ABSTRACT.- Lima D.C.V., Siqueira D.B., Silva-Junior V.A., Nery L.T.B., Rameh-de-Albuquerque L.C., Souza D.S., Melo C.C.S. & Oliveira E.C.S. 2016. Ectopic testis in coati (Nasua nasua Linnaeus, 1766). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 36(10):999-1004. Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Dom Manoel de Medeiros s/n, Dois Irmãos, Recife, PE 52171-900, Brazil. E-mail: ecso21@uol.com.br This paper reports a case of unilateral extracorporeal ectopic testes in a captive coati (Nasua nasua) in the State Park of Dois Irmãos Zoo, Recife/PE, Brazil. The testicle was located in the subcutaneous tissue of the inguinal region not adhered to the surrounding tissues. After bilateral orchiectomy, both testes were measured, fixed with 10% formalin buffered and embedded in paraffin for histopathological evaluation. The left testis measured 1.2 cm width by 1.7cm length, and the right one measured 1.5 cm width by 2.0 cm length. The ectopic testes had seminiferous epithelium without post-meiotic germ cell lines. The non-ectopic testis had several changes in the seminiferous epithelium that indicated degeneration. In both epididymis, the lumen did not contain sperm and the major epithelial structural alterations were more distinct in the epididymis associated to the ectopic testicle. In conclusion, the ectopic testis and epididymis had lesions compatible with testicular exposition to body temperature. Non-ectopic epididymis and testis had minor lesions but could be related to the infertility of the coati.

Ectopic testis in coati (Nasua nasua Linnaeus, 1766).[Testículo ectópico em quati (Nasua nasua Linnaeus, 1766).]

E-mail: luceliabio@yahoo.com.br The objective was an anatomical description of the skeleton of Melanosuchus niger, in order to contribute with evolutionary information about the species. Three adult specimens of M. niger with an average length of 2.40m were used, originating from the biologic collection of Lapas-UFU. In the forelimb, the scapula is bigger than the coracoid. Regarding the hindlimbs, the pubic does not participate in the formation of the acetabulum; the contact with the ilium is made by ligaments, and its articulation with the rump allows dorsal-ventral movements. Regarding the forelimbs, the humerus is a stylopodium element, and the ulna and radius a zeugopodium element. The carpus exibits the ulnar-radial+intermedium fusion, fusion of the distal carpals 3+4+5, and the pisiform. It has five metacarpals, numbered lateromedially as metacarpal 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The phalangeal formula is 2:3:4:3:2. Regarding the pelvic limbs, the stylopodium is formed by the femur, and the zeugopodium by tibia and fibula. In tarsus has four bones: fusion of the intermedium+centrale, fibulare, distal tarsal 3, and distal tarsal 4. It has four long metatarsals I, II, III and IV, with metatarsal II and III being relatively longer than the others. Metatarsal V is a very small bone; the feet have the phalangeal formula 2:3:4:4. At the skull, the nasal opening is only the palatine bones, vomer, pterygoid, premaxilla and maxilla forming the bone structure of the secondary palate; the parietal bone is the only element on the cranial roof. In the pos- axial skeleton ist distinct pairs of ribs which articulate with the cervical, dorsal, lumbar, sacral and caudal vertebrae. The gastralia consists of seven rows of fine bone located between the pubic bone and caudal part of the sternum.

Department of Animal Morphology and Hunting, Faculty of Animal Breeding and Biology, University of Science and Technology, Bernardyńska 6/8, 85-029, Bydgoszcz, Poland. E-mail: krzysztof.stacewicz@o2.pl The study of the vascularization of the cerebrum in silver fox was performed on 80 cerebral hemispheres. It was found that the middle cerebral artery is the strongest vessel supplying blood to the cerebrum. The artery gets divided into ten permanent branches. Two olfactory arteries supply the region of the cerebrum located on the border between the old and the new cortex. The other eight supply the region of the new cortex. The frontal, parietal and temporal branches descended independently from the main trunk of the middle cerebral artery or formed a common trunk. Common trunks for respective groups of branches have been described as the anterior, superior and posterior middle cerebral artery. The alterior olfactory artery in 5% of cases and posterior olfactory artery in 2.5% of cases were independent branches of the middle cerebral artery extending from the rostral cerebral artery.

E-mail: marceloabidu@gmail.com The mesenteric arteries of birds are important for the irrigation of the digestive tract and are associated with weight gain and food conversion. This study aimed to describe the origins, skeletopy, measures and main branches of cranial and caudal mesenteric arteries in ostriches. Forty-one cadavers of ostrich chicks, 23 males and 18 females, obtained from a farmer after natural death. The cadavers were fixed with 10% formaldehyde solution and their vascular system was filled with colored Petrolatex® S-65. The cranial and caudal mesenteric arteries and its proximal branches were dissected in situ and measured with a digital caliper. The mesenteric artery had an average length of 3.68cm±1.04 and emerged from the descending aorta at the level of the eighth thoracic vertebra in most cases; it branched into jejunal and ileocecal arteries. The jejunal artery sent a mean of 14 (14.04±2.08) branches to the jejunum. The ileocecal artery sent a rectal branch and another branch that irrigated ileum, cecum and rectum. In a male specimen the ileocecal artery was originated from the celiac artery. The caudal mesenteric artery emerged in the terminal portion of the descending aorta predominantly at the level of the 4th and 6th sacrocaudal vertebrae. Near the caudal end of the kidney it issued the cranial and caudal branches. The first irrigated the rectum and anastomosed with the rectal branch of the cranial mesenteric artery; the second irrigated the final part of the rectum, cloaca and cloacal bursa. There was no significant difference (p<0.05) between measurements, skeletopy and number of branches of the arteries between genders.

E-mail: fernanda_fmos@hotmail.com This study describes the development of the central nervous system in guinea pigs from 12th day post conception (dpc) until birth. Totally, 41 embryos and fetuses were analyzed macroscopically and by means of light and electron microscopy. The neural tube closure was observed at day 14 and the development of the spinal cord and differentiation of the primitive central nervous system vesicles was on 20th dpc. Histologically, undifferentiated brain tissue was observed as a mass of mesenchymal tissue between 18th and 20th dpc, and at 25th dpc the tissue within the medullary canal had higher density. On day 30 the brain tissue was differentiated on day 30 and the spinal cord filling throughout the spinal canal, period from which it was possible to observe cerebral and cerebellar stratums. At day 45 intumescences were visualized and cerebral hemispheres were divided, with a clear division between white and gray matter in brain and cerebellum. Median sulcus of the dorsal spinal cord and the cauda equina were only evident on day 50. There were no significant structural differences in fetuses of 50 and 60 dpc, and animals at term were all lissencephalic. In conclusion, morphological studies of the nervous system in guinea pig can provide important information for clinical studies in humans, due to its high degree of neurological maturity in relation to its short gestation period, what can provide a good tool for neurological studies.

E-mail: vetlima@uol.com.br Crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) belongs to the Canidae family distributed in South America. Due to literary scarcity regarding the morphology of this species, we objectifiked to collaborate with description of the anatomy of the aortic arch and its collateral branches. We studied four foxes, 2 males and 2 females, from Mina Bauxita, Paragominas, Pará, Brazil/Terra Ltda, under authorization of SEMA-PA nº 455/2009, that died of natural causes. The arterial system was filled with red latex and fixation with 10% formaldehyde solution. The aortic arch of Cerdocyon thous showed that in its origin are two vessels, brachiocephalic trunk and left subclavian artery. From brachiocephalic trunk originates the bicarotid trunk, bifurcated into left and right carotid common arteries, and right subclavian artery. The subclavian arteries originates the costocervical trunk, vertebral artery, internal thoracic artery, superficial cervical artery, to reach the axillary space, and passes to be called axillary artery on both sides. We conclude that the aortic arch of Cerdocyon thous is similar to the one in other domestic animals regarding the number of ramificastions at its origin.

E-mail: fcury@usp.br The formalization is the main form of body and anatomic conservation, mainly due to its low cost. The technique is based on the use of formaldehyde (5-20%) as fixative and preservative. However there are several negative factors on their use, unpleasant smell, browning, weight gain and stiffness of parts and serious environmental problems if disposed of incorrectly, and is a product classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as highly carcinogenic. There are several options to replace formaldehyde and glicerinação is one of them, whose which will be treated in this work. Glycerin dehydrates the cell and acts as antifungal and antibacterial, and has many advantages compared to formaldehyde. But its cost is still high and this explains their limited use in the anatomy lab. This work aims to show the advantages of using glycerin in relation to formaldehyde and propose a possible replacement of this carcinogen to preserve the health of students, staff and teachers within the laboratory, and allows a more pleasant environment for learning.

E-mail: priscillarqr@yahoo.com.br Locomotion reveals the displacement and behavior manner of the species in their daily needs. According to different needs of the several species, different locomotor patterns are adopted. The shapes and attachment points of muscles are important determinants of the movements performed and consequently, the locomotion and motion patterns of living beings. It was aimed to associate anatomical, kinesiology and biomechanics aspects of the gluteal region and thigh of the giant anteater to its moving characteristics and locomotor habits. It was used three specimens of Myrmecophaga tridactyla, settled in formaldehyde aqueous solution at 10% and subsequently, dissected using usual techniques in gross anatomy. The morphological characteristics of the gluteal region and thigh that influence the patterns of movement and locomotion of animals, were analyzed and discussed in light of literature. All muscles of the gluteal region and thigh of giant anteater show parallel arrangement of the muscular fibers, being flat or fusiform. These muscles are formed in the joint which the interpotent type biolever act. These morphological characteristics indicate a greater predominance of amplitude and movement speed at the expense of strength. On the other hand, features such as osteometric index and the observation of giant anteater motion indicate the opposite, what reflects this animal lack of expertise in locomotor habits and shows the need of future realization of more detailed studies in this subject.

Movement anatomy of the gluteal region and thigh of the giant anteater Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Myrmecophagidae: Pilosa). Laboratory for Teaching and Research on Wild Animals (LAPAS), Federal University of Uberlândia, Rua Piauí s/n, Umuarama, Uberlândia, MG 38405-317, Brazil.
