E-mail: cahussni@fmvz.unesp.br Jugular thrombophlebitis is a common complication of disease processes associated with repeated venipuncture, injection of irritant solutions, and the use of indwelling catheters, especially with bacterial contamination. Bilateral thrombophlebitis may result in edema of the soft tissues of the head, reduction of athletic performance and even death of the animal. This disease, although common in horses, is not much known regarding its evolution and treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and structural changes of experimentally induced jugular thrombophlebitis in horses, through clinical examination, ultrasound and venography of the thrombus and the vessel, verifying the possibility of thrombus recanalization and compensatory produced blood flow. The jugular thrombophlebitis was induced unilaterally into 5 horses, monitored by clinical (general, regional and local) and ultrassonographycs exams. Venographs were made at pre-induction, induction and every 6 days after induction of thrombophlebitis, in order to observe recanalization of the occlusive thrombus and presence of blood vessels in the drainage allowance. Occurrence of moderate edema was observed in the parotid, masseter and supra orbital regions, and mild edema in the submandibular region. The jugular engorgement of the cranial region of induction persisted throughout the period of evaluation. The caudal portion to the thrombophlebitis showed engorgement with compression on the vein at the thorax entrance since the first day after induction. The ultrasound examinations showed total occlusive thrombus formation of 3 animals, partial recirculating flow in the jugular vein in 2 animals, and collateral blood vessels from the cranial obstruction to the caudal portion. The venography revealed normal linear blood flow in the preoperative and occlusive thrombus with contrast directed filling of the vessels to the compensatory portion caudal to the vein occlusion or cranial to the thrombus in the postoperative moments. After vein resection of the segment containing the thrombus, the cephalic edema was less intense than after the induction of the thrombophlebtits. The ultrassonography and venography post resection showed vascularity increase in this region. It was concluded that there is recanalization with endothelialization and vascular compensation made by pre-existing vessels necessary for drainage.

E-mail: davetpat@ufrgs.br Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is responsible for different syndromes that affect cattle worldwide causing important economic losses. This study analyzed the clinical, pathological, immunohistochemical and viral aspects of persistent infection by BVDV in five animals of a farm located in the county of Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The clinical signs included growth impairment, nasal and ocular discharge and, in two animals, congenital cataract. The main gross lesions observed at the necropsy were enlargement of mesenteric lymph nodes and Peyer’s patches, and in one case, pododermatitis and crusted lesions on nasal planum and periocular region. Microscopic findings were characterized mostly by mononuclear infiltrate in the lamina propria, primarily in the small intestine and lymphoid depletion with histiocytic infiltrate in follicular centers of lymph nodes and Peyer’s patches. Viral antigens were more frequently demonstrated in epidermal keratinocytes, epithelium of hair follicles and dendritic cells of the dermis of the ears and skin, histiocytes and lymphocytes in lymph nodes, thyroid follicular cells, in the cytoplasm of neurons and to a lesser extent, in glial cells in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Viral isolation from blood samples and organs confirmed the presence of non-cytopathic BVDV. Moreover, viral RNA was detected by RT-PCR in serum samples. Phylogenetic analysis of a partial fragment of the5’ non-translated region of the viral genome allowed the classification of the sample as BVDV type 2b. The present study strengthens the need to investigate and to characterize BVD outbreaks and to describe its different clinic-pathological presentations.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Miranda Neto E.G., Silva S.T.G., Mendonça C.L., Drummond A.R.F. & Afonso J.A.B. 2011. [Clinical aspects and ruminal chemistry in goats with lactic acidosis and sodic monensin supplementation.] Postal 152, Garanhuns, PE 55292-901, Brazil. E-mail: eldinemneto@hotmail.com The aim of the present study was to analyze clinical and laboratory findings regarding goats submitted to the incorporation of monensin in their feed and assess its effects on the prevention of experimentally induced ruminal lactic acid. Clinical aspects as well as physiochemical and microbiological characteristics of the ruminal fluid were assessed. Twenty clinically healthy, castrated, male, mixed-breed goats with a mean weight of 30kg were used, in which permanent ruminal cannulae were implanted. Two groups of ten animals were formed: A control group (CG) and a group that received 33mg/kg of monensin (GM) per animal in the diet for 40 days. Ruminal acidosis was induced by administering 10g of sucrose/kg of live weight, prior to the morning meal. Clinical observations and the collection of ruminal fluid were carried out at 4, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48 and 72h post-induction (PI). At 4 hours PI, there were signs of apathy, capricious appetite or anorexia, tachycardia, tachypnea, rumen stasis, abdominal distention and diarrhea of varying severity. The reflux of rumen fluid through the nostrils, signs of colic intestinal and serous bilateral nasal discharge was observed in some animals of the CG, and laminitis in GM. There was an average loss of body weight of 900g in CG (P>0.05) and 1.3kg in GM (P<0.05). There was a significant decrease (P<0.05) rumen pH falls below six; uptime sedimentation and flotation, viability, motility and density of protozoan, as of four hours of induction in GC and four to 24 hours in GM, the number of infusers, at 4 PI, both in CG and GM, which remained until the end of 72 hours, and the values of acetic, propionic and butyric acids in GM. The values of butyric acid in the GC reduced there is not significant difference (P>0.05). The color of the rumen fluid became milky, acid smell and watery consistency. There was a significant increase (P <0.05) the acidity, of the test time reduction of methylene blue, the values of chloride and lactic acid. The dynamics of the fauna and flora has changed, with a predominance of Gram-positive. In some animals there was no full restoration of all variables. The use of monensin did not prevent the onset of the disorder fermentation in animals that received.

#24 - Experimental poisoning by sodium monofluoroacetate in cattle: Clinical and pathological aspects, 30(7):533-540

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Nogueira V.A., França T.N., Peixoto T. C., Caldas S.A., Armién A.G. & Peixoto P.V. 2010. [Experimental poisoning by sodium monofluoroacetate in cattle: Clinical and pathological aspects.] Projeto Sanidade Animal Embrapa/UFRRJ, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. E-mail: vivianmedvet@yahoo.com.br Sodium monofluoroacetate (MF) was identified, by cromatography, in three of the 12 plants that cause sudden death in cattle in Brazil, including Palicourea marcgravii, the most important plant of this group. A special kind of hydropic-vacuolar degeneration (HVD) of the distal convoluted uriniferous tubules was considered typical for the poisoning by some authors. The objective of this study was to verify if the ingestion of MF causes similar clinical signs and lesion in cattle poisoned by plants that cause sudden death. Six cows received orally 0.5 and 1.0mg/kg of M diluted in 50mL of distilled water. Clinically the animals presented tachycardia, engorgement and positive pulse of the jugular vein, abdominal breathing, swaying gait, subtle unbalance, and recumbency with head placed the on the flank. In the agonal phase all the animals in lateral recumbence presented muscular fasciculation, tonic contraction, peddling movements, opisthotonus, nystagmus, and died between 2 and 14 minutes. At postmortem examination, the heart auricles, jugular and pulmonary veins were moderately distended and engorged with blood. Slight to moderate edema of the subserosa was seen around the gall bladder and the duodenum near to the pancreas. At light microscopy, HVD associated with nuclear picnosis of the epithelial cells of the distal convoluted uriniferous tubules was present in all animals. Ultrastructurally, the cell lesion represents formation of cytosolic vacuoles, likely due to accumulation of water. Coagulation necrosis of individual or groups of hepatocytes and slight hepatic congestion secondary to the venous stasis were also observed. Hydropic-vacuolar degeneration has been observed in cases of poisoning by many substances, which cause acute tubular nephrosis, however not restricted to the distal renal tubules and without nuclear picnosis. This study demonstrates that the HVD in the kidney can be caused by MF and, in analogy, the compound should be considered responsible for the death of cattle that ingest toxic plants which cause sudden death in Brazil. Our results can be supportive to studies that will focus on the degradation of MF by rumen bacteria, what might have economic implications, as at least 500.000 cattle die annually by sudden death causing toxic plants in Brazil.

E-mail: mendonca@dmfa.ufrpe.br In order to confirm the susceptibility of goats to the poisoning by Stryphnodendron fissuratum Mart. (Leg. Mimosoideae) and to characterize the clinical disease, the pods of the plant were given orally to each of eight young goats and in fractioned doses to other two. The lowest lethal dose was 10g/kg. The same dose was the lowest that induced disease. Doses of 20g/kg and 40g/kg caused pronounced clinical signs and doses of 5g/kg did not caused signs. Fractioned doses of 5g/kg during four days also caused pronounced signs. In each groups the first signs of poisoning were observed from the first day of experiments and the changes ranged from 4-25 days. The disease was characterized mainly by digestive and nervous disorders. Clinical signs were partial to complete anorexia, dehydration, decrease in ruminal activity up to atonia, tympanism, constant vocalizations, grinding of the teeth pain up on abdominal palpation, apathy, ataxia, depression, dysmetria, head and muscle tremors, weakness, difficulty in rising, sternal or lateral recumbency and death. Some goats presented extense hair loss in the skin of the dorsum; one goat presented liquid and black fetid feces. Other signs included loss of ruminal fluid during rumination, drooling, serous nasal and ocular discharges. Liver and kidney function tests had resulted in slight changes. AST serum levels were slightly increased and creatine phosphokinase levels were highly increased. These changes can associated to the effects of triterpenic saponins contained in the S. fissuratum pods.

#26 - Clinical and pathological aspects in cattle affected by rabies with special reference to the rabies antigen mapping by immunohistochemistry, 29(11):899-904

Bento Gonçalves 9090, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. E-mail: davetpat@ufrgs.br This retrospective study included clinical and pathological findings from 15 cattle affected by rabies. Thirteen of the 15 cases were confirmed by direct immunofluorescence. Cattle between 4 months and 8 years of age were affected. Clinical course ranged from 3 to 7 days. Paralytical form was the most common clinical picture and included incoordination, paresis, and paralysis of the pelvic members, besides recumbence, paddling, and death. The main histopathological findings were lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis associated with characteristic Negri bodies in 86.6% of the cases. All cases showed anti-rabies immunostaining, which were most prominent in the brainstem including medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain, besides trigeminal ganglion. Positive labeling was present within axons, dendrites, and perikarya of neurons as aggregates of granules or round formations associated with varying numbers of inclusion bodies. Immunostaining was also observed in the Purkinje neurons and their processes in the molecular layer, in the neurons of of the brainstem, and deep layer of the telencephalic cortex. Immunohistochemistry may be an important auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of rabies, especially in circumstances in which refrigeration cannot be adequately maintained, and in cases characterized by nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis with absence of inclusion bodies.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Gabriel A.L., Kommers G.D., Masuda E.K, Fighera R.A., Piazer J.V.M., Barros C.S.L., Martins T.B. & Rosa F.B. 2009. [Clinical and hematological aspects and urinary bladder lesions in chronic spontaneous poisoning by Pteridium aquilinum in cattle.] E-mail: glaukommers@yahoo.com Spontaneous cases of chronic poisoning by Pteridium aquilinum in cattle were studied. The clinical forms of the disease were squamous cell carcinoma (SCCs) of the upper digestive tract (UDT) and bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH). The cases were from the midland Region of the Midwest of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, and were submitted to the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Clinical signs and blood work were evaluated at terminal phase of disease. Cattle with UDT SCCs had progressive weigth loss, ruminal atony, cough, dysphagia, bloating, and regurgitation. In cattle with BEH, hematuria was observed in all cases, followed by progressive weight loss. Non-regenerative anemia was detected in 33.33% of the cattle with UDT SCCs form and in 66.66% of the cattle with BEH form. Changes in white blood count occurred in some cases but drop in lymphocyte numbers was uncommon in both forms of disease. For the morphological study, urinary bladders from 46 cattle with UDT SCCs and 11 cattle with BEH were analyzed. Grossly, 16/46 bladders from the UDT SCCs form had gross lesions (red or pale vesical nodules, hemorrhages, and papilomas; red urine was detected at necropsy of only three cases). In BEH form, the bladder had nodules, large neoplastic masses, red urine, papilomas, and hemorrhages. Pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis were seen in a few cases. Microscopically, in the UDT SCCs form, 44/46 (95.65%) bladders had 22 different types of morphological changes, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/22) and non-neoplastic lesions (17/22); the latter were subdivided in non-neoplastic epithelial changes (6/17), general changes of the lamina propria (6/17), and inflammatory changes (5/17). The bladder changes in BEH form were of 19 different types, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/19) and non-neoplastic lesions (14/19), which were subdivided in non-neoplastic epitelial changes (9/14), general changes of the lamina propria (3/14), and inflammatory changes (2/14). In BEH, mesenchymal neoplasms were more observed than epithelial ones, and most of them were malignant. Immunohistochemistry was utilized to characterize the histogenesis of poorly differentiated neoplasms. In conclusion, the morphological study demonstrated that urinary bladder lesions identical to the those seen in cattle with BEH, are very often present in cattle with the UDT SCCs form.

#29 - Aspectos clinicos e patológicos do envenenamento crotálico experimental em bovinos, p.261-270

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Graça F.A.S., Peixoto P.V., Coelho C.D., Caldas S.A. & Tokarnia C.H. 2008. [Clinical and pathological aspects of experimental Crotalus poisoning in cattle.] Aspectos clinicos e patológicos do envenenamento crotálico experimental em bovinos. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 28(6):261-270. Projeto Sanidade Animal Embrapa/UFRRJ, Seropédica, RJ 23890-000, Brazil. E-mail: flaviograca@uol.com.br Crotalus poisoning was experimentally reproduced by subcutaneous inoculation of Crotalus durissus terrificus (South American rattlesnake) venom into 10 clinically healthy mixed bred 12 to 36-month-old cattle, weighing 125 to 449 kg. Two animals were used as controls. The animal that received a dose of 0.03mg/kg body weight died 7h40min after inoculation. A 0.015mg/kg dose provoked death in 4 out of 7 young oxen. Two animals given 0.0075mg/kg became slightly sick and recovered. Onset of symptoms occurred from 1h30min to 13h45min after inoculation. The clinical course varied from 5h25min to 45h for animals that died, and from 33h15min to 17 days for animals that recovered. The main nervous signs observed were diminished response to external stimuli, hypotonic reflexes, dragging of the hooves, apathy, difficulties in moving around obstacles, ocular globe paralysis, lateral and sternal decubitus, and tongue paralysis. Adipsia and sometimes petechiae in the conjunctival and vaginal mucosa were observed. A slight to moderate increase in bleeding time was noted in 6 animals, and a moderate increase in partial thromboplastin time was found in 7 others. Moderate leukocytosis with neutrophilia, relative lymphopenia, eosinopenia, and monocytosis was found. There was a significant increase in creatine kinase serum levels of a ten-fold order. No significant alterations were revealed by urinalysis. Necropsy revealed minimal edema at the inoculation site, few petechiae and equimoses in the epicardium, omentum, biliary vesicle and bladder mucosa of some animals. Histopathological examination revealed necrosis (hyalinization) of groups or isolated myocytes in different muscles examined, both near and far from the inoculation site, in all animals. The diagnosis of Crotalus poisoning and its differentiation from diseases causing paralysis and muscular necrosis in cattle in Brazil are discussed.

[Clinical, epidemiological and pathological signs of natural infection in cattle by Trypanosoma vivax in Paraíba, Brazil.] E-mail: jaelsbatista@hotmail.com Two outbreaks of trypanosomiasis by Trypanosoma vivax, reported in cattle, occurred on two farms located in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. The epidemiology, clinical signs and pathology of the disease were studied from May 2005 to November 2006. T. vivax was identified morphologically and by polymerase chain reaction test (PCR). The affected cattle presented anorexia, depression, fever, anemia, weight loss, reduction in milk production, transitory blindness, abortion and some nervous signs as nystagmus, tetany and bruxism. All cattle that presented nervous signs died. Necropsy findings were enlarged lymph and spleen, serous atrophy of the fat depots, proeminence of the splenic white pulp, hydropericardium and pericardial petechiae and ecchymoses on the epicardium. Histologically there was meningoencephalitis. The treatment of the clinical cases with diminazena aceturate was efficient with clearance of the parasite from the blood or disappearance of clinical signs in up to 2 months after the beginning of the outbreak on the two farms studied. The epidemiologic factors favoring the occurrence of the outbreak were the abundance of mechanical vectors, as tabanids and Stomoxys sp., and the introduction into the herd of cattle from farms where the disease occurred. It is suggested that the semiarid of the Brazilian Northeast is an enzootic instability region for trypanosomiasis due to its prolonged periods of drought and high temperatures, constituting during most part of the year an unfavorable environment for the development of vectors.
