Prof. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: andrefranciolli@usp.br The aim of this study was to perform an embryology analysis of South-American hystricomorph rodents (paca, agouti, capybara, and rock cavy) to compare these data with the ones from other rodents and with the human embryologic morphogenesis. We used 8 samples of rodents, 2 embryos for each species, collected during early gestation. The embryos were removed from the pregnant uterus through partial ovarysalpingohysterectomy, followed by fixation in 4% paraformaldehyde solution. For crow-rump measurements, we had as reference the nuchal crest at one extremity and the last sacral vertebra on the opposite side. The embryos examined showed the following morphological characteristics: Division of the branchial arches, the cranial neuropore open in some embryos studied, the cranial curvature developed, and the somites delimited and distinct. The hindlimb and forelimb were in development, and showed “row” form; so we found the cardiac impression and the liver region. In the caudal region we observed the head-flow curve, the optic vesicle with and without pigmentation of the retina, the opening of neural tube in the fourth ventricle region of the brain, the nasal cavity, and the encephalic vesicles formation. We conclude that the embryo development of hystricomorph rodents can be compared with the morphogenesis in rats, guinea pigs, rabbits and humans in the early stages of development, being aware of the particularities for each species, in addition to the implementation of reproductive technology, especially of embryos, what requires knowledge of the pre-implantation stages for the different development phases.

E-mail: gisele.stein@ufrgs.br The hematological profile was determined in three populations of Ctenomys lami that inhabits three different areas nominated as A and B, affected by cattle production, and C, without human impact, all of them in southern Brazil, under the same geologic formation. Sixty two individuals were collected. The packed cell volume (PCV) values, hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell (RBC) count presents statistic significant differences between males and females. PCV and Hb values were lower in comparison with other subterranean rodents, which could be related to the food searching behavior or soil characteristic of the species. Significant statistic differences were found to for Hb, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and lymphocytes between animals belonging to A and C areas. The PCV values were higher for animals from areas A and B, with significance only between A and C. Some of these alterations may suggest a modification on stress levels of the animals inhabiting areas A and B with anthropic alterations, or maybe just an inherited characteristic. Significant statistic differences were found either in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) between A and C areas, and platelets between A and B areas. No Kurloff cells were observed in the blood smear from analyzed individuals. The hematological values founded for Ctenomys lami are an important information for this species, which can be used for future research and management.

E-mail: elemos@ioc.fiocruz.br Hantaviruses are the etiological agents of the Hantavirus Cardio-Pulmonary Syndrome, a serious rodent-borne disease in Brazil. In order to investigate the occurrence of hantavirus infection in wild rodents, a survey was conducted in three different suburban areas of the municipality of Pedreira, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Of the 145 wild animals captured belonging to 12 different species identified by morphology and karyological analysis, 107 were rodents of the following species: Akodon montensis, Bolomys lasiurus, Calomys tener, Oligoryzomys nigripes, Oligoryzomys flavescens, and Myocastor coypus. Blood samples from these rodents were assayed for the presence of antibodies against hantavirus by IgG ELISA using Andes recombinant nucleocapsid antigen. Antibody reactive to Andes virus was found in two different species, O. nigripes and O. flavescens. These results indicate a potential risk for hantavirus transmission to humans in this area, where reservoir rodents are present in peridomestic settings.
