#31 - Seroepidemiological survey of transmissible gastroenteritis virus in reproductive swine herds in the State of Santa Catarina

Abstract in English:

A seroepidemiological suivey utilizitig the micro serum neutralization test for the detection of antibodies to transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) virus was carried out on 5859 swine sera obtained from 59 of the 70 reproductive herds, registered with the Swine Breeding Association of Santa Catarina, distributed in 24 counties within the state. When tested undiluted and in the 1 :2 and 1 :4 dilutions, none of the 403 sera obtained from boars contained antibody, while of the 5451 sow sera tested, 5444 were devoid of antibody, five were toxic for the indicator cells and two had a neutralizing activity up to the 1 :2 dilution. Testing of a second sample obtained from these two pigs revealed that they were free of antibody. The results of this suivey indica te that the reproductive swine herds of the State of Santa Catarina tested in the present study are free of infection with TGE virus.

#32 - Distribution and prevalence of precipitating antibodies to Aujeszky's disease virus in swine herds in the State of Santa Catarina

Abstract in English:

A sero-epidemiological survey utilizing the plate immunodiffusion (ID) test for the detection of antibodies in the serum to Aujeszky's disease vírus (ADV) was performed in swine herds in the State of Santa Catarina. A total of 9303 sera were tested of which 6521 sera were obtained from 67 (89,3%) of 75 existing breeding herds in Santa Catarina distributed in 30 municipalities. Sixty four (1 %) of the latter sera belonging to six herds contained detectable antibodies, with clinical Aujeszky's disease (AD) being diagnosed in two of the herds. Similar ID tests performed on sera obtained from 377 young shoats from five of six Pedigree Testing Stations existing in Santa Catarina and distributed in five municipalities were all negative, while four infected boars were found of 19 tested in an Artificial Insemination (AI) Center. When the sarne testing procedure was applied to 2386 sera from 10 fattening herds located in four municipalities, antibodies were detected in 61 (2.6%) sera, all derived from three herds with history of AD mortality. It is concluded that ADV infection of breeding herds in the State of Santa Catarina is sporadic in nature, nonendemic, very restricted in distribuition and presently under contral, due to the surveillance program recently implemented. The finding of infected animals of european origin in an AI center shows us the weakness of our internatinal sanitary police and the dangers involved in the importation of foreign stock. More work is needed to determine the real prevalence and distribuition of ADV in fattening herds.

#33 - Absolute lymphocyte counts and antibodies against enzootic bovine leukosis virus in dairy herds of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract in English:

Fifty-five dairy cows from two herds located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, were evaluated monthly over a six month period for persistent lymphocytosis (PL) and for the presence of plasma antibody to the major glycoprotein (gp51) of bovine leukosis virus (BLV), as evidence of infection. Absolute lymphocyte counts were superimposed on Bendixen's hematological key for bovine leukosis. Animals were considered to have PL when, during the six month period, three absolute lymphocyte counts were above 7000 per mm3 of blood. In herd A, of 15 absolute lymphocyte counts from three antibody-negative cows, 13 (86.7%) were normal and two (13.3%) suspect. Counts from 17 antibody-positive cows from the sarne herd showed 29 (30.5%) normal, 36 (37.9%) suspect and 30 (31.6%) leukotic. In herd B, of 82 absolute lymphocyte counts from 14 antibody-negative cows, 45 (54.9%) were normal, 23 (28.1%) suspect and 14 (17.0%) leukotic. Counts from 21 antibody-positive cows showed that 53 (45.3%) were normal, 40 (34.2%) were suspect and 24 (20.5%) were leukotic. It is concluded that PL is an unreliable criterion to identify cattle infected with BLV in the subtropical environment, and must not be used in programs aimed at controlling or eradicating BLV from infected herds. However, the hematological keys will continue to be useful in the diagnosis of the clinical disease, that is, the bovine lymphosarcoma. The use of the immunodiffusion test to detect antibody to gp51 in the plasma or serum of infected cattle is a simple and sensitive tool in the control of BLV infection.
