Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Dias J.A., Alfieri, A.A., Medici, K.C., Freitas, J.C., Ferreira-Neto J.S. & Müller E.E. 2008. [Risk factors for bovine herpesvirus 1 infection in cattle herds in the West region of Parana State.] Rodovia Celso Garcia Cid 380, Cx. Postal 6001, Londrina, PR 86051-990, Brazil. E-mail: muller@uel.br The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of positive herds and to identify the risk factors for BoHV-1 infection in breeding cattle herds in the Western region of Parana State. The statistic delineation, the serum samples and information regarding the selected farms, were the same employed in the study of bovine brucellosis for Parana State in the context of National Program for Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis. The sampling was performed in two stages. Blood samples were collected from 1930 females aged ³24 months from 295 non vaccinated herds. Serum samples were tested for antibodies against BoHV-1 using an indirect ELISA. The epidemiological questionnaire was applied on all the selected farms and aimed to obtain epidemiological data. Hundred ninety of the 295 herds were positive for BoHV-1, presenting prevalence of positive herds of 64.41% [58.65-69.87%]. The number (³23) of females aged 24 months (OR=2.22; IC: 1.09-4.51), purchased cattle (OR=2.68; IC: 1.48-4.82), use of common grass (OR=5.93; IC: 1.31-26.82), history of abortion in the last 12 months (OR=2.37; IC: 1.09-5.16) and presence of wildlife animals (OR=8.86; IC: 1.11-70.73) were identified as risk factors for BoHV-1 infection in the multivariate logistic regression. These results indicate that BoHV-1 infection is widespread in the studied region and that factors related to the herd characteristic and management are associated with the infection.

#63 - Avaliação hemogasométrica em cães submetidos à pneumonectomia esquerda, p.345-351

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Binoki D.H., Jatene F.B., Fantoni D.T., Stopiglia A.J., Santos A.L.S., Freitas R.R., Simões E.A., Irino E.T., Monteiro R. & Lofiego R. 2007. [Hemogasometric evaluation in dogs submitted to left pneumonectomy.] Avaliação hemogasométrica em cães submetidos à pneumonectomia esquerda. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 27(8):345-351. Departamento de Cirurgia, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: stopa@usp.br It is well known that different diseases of infectious, traumatic or neoplasic origin can occur in the lungs of dogs, and pneumonectomy technique may be an option for the treatment of some of these diseases. The objective was to evaluate hemogasometric parameters, oxygen partial pressure (PaO2), carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaCO2), hydrogen ion concentration (pH) and bicarbonate ion concentration on the pre- and post-operative moments of the left pneumonectomy. Eighteen adult mongrel dogs, males and females, were randomly distributed into two groups with 9 dogs each. In Group A, the left bronchial stump of the dogs was sutured manually with polypropylene 5-0, and, in Group B, the left bronchial stump of the dogs was sutured mechanically with a surgical stapler. The data were collected at 6 moments: Before the pre-anesthetic administration (T0), one hour after the extubation (T1EXT), 48 hours after the surgery (T48h), 7 days after the surgery (T7d), 15 days after the surgery (T15d), and 36 days after the surgery (T36d). The results were statistically analyzed. PaO2 values of Group A on T1EXT (67.00±11.31) were significantly lower in relation to T0 (99.4±18.34), a fact that did not happen in Group B: T1EXT (87.00±8.35) in regard to T0 (87.00±7.55). There was no difference on pH values in dogs of Group A, but in Group B was observed a decrease on T1EXT (7.3644±0.0353) in relation to T0 (7.4189±0.0136), although the animals did not develop acidosis. It was concluded that dogs submitted to left pneumonectomy (sutured manually or sutured mechanically of left bronchial) did not show immediate and mediate acid-basic instability during the study.

E-mail: zampieri@ial.sp.gov.br The immunological reply of a population to an infectious agent can vary between races and handling of this population. Regional research becomes important, in order to know the interrelation between the agent and its host. In this way, the occurrence of immunoglobulins of class G, anti-Babesia bovis and anti-Babesia bigemina in the Nelore (Bos indicus) and Hostein breed (Bos taurus), was investigated in two regions of the State of São Paulo, 300 km distant from each other. For the indirect method of ELISA, 1,161 bovine serum samples were tested. The medium frequencies of antibodies showed that in the two regions exists an enzootic stability for B. bovis in both breeds studied; even so there was a tendency of marginal area for the Nelore breed in one of the regions. Regarding B. bigemina, in both regions exists enzootic stability for the Hostein and enzootic instability for the Nelore breed. Therefore, acute cases of the disease or specific outbreaks by B. bigemina infection in the Nelore breed may occur in these regions.

Abstract in English:

Malafaia P., Pimentel V.A., Freitas K.P., Coelho C.D., Brito M.F. & Peixoto P.V. 2003. [Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements.] E-mail: malafaia1@ig.com.br Daily weight gain, economic, nutritional and clinical aspects of goats receiving two types of mineral supplements were evaluated during 148 days in Seropédica county, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were daily fed with fresh and chopped Andropogon gayanus or Pennisetum purpureum; the concentrate ration was formulated without a mineral mixture and was offered together with the forage of 300 up to 500 g/animal/day. Sixteen goats were divided into two groups of 8 animals each (4 small and 4 larger goats). For one group a commercial mineral mixture was used, and to the other group a selective mineral mixture containing only Na, P and Cu was offered. The animals were weighed every 30 days and the mineral supplement intake was measured monthly. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and the end of the experimental period. There was no difference in daily weight gain when the selective or commercial mixture was given for both groups. The selective mineral supplementation was 2.3 (for the smaller animals) and 3.9 (for larger animals) times more economic than the conventional supplementation with a “complete” mineral mix. The two groups showed recovery of hair quality and had an increase of hair pigmentation around the eyes, which was attributed to the correction of copper deficiency. In the larger animals the intake of both supplements increased the red blood cells counts, and the haematocrit and haemoglobin values. The forage intake was sufficient to meet the Ca and Co needs of the animals, and for P the concentrate intake was sufficient to overcome the demand for this element. The requirement of zinc was supplied through the forage and the concentrate ration. Thus, when an adequate concentrate and a good quality forage is given, only the deficient mineral element(s) should be supplemented. In this specific case only Na and Cu should be given. The result of this experiment confirms the hypothesis that selective mineral supplementation – i.e. supplementation of the mineral element(s) deficient in the diet – was correct and can result in reduction of the cost with the mineral supplementation of a herd.

#66 - Mastitis caused by Mycoplasma bovis in dairy cattle, 21(4):143-145

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Pretto L.G., Müller E.E., Freitas J.C., Mettifogo E., Buzinhani M., Yamaguti M. & Salvador R. 2001. [Mastitis caused by Mycoplasma bovis in dairy cattle] Mastite bovina por Mycoplasma bovis em rebanhos leiteiros. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(4):143-145. Depto Medicina Veterinária Preventiva, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Cx. Postal 6001, Londrina, PR 86051-970, Brazil. In this study 713 cows were examined. The animals were from three dairy farms in northern Paraná and the southwest of the State of São Paulo. From these cows, 137 had mastitis. On the three farms, 8 cows (1-12%) with Mycoplasma bovis mastitis were detected. Four were treated with tylosin and oxytetracyçlin and three with enrofloxacin There was no response to the treatments, and these animals were culled during the lactation period. One cow treated with enrofloxacin almost totally recovered milk production, but elimination of M. bovis continued during the lactation, and there was no bacteriological cure. This cow had a normal milk production in the next lactation period, without elimination of M. bovis. Culling of positive animals, the bacteriological study anel correct application of preventive practices for contagious mastitis controlled the dissemination of M. bovis to other animals.

RESUMO.- Pretto L.G., Müller E.E., Freitas J.C., Mettifogo E., Buzinhani M., Yamaguti M. & Salvador R. 2001. [Mastitis caused by Mycoplasma bovis in dairy cattle] Mastite bovina por Mycoplasma bovis em rebanhos leiteiros. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(4):143-145. Depto Medicina Veterinária Preventiva, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Cx. Postal 6001, Londrina, PR 86051-970, Brazil.

#68 - Prevalence of atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia in farms associated to swine integration systems in the State of Santa Catarina

Abstract in English:

A survey of the occurrence of atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia among finishing pigs at the slaughterhouse was conducted during the winter of 1985. The pigs were of various breeds, of both sexes, ranging in age from five and half to six and half months, originated from 133 herds. The herds were chosen randomly from five different integration systems. From 3,607 nasal conchae examined 52.6% were normal 31.4% were affected by grade 1 (slightly), 11.9% grade 2 (clearly atrophic) and 4.9% grade 3 (strongly atrophic). From 3,588 lungs examined 44.7% were normal and 44.9% showed hepatization of 0 < x < 11.0% (grade 2) of the lung volume, 7.6% with 11.0 ≦ x < 21.0% (grade 3) and 2.9% with x ≧ 21.0% (grade 4). Atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia were diagnosed in 100% of the farms. It was concluded that atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia were disseminated in the finishing pigs herds associated to the integration systems in the State of Santa Catarina.

#69 - Isolation of Chlamydia psittaci from water buffaloes slaughtered for consumption in Belém, Pará

Abstract in English:

A Chlamydia agent was isolated from 14 (70%) samples of organs and carcasses of slaughtered water buffaloes identified as Chlamydia by its morphological and staining characteristics, its pathogenic effect on chicken embryos. It was characterized as Chlamydia psittaci by the direct immunofluorescence test. In the isolation experiment, the serial passages system of inoculation from organs to the yolk sac of embryonated chicken was used, and 3 passages were made for each sample. The identification and characterization of isolates were made by the observation of typical cytoplasmatic inclusions in smears of the yolk sac membrane of embryos after inoculation and impressions of lesioned organs, stained by Giemsa, Macchiavello and Castañeda methods and by the fluorescence antibodies technique. Twenty samples of organs and carcass of water buffaloes that presented inflammation of the serosa in one or more of the lungs, liver and heart were studied. The lung was the organ with greatest number of isolates (8), followed by brain (6), liver (5) and heart (2). A significant correlation between the macroscopic lesions and the positive fluorescence of the agent in the correspondent inoculum was observed in the lung.

#70 - Frequency of atrophic rhinitis in swine slaughtered in Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Gross examination of the nasal structures of 1273 swine of various breeds, of both sexes, ra.hging in age from six to eight months, performed at slaughterhouses in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, showed that 300(23.6%) had turbinate atrophy or necrosis, lesions characteristic ofatrophic rhinitis. Seventy-five of these animals also showed deviation of the nasal septum. Twenty-three (2.4%) of the remaining 973 animals, without atrophic rhinitis, showed nasal septum deviation. A positive correlation (p < 0.01) was shown between the degree of turbina te atrophy and nasal septum deviation, demonstrated by an increase of 15 .9% as the severity oflesions increased. The frequency of atrophy of the turbinate banes varied from 18.0% to 48.9% in the principal swine producing regions of the state.
