ABSTRACT.- Souza F.N., Blagitz M.G., Latorre A.O., Mori C.S., Sucupira M.C.A. & Della Libera A.M.M.P. 2012. Effects of in vitro selenium supplementation on blood and milk neutrophils from dairy cows. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 32(2):174-178. Departamento de Clínica Médica e Patologia, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: nogueirasouza@yahoo.com.br The study was designed to assess the effects of in vitro selenium addition on intracellular hydrogen peroxide production by neutrophils from the milk and blood of dairy cows. Blood from 10 dairy cows and 20 milk samples from five dairy cows were incubated with 0 mg (control) or 10µM of sodium selenite. Then, milk and blood neutrophils were submitted for evaluation of intracellular hydrogen peroxide production by flow cytometry using 2’,7’-dichlorofluorescein diacetate as a probe. The selenium status of the animals was evaluated by determination of the blood glutathione peroxidase activity. The results of the present work showed that in vitro selenium supplementation leads to an enhancement in intracellular hydrogen peroxide production, which indicates an improvement in the bactericidal effects of blood and milk neutrophils even in cows with a selenium-adequate status. Thus, the present study showed that in vitro Se supplementation leads to an enhancement in intracellular hydrogen peroxide production, indicating an improvement in the bactericidal effects of blood and milk neutrophils in cows with Se-adequate status.

ABSTRACT.- Gonçalves R.C., Rocha A.E.A., Silva A.A., Takahira R.K. & Chiacchio S.B. 2011. [Influence of vitamin E on prophylaxis and treatment of moderate and severe bronchopneumonia in calves.] E-mail: andrezamedvet@yahoo.com.br The natural occurrence of bronchopneumonia in calves and the effect of DL-a-tocopherol in the prophylaxis and treatment of this disease is studied. We evaluated 60 male calves, aged up to 10 days, divided into two groups: GSV (group without vitamin) and GCV (group with vitamin). Supplementation with a single dose of 4,500 IU of DL-a-tocopherol administered intramuscularly (IM) was preceded by clinical examination, complete blood count (CBC), determination of serum proteins, globulins, gamaglutamyltransferase and tracheobronchial lavage cytology (D0) to check sanity and homogenization of the groups. The animals were kept two by two in individual 2.40 m2 stalls, where they remained until day 21 (D0 to D21). The animals were examined daily and, in the presence of clinical signs of bronchopneumonia (DX), taken from stalls, evaluated by CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology, and treated with enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg, IM). During the treatment, clinical examination was performed daily by the CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology repeated one week after the end of treatment (DY). In healthy animals, CBC and tracheobronchial lavage cytology were repeated on the last day of the experiment (D21). No significant difference for the blood variables gamaglutamiltrasfrase (p=0.09), serum protein (p=0.27) and globulin (p=0.10) and the age of animals (p=0.15) were observed in both of groups. Animals in group GSV and GCV took an average of 11 and 12 days for get sick, respectively. However, no statistical difference between was observed in both groups (p=0.68). In 34 (56.66%) animals were diagnosed bronchopneumonia, and 17 of these calves (50%) belonged to group GCV and 17 (50%) to group GSV. With respect to clinical signs, there was no significant difference between groups in any of the times studied. Out of 34 animals which were affected, 73.52% died of the disease, 64.7% were from GCV group and 82.35% were from GSV group. Cytology of tracheobronchial lavage showed no difference between groups in any of the times studied (D0, DX, DY and D21). We conclude that supplementation with vitamin E had no influence in the prophylaxis and Treatment of bronchopneumonia in calves.

Abstract in English:

Peixoto P.V., Malafaia P., Barbosa J.D. & Tokarnia C.H. 2005. [Principles of mineral supplementation in ruminants.] Princípios de suplementação mineral em ruminantes. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 25(3):195-200. Depto Nutrição Animal e Pastagem, Instituto de Zootecnia, UFRRJ, Km 47, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. E-mail: pfpeixoto@terra.com.br Although there is solid knowledge on mineral deficiencies and their consequences on health and productivity of cattle in Brazil, paradoxically, those informations, most of the time, are not used by professionals of the agricultural sciences, who persist in stimulating the widespread use of the so-called complete mineral mixtures. The deficiency of many minerals included in these supplements, as iron, chrome, sulfur, and others, do not occur under natural conditions or only in rare and very particular situations. The present paper deals with the misunderstandings and problems related to traditional mineral supplementation and discusses the main aspects of the so-called selective mineral supplementation that is based in supplying exclusively the deficient mineral(s) and these only in necessary amounts. This procedure can result in expressive economy (sometimes up to 700%) when compared with the commercial mineral supplementation usually employed. According to several estimates, mineral supplementation can account for 20 to 30% of the total cost of beef cattle production on tropical pastures. A reversion assay, in which a group of cattle receives the commercial mineral mixture routinely used on the farm, and another group which receives the selective supplement, is the best option for the elucidation of positive or negative effects between the two possibilities of mineral supplementation on a specific farm. Trough this assay, the effects of the two compositions of mineral supplements can be investigated rationally over a sufficient period of time, with no risks and minimal possibilities of economic losses.

Abstract in English:

Malafaia P., Pimentel V.A., Freitas K.P., Coelho C.D., Brito M.F. & Peixoto P.V. 2003. [Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements.] E-mail: malafaia1@ig.com.br Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements were evaluated during 148 days in Seropédica county, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were daily fed with fresh and chopped Andropogon gayanus or Pennisetum purpureum; the concentrate ration was formulated without a mineral mixture and was offered together with the forage of 300 up to 500 g/animal/day. Sixteen goats were divided into two groups of 8 animals each (4 small and 4 larger goats). For one group a commercial mineral mixture was used, and to the other group a selective mineral mixture containing only Na, P and Cu was offered. The animals were weighed every 30 days and the mineral supplement intake was measured monthly. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and the end of the experimental period. There was no difference in daily weight gain when the selective or commercial mixture was given for both groups. The selective mineral supplementation was 2.3 (for the smaller animals) and 3.9 (for larger animals) times more economic than the conventional supplementation with a “complete” mineral mix. The two groups showed recovery of hair quality and had an increase of hair pigmentation around the eyes, which was attributed to the correction of copper deficiency. In the larger animals the intake of both supplements increased the red blood cells counts, and the haematocrit and haemoglobin values. The forage intake was sufficient to meet the Ca and Co needs of the animals, and for P the concentrate intake was sufficient to overcome the demand for this element. The requirement of zinc was supplied through the forage and the concentrate ration. Thus, when an adequate concentrate and a good quality forage is given, only the deficient mineral element(s) should be supplemented. In this specific case only Na and Cu should be given. The result of this experiment confirms the hypothesis that selective mineral supplementation – i.e. supplementation of the mineral element(s) deficient in the diet – was correct and can result in reduction of the cost with the mineral supplementation of a herd.

#25 - Reproduction performance of beef cattle cows given three different types of mineral supplements, 23(3):125-130

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Peixoto P.V., Malafaia P., Miranda L.V., Canella C.F.C., Canella Filho, C.F.C. & Villas Boas F.V. 2003. [Reproduction performance of beef cattle cows given three different types of mineral supplements.] Eficiência reprodutiva de matrizes bovinas de corte submetidas a três diferentes tipos de suplementação mineral. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 23(3):125-130. Depto Nutrição Animal e Pastagem, Inst. Zootecnia, UFRRJ, Km 47, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. E-mail: pvpeixoto@uol.com.br The reproduction performance of about 1,200 beef cows, raised on pasture and given three different mineral supplements, was evaluated during 5 years in Cássia county, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The cows were divided into three groups: For one group (A) a comercial mineral mixture was used in 1997 and 1998; for the second group (B) common salt and dicalcium phosphate 1:1 was offered in 1999; and the third group (C) received only common salt during the sarne year. ln 2000 and 2001, ali the cows received exclusively common salt. There was no decrease in i:eproduction efficiency when only common salt was given; on the contrary, the reproduction performance of the inseminated e pregnant cows, thát was respectively 92.5 and 78.2 % (1997) and 92.2 and 80.5 % (1998), increased to 94.5 and 85.7 % (2000) and 96.7 and 89.7 % (2001). The decrease of reproduction performance of the cattle in 1999 was probably due to the severe drought during this year. The authors emphasize the importance of a selective mineral supplementation, i.e. to supplement cattle with mineral mixtures including only the elements which the animais can not obtain from the pasture. Theselective mineral supplementation requires the assistance of professionals with training and experience in clinics, pathology and nutrition of ruminants. These professionals should be able to accompany and evaluate the nutritional condition of a herd when a selective mineral mixture is used. Selective mineral supplementation could represent a two or threefold economy of the total cost of conventional supplementation with "complete" mineral mixtures. The authors discuss ifthe improvement of the reproduction performance of the cattle used in this fiel d experiment was due to a better management of the herd or to possible antagonism between the minerais.

RESUMO.- Peixoto P.V., Malafaia P., Miranda L.V., Canella C.F.C., Canella Filho, C.F.C. & Villas Boas F.V. 2003. [Reproduction performance of beef cattle cows given three different types of mineral supplements.]

#26 - Morphologicmorphometrical and microradiographical studies on ribs of cattle supplemented with rock phosphate

Abstract in English:

The present study was conducted to evaluate possible bone changes in cattle due to the ingestion of different levels of fluorine from rock phosphate used as a phophorus supplement. The bone material studied were ribs collected from cattle of three experiments where Tapira rock phosphate was used at different levels and during different periods as a partial or sole source of supplementary phosphorus. In the first experiment feedlot cattle ingested during a 6 month period 63 and 128g/day of Tapira rock phosphate containing 1.3% fluorine. In the second experiment cattle maintained in Brachiaria decumbens pastures during 33 months ingested several levels of Tapira rock phosphate in the mineral mixtures. In the third experimente heifers averaging 14 months of age ingested a mineral supplement with Tapira rock phosphate until the 5th lactation period. Careful examination of the rib samples by histological, morphometric and microradiographic techniques revealed no abnormalities which could be related to fluorine ingestion, neither any differences among tretaments regarding the bone structure. These findings support the conclusion that, as far as bone alterations are concemed, Tapira rock phosphate could be used as a source of phosphorus for cattle under the conditions described in the experiments, a practice which would markedly reduce the cost of phosphorus supplementation.

#27 - Effect of copper supplementation and diseases associated with copper deficiency in cattle in southern Brazil

Abstract in English:

Two trials were performed to recognize copper deficiency in cattle in the coastal region of Rio Grande do Sul. Heifers and steers were injected, at 3 months intervals, with a preparation containing 100mg of copper. In one farm, 6 months after the start of the trial, the weight gains (85.1 kg) of 67 heifers supplemented were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the weight gains (80.28 kg) of 68 non supplemented heifers. In another farm in a trial with 2 groups of 57 steers cach, there were no significant weight gain differences between the supplemented and the control group 18 months after the start of the trial. These results suggest a marginal copper deficiency in cattle in the area. In the sarne region, 5 outbreaks of sudden deaths were studied. The mean copper concentration in the livers in 11 cattle that died suddenly was 4.2 ppm - dry basis (d.b.), varying from 1.3 to 8.4 ppm - d.b. These low concentrations indicate that the disease may be associated with a copper deficiency. A disease of calves characterized by flacid paralysis or progressive ataxia at birth was also studied. A myelin deficiency in the spinal cord white matter was observed histologically. Affected calves had low copper concentrations in the liver (7.6 ppm - d.b.) and spinal cord (6.9 and 7.4 ppm - d.b.). The similarity of this congenital hypomielinogenesis with other diseases of the nervous system caused by copper deficiency in cattle and sheep and the low copper concentrations in tissues, suggest that the disease is caused by a copper deficiency.
