E-mail: greyson@usp.br Acupuncture is an alternative therapy which increasingly acquires credibility in the Western Hemisphere and it is indicated for anemic and immunosuppressed patients, as well as for other diseases. The experiment was performed with 8 adult dogs, 4 females and 4 males. The study consisted to analyze the concentrations of white and red cells evaluated at four treatments: controls (T0), acupuncture (T1), unilateral electroacupuncture (T2), and bilateral electroacupuncture (T3). The acupoints utilized were: 4 large intestine, 11 small intestine and 36 stomachs. All animals experienced all treatments with an interval of 7 days to each treatment. The serum hemograms were verified 20 minutes prior to initiation to treatment (M0), at the end of the treatment (M1), 60 minutes after treatment (M2) and 120 minutes post-treatment (M3). The results revealed that the red series was not significant, but there was only a significant decrease in medium corpuscular concentration (p<0.05) at T1 of M1 as compared to the other treatments; also there was a significant reduction (p<0.05) in the platelet concentration at T1, T2 and T3 as compared to controls. The electro-acupuncture may lead to thrombocytopenia, when stimulating these points, probably by a parasympathetic stimulus.

ABSTRACT.- Costa K.M.F.M., Ahid S.M.M., Vale A.M. & Soto-Blanco B. 2011. [Effects of ivermectin and closantel treatments in parasitic load, in hematological and serum biochemical panel, and Famacha scores in sheep naturally infected with nematodes.] E-mail: kizzymillenn@gmail.com Despite its known resistance, the sheep are subject to endoparasitoses, which are the main limiting factor for its production worldwide, especially in tropical regions. This study aims to evaluate the changes in parasitic load, serum biochemical and hematological panel, and Famacha scores of mixed-bred sheep naturally infected with nematodes and treated with ivermectin and closantel. The study was conducted at July 2010, in a farm in the municipality of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. We selected 41 animals were divided into three groups: group I- control (without treatment), group II- treated with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg), and Group III- treated with closantel (5mg/kg). Stool samples were collected on days 0, 7, 14 and 21 after treatment for quantitative analysis (EPG) and qualitative analysis (stool culture), we used samples from days 0, 14 and 21. The first blood sample was given on day 0, the second and third 24 and 72 hours after the first, respectively the fourth and fifth 7 and 14 days after the first of which analyzed the blood count, serum total protein, albumin and globulins, and albumin/globulins ratio. Famacha scores were determined the degree of each animal at all times of sampling. Closantel administration was effective in the treatment of helminthiasis, especially Haemonchus contortus in evaluated sheep. On the other hand, there was parasite resistance to ivermectin. Famacha data showed negative correlation with packed cell volume, leukocytes, hemoglobin, albumin, total protein, globulin and albumin/globulin ratio. The packed cell volume showed a strong and positive correlation with hemoglobin, albumin and total protein. Treatment with ivermectin and closantel were not responsible for considerable changes in hematological and biochemical parameters evaluated.

ABSTRACT.- Gonçalves R.C., Rocha A.E.A., Silva A.A., Takahira R.K. & Chiacchio S.B. 2011. [Influence of vitamin E on prophylaxis and treatment of moderate and severe bronchopneumonia in calves.] E-mail: andrezamedvet@yahoo.com.br The natural occurrence of bronchopneumonia in calves and the effect of DL-a-tocopherol in the prophylaxis and treatment of this disease is studied. We evaluated 60 male calves, aged up to 10 days, divided into two groups: GSV (group without vitamin) and GCV (group with vitamin). Supplementation with a single dose of 4,500 IU of DL-a-tocopherol administered intramuscularly (IM) was preceded by clinical examination, complete blood count (CBC), determination of serum proteins, globulins, gamaglutamyltransferase and tracheobronchial lavage cytology (D0) to check sanity and homogenization of the groups. The animals were kept two by two in individual 2.40 m2 stalls, where they remained until day 21 (D0 to D21). The animals were examined daily and, in the presence of clinical signs of bronchopneumonia (DX), taken from stalls, evaluated by CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology, and treated with enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg, IM). During the treatment, clinical examination was performed daily by the CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology repeated one week after the end of treatment (DY). In healthy animals, CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology were repeated on the last day of the experiment (D21). No significant difference for the blood variables gamaglutamiltrasfrase (p=0.09), serum protein (p=0.27) and globulin (p=0.10) and the age of animals (p=0.15) were observed in both of groups. Animals in group GSV and GCV took an average of 11 and 12 days for get sick, respectively. However, no statistical difference between was observed in both groups (p=0.68). In 34 (56.66%) animals were diagnosed bronchopneumonia, and 17 of these calves (50%) belonged to group GCV and 17 (50%) to group GSV. With respect to clinical signs, there was no significant difference between groups in any of the times studied. Out of 34 animals which were affected, 73.52% died of the disease, 64.7% were from GCV group and 82.35% were from GSV group. Cytology of tracheobronchial lavage showed no difference between groups in any of the times studied (D0, DX, DY and D21). We conclude that supplementation with vitamin E had no influence in the prophylaxis and Treatment of bronchopneumonia in calves.

Postal 560, Botucatu SP 18618-970, Brazil. E-mail: rodriguesca@fmvz.unesp.br Some problems have been observed in bovine products of the in vitro fertilization technical, among these, the high umbilical diseases casuistry. From this observation, the aim of this work was to accomplish a retrospective study of the correlation between the conception methods and the occurrence of umbilical diseases in bovines and describe the results obtained from the conservative and surgical treatments. For this 44 animals attended at Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Unesp Araçatuba, with age varying from one day to 12 months among the years of 2003 and 2007 were used, twenty seven were from in vitro fertilization (IVF), twelve were from artificial insemination (AI), two were from natural mounts and three were from embryo transfer. The clinical-surgical diagnosis of the animals revealed that all of them presented umbilical disorders, being 22 cases of urachus patent, eight omphalophlebitis, eight umbilical hernia, five omphalitis and one umbilical fibrosis. Before and at the postoperative period was administered in all animals once a day for ten days 3mg/kg of ceftiofur sodium IV. In cases of serious infection or lack of response of the initial antimicrobial therapy a complementary treatment during seven days with 6.6 mg/kg of gentamicin sulfate IV was carried out. The antisepsis of the umbilicus with tincture of iodine to 2% was carried out twice daily in cases treated clinically, with out surgery, while the animals underwent surgery received 1.1mg/kg of flunixin meglumine IV once daily for five consecutive days.Among the 22 animals diagnosed with urachus patent, 10 had urine drainage from the umbilicus and received 2mL of 10% tincture of iodine in the urachus, and 15 was treated with surgical excision, due to formation of diverticulum from the blader to urachus. All animals that were affected with omphalophlebitis and umbilical hernia were submitted to surgery and already of the five cases of omphalitis, three were treated clinically. The analysis of different conception methods correlated to the umbilical diseases occurrence showed evidences that in this retrospective study, the animals from IVF have a higher frequency of the urachus patent (66.7%), and animals designed to AI observed higher frequency of umbilical hernia (58.4%). There is high correlation between the IVF and the occurrence of umbilical diseases in calves and the conservative therapy was effective in less complicated cases and quickly identified, while the surgical treatment showed better results in the cases studied.

#35 - Treatment of dermatophytosis in cats with lufenuron?, 30(2):132-138

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Ramadinha R.R., Reis R.K., Campos S.G., Ribeiro S.S. & Peixoto P.V. 2010. [Treatment of dermatophytosis in cats with lufenuron?] Lufenuron no tratamento da dermatofitose em gatos? Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 30(2):132-138. Departamento de Medicina e Cirurgia Veterinária, Instituto de Veterinária, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. E-mail: regina@vetskin.com.br Due to discrepancies regarding the effectiveness of lufenuron in treating dermato-phytosis caused by Microsporum canis the effect of this drug was checked in 46 cats (30 with cutaneous lesions and 16 asymptomatic carriers) treated in the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The diagnosis was based on Wood’s lamp examination and fungal cultures. Biopsies were only performed in symptomatic animals. The animals were treated with lufenuron (120mg/kg every 21 days), for 4 times. The drug was efficient in 29 of the 30 affected felines and as well as in all of the asymptomatic carriers. The cat that did not respond, had received several dexameta-zone doses prior to the treatment with lufenuron. The drug was given to one animal during the first stages of pregnancy and no abnormalities or neonatal disorders were found in any of the kittens. None of the treated animals showed side effects. Twenty days after the last administration of lufenuron, 45 of the studied animals (98%) had negative fungal culture. The cost of treating dermatophytosis with lufenuron is a little higher than with ketoconazole, but the drug has some advantages regarding its practicability and security. The correct drug prescription and animal’s medication as well as environmental decontamination are very important for the success of the treatment.

ABSTRACT.- Martins I.V.F., Verocai G.G., Correia T.R., Melo R.M.P.S., Pereira M.J.S., Scott F.B. & Grisi L. 2009. Survey on control and management practices of equine helminths infection. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(3):253-257. Departamento de Medicina Veterinária, Centro de Ciências Agrárias, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Cx. Postal 16, Alegre, ES 29500-000, Brazil. E-mail: isabella@cca.ufes.br Twenty-nine stud farms were selected in the Medium Paraíba region of the Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. After an interview with the person responsible for the animals, faecal samples were collected from mares and analyzed via the EPG technique, faecal cultures, Sedimentation-centrifugo-flotation, and modified Ueno and Baermann techniques. The prevalence of helminths in the mares and in the stud farms was calculated. The stocking rates of pasture, change of horse bedding, absence of pasture rotation, absence of technology in the property, and less frequent treatment of the animals were associated with a greater prevalence of helminths, showing that these variables must be considered in equine control programs. The intensity of the parasitism was also associated with the stocking rate of pasture, absence of dunghill, presence of the animals only in paddocks, lack of technology in the property, less frequent treatment of the animals, and absence of the use of rotation regarding the anthelmintic class.

#38 - Acetabular deepening in the treatment of severe canine hip dysplasia, p.163-166

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Iamaguti P., Iamaguti L.S. & Sartor R. 2009. Acetabular deepening in the treatment of severe canine hip dysplasia. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(2):163-166. Departamento de Reprodução Animal e Radiologia Veterinária, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Distrito de Rubião Júnior s/n, Botucatu, SP 18618-000, Brazil. E-mail: raquelsartor@yahoo.com.br A technique to restore acetabular anatomy by deepening the acetabular cavity and reconstructing the femoral head ligament and the joint capsule was tested on nine large breed dogs with severe hip dysplasia and acute subdislocation or dislocation. The technique consisted of two phases. First, all dogs were submitted to bilateral pectinotomy. In a second surgical intervention on the same dogs the acetabulum was approached and deepened, and the femoral head ligament and the joint capsule were reconstructed. In general, within 30 days of the surgery dogs could stand on the operated member to walk. Except for two dogs, all the others recovered pelvic member locomotive ability within 60-90 days after surgery. It is concluded that acetabuloplasty is a good alternative for treatment of severe canine hip dysplasia.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 27(8):352-356. Departamento de Cirurgia da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: cassioaf@usp.br A surgical technique for the treatment of ununited anconeal process in dogs treated by osteotomy and dynamic distraction of the proximal part of the ulna using a linear external skeletal fixator was evaluated. In all cases the osteotomy was distracted 1mm each day after the surgery until desired distraction had been achieved. Eight dogs and 9 joints diagnosed with ununited anconeal process were treated. The success of the procedure was determined by comparing clinical signs of lameness and degree of arthrosis at the time of diagnosis to 6 months after the surgical intervention. Radiographic union occurred in 88.9% of the affected joints between 21 and 42 days after the surgical procedure. Clinically, six elbows were classified as good, two as satisfactory and one as unsatisfactory. Six months after surgery two elbows had no arthrosis, one had Grade 1, two Grade 2 and one Grade 3. It is concluded the combination of ulnar osteotomy and dynamic distraction of the olecranon by a linear external skeletal fixator is a feasible procedure for the treatment of ununited anconeal process in dogs.

Catto J.B., Bianchin I., Torres Junior R.A.A. 2005. [Effects of deworming of cow-calf beef herds in brazilian savannas.] 162, Km 4, Campo Grande, MS 79002-950, Brazil. E-mail: catto@cnpgc.embrapa.br The effect of deworming with ivermectin of cows before calving and of suckling calves on fecal egg counts (EPG) and productive performance of two beef cattle herds in Central Brazil was studied. Four groups of pregnant cows received the following treatments: T1- cows and calves not treated, T2- only calves treated, T3- only cows treated, and T4- cows and calves treated. The calves of T2 and T4 were distributed in the following treatments: A- calves treated at 3 to 5 months of age with long action ivermectin, B- treated with ivermectin, and C- control. For the cows, the deworming did not diminish the EPG during lactation and also did not have significant effect on the conception rate, live weight gain and the body weight of their calves at 3 to 5 months of age. The calves of treatment A gained, from the time of treatment to weaning (84 to 108 days), an average of 4.2kg (P=0.0003) and 7.1kg (P<0.0001) more than those of treatment B and C, respectively. The average difference in live weight gain of 2.9kg between the animals of treatment B and C was not significant. The EPG before treatment was not significantly different from the treatments (P=0.8665); but at weaning, the average EPG of the calves from treatment A was lower than for treatment B (P=0.0004) and C (P<0.0001). There was no significant difference in the mean EPG for the calves from treatment B and C.
