Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Avenida Prof. Doutor Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Butantã, São Paulo, SP 05508-010, Brazil. E-mail: lisboaneto@usp.br The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the racial crossing on scrotum-testicular biometric characteristics of four sheep Santa Ines and four crossbred (Santa Ines x Dorper) submitted to scrotal insulation, following the return of these characteristics to values previously reported. For this, two measurements were made regarding the scrotal circumference (SC), length (L) and testicular width (W) before treatments. The testicular volume (V) was calculated by the formula V=2 [(r²) x π x H]. The pouches were made with double-layer plastic, internally lined with cotton, and fixed around the spermatic funiculus and scrotum with adhesive tape and bandage remaining in this position for seven days. Measurements were made every seven days, totaling 15 measurements throughout the experiment. The data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) to a randomized block design with two blocks, 15 treatments and four replications. The variables analyzed were subjected to Dunnett test at 5% probability, to compare the values obtained before and after insulation. For comparison between the breeds, the variables were submitted to Tukey test at 5% probability. All animals studied suffered significant influence (P<0.05) after scrotal insulation, but Santa Ines returned to the values previously observed in a shorter period than the crossbred. In summary, sheep Santa Ines have a higher resistance than crossbred animals when subjected to thermal stress induced by scrotal insulation.

#2 - Morphology of scrotum and testicle, and spermatic pathways of Metachirus nudicaudatus (Geoffroy, 1803), Didelphidae-Marsupialia, 35(Supl.1):69-83

ABSTRACT.- Costa S.F., Nogueira J.C., Soares B.A., Ambrósio N.A., Chaves A.S., Melo L.Q. & Zangeronimo M.G. 2015. [Morphology of scrotum and testicle, and spermatic pathways of Metachirus nudicaudatus (Geoffroy, 1803), Didelphidae-Marsupialia.] E-mail: sfcosta@dmv.ufla.br Gonads and sperm pathways of five adult male Metachirus nudicaudatus in the reproductive phase were used to describe the morphology of scrotum, testicle, and spermatic tract. M. nudicaudatus has a scrotum pre-penis which contains the testicles permanently. The scrotal skin is not pigmented and has few hairs and glands. The parietal vaginal tunic is slightly pigmented. The testicles are oval and connected to the epididymis by testicular-epididymal pedicle; they are surrounded externally by the testicular capsule and supported by a stroma of connective nature. Interstitial cells are the predominant elements in abundant intertubular tissue. The seminiferous tubules are wide, meandering and surrounded by a fibro-elastic coat, containing myoid cells. The seminiferous epithelium is composed of spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cells interspersed. The seminiferous tubules converge toward the end of the testis capitata, getting coated only support cells, featuring a transition region between the seminiferous tubules and straight tubules, occupied by a type “valve” structure that partially blocks the tubular lumen. Straight tubules together to form a single efferent ductule, which runs a small intra-testicular extent, penetrates through the tunica and the pedicle testis-epididymis. The flexuosa part of the efferent ductule forms a separate lobe in the medial part of the body of the epididymis. The epididymis is enveloped by a capsule and epididymal comprising the epididymal duct, which is quite entangled. The epididymal duct is lined by pseudostratified columnar epithelium with simple principal, basal, apical and “clear halo” cells. The main cells are prevalent and have morphological and histochemical differing characteristics along the duct, enabling to characterize nine different epididymal areas. In the lumen of the seventh area (top of tail) that starts the pairing of sperm. This phenomenon coincides well with morphological change and a larger amount of neutral muco-substances is secreted in that area. Vas deferens has three parts: fair-epididymal, abdominal and funicular part, based on histological and histochemical changes of the epithelium and surrounding components. The vas deferens has no bulb and even crosses the ureter before flowing into the urethra. The spermatic cord contains the vas deferens, testicular artery and veins, lymphatic vessels, nerves and developed cremaster muscle. Its components have structural changes in the proximal, middle and distal region, with a peculiar admirable network.

[Morphology of scrotum and testicle, and spermatic pathways of Metachirus nudicaudatus (Geoffroy, 1803), Didelphidae-Marsupialia.]

E-mail: carvalhomam@uol.com.br The influence of scrotum division on the reproductive parameters in goats was evaluated. Thirty animals were divided into three groups of 10 animals each as follows. Group I: animals with simple scrotum (n=10); Group II: animals with 50% of scrotum bipartite (n=10); and Group III: animals with more than 50% of scrotum bipartite (n=10). It was evaluated: body weight, scrotum perimeter and the testicular length, the seminal characteristic, plasmatic concentration of testosterone, and the libido of the animals with different degrees of scrotum division. Animals with divided scrotum had higher weight and testicular length when compared with animals from the first group that had a higher percentage of spermatic defects. It is possible to conclude that there was a positive influence of scrotal bipartition on the biometric parameters and the sperm quality in goats.

#4 - Influence of the bipartite scrotum on the testicular and scrotal temperatures in goats, 29(10):797-802

Abstract in English:

RESUMO.- Machado Júnior A.A.N., Miglino M.A., Menezes D.J.A., Assis Neto A.C., Leiser R., Silva R.A.B. & Carvalho M.A.M. 2009. Influence of the bipartite scrotum on the testicular and scrotal temperatures in goats.

E-mail: machadojunior2@yahoo.com.br The influence of the scrotal bipartition and of the year period on the scrotal-testicular thermal regulation was evaluated in male goats raised in Piaui State, Brazil. Eighteen male goats at mating age were accomplished in this study and arranged into three Groups (6 animals each) obeying the classification as goats presenting no scrotal bipartition (Group I), goats showing scrotal bipartition at 50% of the testicular length (Group II), and goats with more than 50% of scrotal bipartition (Group III). The scrotal, testicular and spermatic funiculi temperatures were evaluated invasively with the aid of a digital thermometer and non-invasive with a pyrometer in the proximal, medial and distal portion. The data were acquired during the dry (October-November) and rainy (February-March) period of the year, measured in two shifts: morning (6h00-7h00) and afternoon (14h00-15h00). The results were submitted to variance analysis (ANOVA) following the SNK test for average comparison (p<0.05). The year period interfered on the scrotal-testicular thermal regulation, due to increased temperatures of the scrotal, testicular and spermatic funiculi during the dry period in comparison with the rainy period. The bipartition level was also a factor which contributed to the influence of scrotal-testicular temperature regulation, due to lower average scrotal-testicular temperature rates observed during both periods in the goats with higher levels of scrotal bipartition (>50%). It is possible to conclude that with the experimental conditions applied on this study, the level of scrotal bipartition and the climatic conditions interfere with the scrotal-testicular thermal regulation in goats.
