary source of this yeast in the excreta, and (2) to determine the fungi’s invasive capability in avian species through latex agglutination. For that purpose, 172 cloacal and 77 crop samples of domestic pigeon, Passerine, and Psittacine birds were collected. None of these samples was positive, suggesting that the yeast is not saprobiotic in the digestive tract of these birds. Only one out of 82 serum samples collected from pigeons and Psittacine birds was positive (title 1:2) showing that Cryptococcus sp. probably has a low invasive capability in birds, and is thus considered only a dry excreta colonizer.

E-mail: muller@uel.br The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of positive herds and to identify the risk factors for BoHV-1 infection in breeding cattle herds in the Western region of Parana State. The statistic delineation, the serum samples and information regarding the selected farms, were the same employed in the study of bovine brucellosis for Parana State in the context of National Program for Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis. The sampling was performed in two stages. Blood samples were collected from 1930 females aged ³24 months from 295 non vaccinated herds. Serum samples were tested for antibodies against BoHV-1 using an indirect ELISA. The epidemiological questionnaire was applied on all the selected farms and aimed to obtain epidemiological data. Hundred ninety of the 295 herds were positive for BoHV-1, presenting prevalence of positive herds of 64.41% [58.65-69.87%]. The number (³23) of females aged 24 months (OR=2.22; IC: 1.09-4.51), purchased cattle (OR=2.68; IC: 1.48-4.82), use of common grass (OR=5.93; IC: 1.31-26.82), history of abortion in the last 12 months (OR=2.37; IC: 1.09-5.16) and presence of wildlife animals (OR=8.86; IC: 1.11-70.73) were identified as risk factors for BoHV-1 infection in the multivariate logistic regression. These results indicate that BoHV-1 infection is widespread in the studied region and that factors related to the herd characteristic and management are associated with the infection.

ABSTRACT.- Millar P.R., Daguer H., Vicente R.T., Costa T., Sobreiro L.G. & Amendoeira M.R.R. 2008. [Toxoplasma gondii: epidemiological study of pigs from southwestern Paraná, Brazil.] E-mail: patriciariddell@vm.uff.br This study evaluated the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in pigs bred and slaughtered for human consumption. The frequency of the antibody anti-Toxoplasma gondii was investigated in 408 animals from distinct piggeries of 25 cities in the southwestern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Serum samples were examined for IgG antibodies specific for T. gondii through the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). A frequency of 25.5% of serum samples tested positive for dilutions equal to or greater than 1:64. Statistically significant were not observed in relation to sex and age of the animals. The highest antibody level observed was 4,096 (3.0%) and the most frequent was 64 (74%), suggesting that a chronic infection occurred in the population. The high prevalence of the infection found in the swine herds of this region suggests that these herds can be a source of infection for individuals who typically consume this type of raw or badly cooked meat.

ABSTRACT.- Claus M.P., Vivian D., Lunardi M., Alfieri A.F. & Alfieri A.A. 2007. [Phylogenetic analysis of bovine papillomavirus associated with skin warts in cattle herds from the state of Paraná.] Análise filogenética do papilomavírus bovino associado a lesões cutâneas em rebanhos do Estado do Paraná. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 27(7):314-318. Laboratório de Virologia Animal, Departamento de Medicina Veterinária Preventiva, Centro de Ciências Agrárias, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Cx. Postal 6001, Campus Universitário, Londrina, PR 86051-990, Brazil. E-mail: alfieri@uel.br Bovine papillomavirus (BPV) infection causes hyperplastic lesions in the cutaneous epithelium of cattle. Six types of BPV were classified in two sub-groups, being correlated to the anatomical regions of the infection and morphologic characteristics of the lesions. The present study was carried out to identify the types of BPV present in skin warts of cattle from the state of Paraná, Brazil. The generic primers FAP59 and FAP64 were used for amplification of a 478 bp fragment of BPV L1 gene in nine cutaneous papilloma samples obtained from six animals in four herds. In all papillomas examined, a product with the expected molecular size was amplified. Phylogenetic analysis of the PCR products identified BPV-2 in three samples, BPV-1 in one, and BPV-6 in five papillomas. BPV-6 was detected in cutaneous papillomas of the teat and in other body parts as well. In one animal, from which more than one sample was collected, a concomitant infection by BPV-1 and BPV-2 was identified. The five positive BPV-6 samples showed a nucleotide identity of 100% with the sequence of the reference strain available in GenBank. However, differences among BPV-2 and BPV-1 Brazilian samples and the respective reference sequences deposited in GenBank were observed. Molecular comparison of the two BPV-2 strains identified showed the involvement of two viral variants. This study revealed the diversity of BPV types circulating in the state of Paraná.
