E-mail: fassisle@gmail.com Serum and kidney of 75 mixed bred swine (no definite breed) reared in an extensive system and slaughtered in Timon (state of Maranhão) and Teresina (state of Piauí), Brazil, two cities separated from each other by the Parnaiba River, and 75 crossbred swine from a confinement rearing system, sired by Landrace, Large White and/or Duroc, were used in this study. From the 150 analyzed samples for the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), seven were reagents and the serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae (42.86%) was the most frequent. A comparison between both systems to verify a predisposition to Leptospira spp. infection showed that susceptibility was greater in extensively reared animals than in those bred in confinement (c2 test, p<0.05). Inflammatory infiltrates covered an average area larger in the seropositive revealing a significant difference for the seronegative animals (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney U-Test). Morphometric analysis showed Leptospira spp. and antigen labeling in seropositive animals only (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney U-test). Apoptosis in tubular epithelial cells was significantly more evident in the infected animals compared to uninfected. The rearing system and environment conditions are an important factor in the susceptibility of swine to Leptospira spp. infection. An eventual association of leptospira antigen and apoptotic cells suggests a probable mechanism of renal injury at leptospirosis.

Uma comparação entre os dois sistemas para examinar uma predisposição para infecção para Leptospira spp. mostrou que a suscetibilidade foi maior nos animais criados extensivamente do que naqueles criados em confinamento (teste c2, p<0,05). A presença de infiltrado inflamatório foi significantemente maior nos animais soropositivos comparados aos soronegativos (p<0,05, Teste U de Mann-Whitney). A análise morfométrica mostrou Leptospira spp. e o antígeno de leptospira apenas nos animais soropositivos (p<0,05, teste de U de Mann-Whitney). Apoptose em células epiteliais tubulares foi significantemente mais evidente nos animais infectados comparados aos não infectados (p<0,05, Teste U de Mann-Whitney). Uma eventual associação de antígeno de Leptospira e células epiteliais em apoptose sugere um provável mecanismo de lesão renal na leptospirose suína.

[Agglutinating antibody titers induced by commercial vaccines against bovine leptospirosis.] Títulos de anticorpos aglutinantes induzidos por vacinas comerciais contra leptospirose bovina. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(7):575-582. Departamento de Medicina Veterinária Preventiva e Reprodução Animal, Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Via de Acesso Paulo Donato Castellane s/n, Jaboticabal, SP 14884-900, Brazil. The four experimental groups were vaccinated using distinct commercial polyvalent bacterines: A, B, C and D, and a group was the control. Samples were collected at days 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 42, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 120, 150 and 180 from the first injection of the vaccine. The selection of the animals for the experimental groups was done based on a serological screening with 6 antigens of Leptospira sp. constituted by non-reagent animals. The vaccine titers were monitored using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for Canicola, Grippotyphosa, Hardjo, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Pomona and Wolffi serovars. All vaccines used were capable to product agglutinins for the Hardjo and Wolffi serovars observed at 3 days after vaccination, remaining until the 150th day; those serovars induced the highest titres of agglutinins. Vaccine D, in spite of not containing the Wolffi serovar, induced the production of agglutinins to this serovar. Agglutinins to the Canicola serovar were only observed in the animals vaccinated with the D bacterine. Vaccine D induced the highest average titers of antibodies to all tested serovars.

Studies on seroprevalence for leptospiral infection are scarce and restricted to free living capybaras. We report detection of agglutinating antibodies against leptospires in 27% (6/22) of all animals in a slaughterhouse from Rio Grande do Sul. The highest antibody titers predicted Australis as the infecting serogroup due to reactions against a reference strain of serovar Bratislava and a canine local isolate of serovar Australis, characterized as Leptospira noguchii. The data presented in this report highlight that a considerable fraction of capybaras in captivity may behave as reservoir for pathogenic leptospires emphasizing the occupational risk of those who deal with animal farming and slaughter.

#4 - ANTI-Yersinia enterocolitica SEROTYPE 3 AGGLUTININS IN SWINE SERA FROM RIO DE JANEIR0, 17(1):9-11

ABSTRACT.- Lázaro N.S. & Hofer E. 1997.Anti-Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 3 agglutinins in swine sera from Rio de Janeiro.[Aglutininas anti-Yersinia enterocolitica 0:3 em soros de suínos do Rio de Janeiro.] Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 17(1):9-11. Depto Epidemiologia e Saúde Pública, Instituto de Veterinária, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil. The slow serum agglutination test was applied to 119 healthy pigs for the determination of the possible presence of anti-Yersinia enterocolitica 0:3 agglutinins. Of the 63.9% reactive animals (&ge; 1 :20), 8.4% presented positive titers (&ge;1 :80), suggesting the presence of this pathogen among swine and consequently an additional public health problem.

Dos 63,9% animais reagentes (&ge;1:20), 8,4% apresentaram títulos a nível de positivo (&ge;1:80) sugerindo a presença deste patógeno em nossos rebanhos suínos constituindo-se consequentemente em mais um problema de saúde pública.
