E-mail: ceambrosio@usp.br Fifteen papillae from female water buffaloes and one bovine female were obtained in a slaughter house for this study, which consisted in morphologic and biometrical analyses, histology and histometric and mesoscopical analyses. The means were: right cranial papilla (RCP) 20.95g; right caudal papilla (RCaP) 21.49g; left cranial papilla (LCP) 23.52g; and left caudal papilla (LCaP) 21.35g. Papillary duct average length, numbers of folds and papillary cisterns length were, respectively: 0.67/5,5 e 2.17cm for RCP; 0.62/6.0 e 2.26cm for RCaP; and for the left antimere: RCP: 0.71/6.0 e 2.26cm and for RCaP: 0.74/5.7 e 2.57cm. Pearson’s analysis revealed negative correlation between body weight and mammary glandular weight. Sampling of proximal, middle and distal area was taken and fixed into a 10% formaldehyde solution, followed by mesoscopical investigation through 10, 20 and 40µm thickness cuts stained by Azan, F3BA Picrosirus and Weigert-Van Gieson techniques. Histological and morphometric analyses were applied on 5µm thick samples and showed that the muscular layer was disposed into two arrangements, internal circular and external longitudinal with a bi-stratified cuboidal epithelium. A well developed muscular layer were related to the middle portion revealing thickness of 22.90mm with a great amount of connective tissue (7.10mm).

#62 - Abortus by Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger in cattle in southern Brazil, 23(2):82-86

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Corbellini L.G., Pescador C.A., Frantz F.J., Lima M., Ferreiro L. & Driemeier D. 2003. [Abortus by Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger in cattle in southern Brazil.] E-mail:davetpat@vortex.ufrgs.br Mycotic infection has worldwide distribution and may cause placentitis and abortion in almost ali domestic animais. From September 2001 through November 2002 specimens from 147 aborted bovine fetuses along with 34 placentas were submitted to the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, to investigate infectious causes of abortion in southern Brazil. Mycotic abortion was diagnosed in five cases (3.4%). Aspergilfus fumigatus was isolated from four cases and A. niger from one. Virological, bacteriological and direct immunofluorescent antibody tests for Leptospira sp were negative in those cases where Aspergillus sp was cultured. The gestational age of those fetuses ranged from 5 to 8 months. Macroscopic lesions were observed in four cases. One had several Nodular lesions disseminated throughout the liver, two had skin lesions characterized by white-grayish round plaques mostly on the head and neck, and thickened cotyledons in two placentas sent with those fetuses. The histological lesions were observed in the liver, lungs and placenta and consisted primary of necrotizing hepatitis, suppurative bronchopneumonia of varying degrees and necrotizing placentitis. With the use of Grocott's methenamine-silver staining, septate hyphae could be observed in three cases, surrounding necrotizing lesions in the tiver of one fetus and in two placentas. In two cases hyphae were observed in placenta) tissues and not in fetal tissues, indicating the importance of the placenta in diagnosing mycotic abortion in cattle.

#63 - Glanders in horses and mules of the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, Brazil, 20(4):155-159

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Mota R.A., Brito M.F., Castro F.J.C. & Massa M. 2000. [Glanders in horses and mules of the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, Brazil.] Depto Med. Vet., Univ. Fed. Rural de Pernambuco, Rua Dom Manoel de Medeiros s/nº, Dois Irmãos, Recife, PE 52171- 900, Brazil. Based on clinical-pathological, epidemiological and serological aspects, as well as by the isolation of Burkholderia mallei, foci of glanders were diagnosed in equids of the "Zona da Mata" in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas. Clinically there was hyperthermia, noisy respiration, loss of appetite, progressive loss of weight leading to emaciation, nasal congestion and muco-purulent discharge, erosions, ulcers and scars of the nasal mucosa. The size of submaxillary and cervical lymphonodes was increased, which contained abscesses and fistules exudating purulent material. In the skin, accompanying the lymph vessels, there were firm nodules and abscesses which in chronic cases fistulated and ulcerated Ieaving stellar scars. The histopathology of the nodules at various sites, from the horses as well as from the guineapigs used for the Strauss test, showed granulomatous lesions and pyogranulomas. The results of this study showed that glanders in the region was emerging and further sero-epidemiological studies are urgent for the eradication of the disease.

RESUMO.- Mota R.A., Brito M.F., Castro F.J.C. & Massa M. 2000. [Glanders in horses and mules of the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, Brazil.]

#64 - Prevalence of the infection by the Bovine Leukosis Virus in Jersey dairy cattle, raised in the State of São Paulo

Abstract in English:

The prevalence of infections with Bovine Leukosis Virus in cattle of the Jersey breed, raised in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, was determined with glycoprotein antigen (gp 51) in agar-gel immunodiffusion tests. The over-all prevalence of infections was 49,2% (360/709). The sample arranged according to different age groups showed a higher prevalence in older animals. The values obtained were the following: up to 3 months 45,5% (36/77), 3-6 months 9,8% (6/61), 6-12 months 17.1% (13/76), 12-24 months 24.6% (30/122), 24-48 months 47.6% (81/170), 48-72 months 65.9% (89/135) and older than 72 months 86.2% (106/123). The results showed that there exist foci of the infection by the bovine leukosis virus within the 11 studied municipalities. The prevalence of female animals (51.1% - 346/677) was higher than that found in males (9.4% - 3/32).

#65 - Leucogram evaluation of bovine holsteio females naturally infected by the Bovine Leukosis Virus

Abstract in English:

Lymphocytosis caused by Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL) has been known since the beginning of the century. For the clinical diagnosis of EBL "hematologic keys" have been largely used. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the hematologic condition of black and white holstein cows infected by the Bovine Leukosis Virus (BLV) giving special attention to lymphocytic morphology. Blood samples from 423 cows reacting to the Agar Gel Immunodiffusion Test (AGID) and from 374 non reacting cows were collected. No statistical differences in polymorphic nuclear leucocyte counts and monocyte counts between reacting and non reacting cows were found, but the AGID-reacting cows showed higher lymphocyte counts than the non AGID-reacting cows. When the morphology of the lymphocytes was analysed it was found that the monocytic cell counts and the double nucleus lymphocyte counts were higer in AGID-reagent animals.
