E-mail: hugost@ig.com.br We describe an outbreak of mandibular abscess in Bergamácia sheep from the municipality of Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. In a herd of 120 sheep, 35 showed an increase of the mandibular volume with presence of a single nodule of stony consistency and different sizes, often fistulated but with no signs of inflammation in the surrounding soft tissues. The sheep were raised on a Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania pasture, with water and mineral salt ad libitum, and were treated orally against parasites with drenching pistols. Material for microbiological diagnosis and antibiogram was collected from the nodules of five affected sheep, through puncture and aspiration. From 35 affected sheep, 19 were submitted to radiographic examination, one was submitted to computer tomography and another to bone biopsy of the submandibular region. The only sheep that died was in a state of cachexia, probably due to the location of the volume increase which affected the molar hindering apprehension and appropriate chewing. Necropsy revealed areas of caseous necrosis in the jaw, from where Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated. The sheep were treated with intramuscular application of 10% sodium iodide and the antobiotgic enrofloxacin, but with little efficacy. Based on the clinical data from medical records, the location of lesions in the jaw bone, the result of microbiological culture, radiographic and computer tomography, the diagnosis of mandibular abscesses due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection was made.

ABSTRACT.- Almeida M.F., Mamprim M.J., Vulcano L.C. & Rahal S.C. 2011. [Contribution of negative contrast in computed tomography arthrography of the normal canine stifle.] E-mail: mari_veterinaria@yahoo.com.br The cranial cruciate ligament rupture is one of the most common causes of canine hind limb lameness. The radiographic and ultrasonographic are methods of diagnosis frequently used in small animal clinics, but there are few studies of computed tomography to exam the stifle joint in dogs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of negative contrast in computed tomography arthrography of the normal stifle of dogs for the visualization of intra-joint structures, and to standardize the use of contrast in this joint. Twenty-four hind limbs from dogs of several breeds were used. They were selected based on history of absence of previous stifle joint disease and normal radiographic, ultrasonographic and macroscopic exams. The experiment was designed in two groups: Group I animals weighing up to 20 kg, and Group II animals weighing above 20 kg. Tomographic sections were done with the limb flexed and extended. The amount of air used for the joint capsule distension was approximately 49 ml for group I and 81 ml for group II. A latex tube was used on the distal portion of the stifle to reduce air escaping through the long digital extensor tendon, which has intra-joint communication. In all joints, the tomographic image allowed the visualization of the following structures: cranial and caudal cruciate ligament, medial and lateral menisci, patellar ligament, medial and lateral collateral ligament and joint capsule. Thus, the negative contrast (air) showed to be an effective alternative in the evaluation of the stifle anatomical structures by using tomography arthrography.

E-mail: cintiamev@hotmail.com The objective of this study was to evaluate radiographically and ultrasonographically the podotrochlear apparatus using a transcuneal approach in 22 American Quarter horses suffering from navicular syndrome. On the radiographs, different forms of synovial invaginations, calcification of the podotrochlear bursa and deep digital flexor tendon, enthesophyte and osteophyte formation, and changes in the cortical-medullary margin were observed. On the ultrasound scans, changes of the podotrochlear bursa, adhesions and irregularities at the surface of the deep digital flexor tendon, the digital cushion area reduction, calcification of the impar distal sesamoideal ligament, and irregularities of the flexor surface of the distal sesamoid bone were observed. Radiographic and ultrasonographic abnormalities compatible with navicular syndrome were present in all patients. Ultrasonography using transcuneal approach was a practical and efficient method to evaluate podotrochlear apparatus injuries in equine, thus being a complementary method to radiography.

In Wild Animal Medicine, ultrasonographic exams could be considered as a tool to diagnose and prevent disease. Ultrasonographic examination of twenty snakes (Boa constrictor) was performed in order to describe the morphological and ultrasonography appearance of their coelomic structures. Examination by ultrasonography revealed the parechymal liver ranging from slightly hypoechogenic to hyperechogenic, with echogenic margins and homogeneous echotexture in total scanning of this organ. The kidney was accessible for examination by sagittal ultrasound, showing an ellipsoid shape, a hyperechogenic capsule with a thin and regular wall. Ultrasonographic scanning of ovarian follicle showed an ovoid shape, as well as a thin, regular and slightly hyperechogenic edge. No evident structures from male reproductive system were identified by ultrasound examination because of their similar echogenic appearance to the tissues around and the “body fat” that lies in this region. Examination by ultrasound of the coelomic structures was a fast and repeatable technique, which provides useful data to recognize the morphology, sintopy and ultrasonographic appearance of organs such as liver, kidneys and vitellogenic follicles.

Departamento de Cirurgia e Anestesiologia Veterinária, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, SP 18618-000, Brazil. E-mail: cahussni@fmvz.unesp.br Thrombosis of jugular vein is a common problem in the equine medicine, implying frequently in fatal outcomes. The diagnosis is relatively simple, based on the clinical findings, angiographics images and ultrasonographycs. The therapeutic employed to a large extent of the cases is unsatisfactory. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the thrombectomy with Fogarty’s catheter in horses. This technique is routinely used in medicine, in the reestablishment of the vascular perviousness. Ten horses were allocated in two groups (five animals each) and induced to an unilateral thrombosis of right jugular vein, through the surgical access and an application of stenotic suture and glucose 50% injection. In the control group evolution of the thrombophlebitis without any therapeutical intervention was evaluated. The animals of the treatment group were submitted to the thrombectomy with Fogarty’s catheter. General clinical parameters were analyzed at the moment of the preinduction (MPRE), induction of thrombosis (MTI), and at the 10th day of thrombosis evolution (M10). The procedure induced thrombophlebitis that completely obstructed a segment of the jugular vein in all animals. In the animals of the control group, the thrombus totally obstructed the vascular lumen until the end of the period of evaluation, and parotid edema and vascular dilated, cranial to the thrombophlebitis of jugular vein were observed. The treatment group presented all veins pervious in the end of the experiment, with total remission of the clinical signs, confirmed by angiographic and ultrasonographic examinations. So far, it was concluded that the technique of thrombectomy with Fogarty’s catheter was effective in removal of the thrombosis obstruction experimentally induced in the jugular vein.

Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: flaviovet@usp.br The Brown Capuchin, Cebus apella, has a wide distribution in the northern and southern Brazilian Amazon region and in the Cerrado (savanna). These monkeys are usually submitted to predatory chase, increasing the need for preservation of this wild animal species. An ultrasonographic examination of 10 Brown Capuchins was made in order to describe the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of their abdominal cavity. The urinary bladder revealed its wall thickness with an average of 0.2cm, the topographic situation of which allowed close relation with the wall of uterus and descendent colon. Using caudal abdominal scan, images of aorta, caudal vena cava and right iliac vein were obtained. Liver was accessible for examination by sagittal and cross-section ultrasound, allowing visualization of gallbladder and hepatic vessels. Renal scan allowed accuracy to evidence the echogenicity differences between pelvis, renal sinus, as well as the cortical-medullary relationship. The mean length of the kidneys was 6.24±0.31cm, and no significant differences were observed between left and right kidney length (Student’s t-test and ANOVA). The renal volume obtained was 2.37±0.18cm3. Correlation Coefficients of Pearson between right and left renal length and between right and left renal volume were r = 0.74 and 0.51. Mean thickness for cortical and medullar regions was 0.75±0.11 and 0.39±0.06cm, respectively. Correlation Coefficient of corticomedullar relation between right and left renal was r = 0.19. Examination by ultrasound was considered an efficient, non-invasive, fast and repeatable technique which provides useful data for clinicians and surgeons engaged in wild animal medicine.
