#1 - Quantitative study of wild animals received at the Wild Animals Triage Centers (CETAS) in Bahia and identification of trafficking routes

In Brazil, the illegal capture of wild animals is a crime that contributes to the extinction of species, besides causing environmental imbalance and suffering to the animals. Here, we undertook a quantitative survey of animals sent to the “Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres” (CETAS - Wild Animals Triage Centers) from units of Porto Seguro, Salvador, and Vitória da Conquista during 2009-2019. The 19,317, 34,460, and 43,874 specimens were registered in the units of Porto Seguro, Vitória da Conquista, and Salvador, respectively. The distribution of the totals by class included 80,948 (82.90%) birds, 12,007 (12.30%) reptiles, 4,661 (4.77%) mammals, and 35 arachnids (0.03%). The operations that generated registration at the CETAS were most frequently apprehensions (67,974; 69.67%), followed by voluntary surrender (13,367; 13.69%), rescues (12,803; 13.11%), and transfers (2,735; 2.67%). The animals came from 236 municipalities in the state of Bahia, with emphasis on the municipalities of Salvador, Vitória da Conquista, Feira de Santana, Lençóis, Jequié, and Paulo Afonso. The evaluation of the quantitative seizures by municipalities indicates that the BR-116 is one of the most representative routes for the illegal traffic of wild animals in the state of Bahia and the country.

No Brasil a captura ilegal de animais silvestres é crime e contribui para a extinção das espécies, além de causar desequilíbrios ambientais e sofrimentos aos animais. Este trabalho apresenta quantitativos de animais recebidos e/ou armazenados nos Centros de Triagem de Animais Silvestres (CETAS) do estado da Bahia, no período de 2009-2019. Os totais de 19.317, 34.460 e 43.874 espécimes foram registrados nas unidades de Porto Seguro, Vitória da Conquista e Salvador, respectivamente. A distribuição dos totais por classe incluiu 80.948 (82,90%) aves, 12.007 (12,30%) répteis, 4.661 (4,77%) mamíferos e 35 aracnídeos. Quanto à natureza da operação que gerou o registro nos CETAS, as mais frequentes foram apreensão (67.974; 69,67%), entrega voluntária (13.367; 13,69%), resgate (12.803; 13,11%) e transferência (2.735; 2,67%). Os animais foram apreendidos em 236 municípios do estado da Bahia, com destaque para Salvador, Vitória da Conquista, Feira de Santana, Lençóis, Jequié e Paulo Afonso. A avaliação dos quantitativos das apreensões por municípios indica que a BR-116 é uma das rotas de escoamento mais representativa do tráfico ilegal de animais silvestres, no estado da Bahia e no país.

E-mail: ubiratansilva@gmail.com One of the most limiting factors affecting the larval rearing of Ucides cordatus in the laboratory is a period of high mortality, which usually occurs late in the course of the larviculture during the metamorphosis from the zoeal to the megalopal phase. The objective of the present research was to analyze the post-embryonic development of U. cordatus on an individual basis and, in particular, to search for patterns linking disturbances in the molting process to the high larval death rates observed in massive larvicultures. A total of 50 larvae were individually reared from hatching to metamorphosis into the megalopal phase under controlled conditions, fed a combination of microalgae and rotifers. The survivorship rate was 70% until zoea V. The 35 surviving zoea V larvae followed two different pathways. Eleven underwent metamorphosis directly to megalopa, eighteen molted to zoea VI and six died as zoea V. In the last molting event, only two zoea VI larvae reached the megalopal stage, while the remaining sixteen died. In further observation under microscope, 13 of the dead zoea VI showed characteristics of the pre-molt stage and pereiopods disproportionably large in relation to the carapace. The observed pattern resembles the Molt Death Syndrome (MDS) described for other decapod species, in which larvae die in the late pre-molt phase of the molting cycle. We suggest that U. cordatus larvae develop disturbances in the molting process similar to the MDS described for other species and that these disturbances are related to a more complex pathway involving the emergence of larval stage zoea VI.

E-mail: ubiratansilva@gmail.com Um dos fatores mais limitantes que afetam o cultivo larval de Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) em laboratório é um período de alta mortalidade, o qual usualmente ocorre no fim do curso da larvicultura durante a metamorfose da fase de zoea para a de megalopa. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi analisar o desenvolvimento pósembrionário de U. cordatus em uma base individual e, em particular, procurar por padrões ligando distúrbios no processo de muda com as altas taxas de mortalidade observadas nas larviculturas massivas. Um total de 50 larvas foram cultivadas individualmente da eclosão até a fase de megalopa em condições controladas, alimentadas com uma combinação de microalgas e rotíferos. A taxa de sobrevivência foi de 70% até zoea V. As 35 larvas zoea V sobreviventes seguiram dois diferentes caminhos. Onze realizaram a metamorfose diretamente para megalopa, dezoito mudaram para zoea VI e seis morreram como zoea V. No último evento de muda, apenas duas larvas zoea VI atingiram a fase de megalopa, enquanto as dezesseis restantes morreram. Em investigação posterior sob microscópio, 13 das zoea VI mortas mostravam características de estágio de prémuda e pereiópodes desproporcionalmente grandes em relação à carapaça. O padrão observado lembra a Síndrome da Morte na Muda (MDS) descrita para outras espécies de decápodes, na qual larvas morrem no fim da fase de prémuda do ciclo de mudas. Nós sugerimos que larvas de U. cordatus desenvolvem distúrbios no processo de muda similares à MDS descrita para outras espécies e que esses distúrbios são relacionados a um caminho mais complexo que envolve a ocorrência do estágio larval zoea VI.

Following replication in the nasal mucosa, viral invasion of the brain is thought to occur mainly by the olfactory pathway. To address the role of this pathway in the pathogenesis of neurological infection in a laboratory model, 30 days old rabbits had the main olfactory bulbs (MOBs) surgically removed and were subsequently inoculated intranasally (IN) or conjunctivally (IC) with a highly neurovirulent BoHV-5 strain (SV-507). Following IN inoculation, 10 out of 10 (100 %) control rabbits developed neurological disease. The clinical onset ranged from day 5 to 10 post-inoculation (pi, average 7.5 days); nine being euthanized in extremis and one recovering after a mild clinical course. In contrast, only one rabbit (9.1 %) of the group lacking the MOBs (n=11) developed neurological disease (onset at day 17 pi). Dexamethasone administration to the survivors (n=10) at day 50pi was followed by virus shedding in nasal and/or ocular secretions by 8 animals, demonstrating that the virus was able to reach the trigeminal ganglia (TG) during acute infection. These results demonstrate that the olfactory route provides the main, yet not the sole access to the brain of rabbits following IN inoculation. To address the role of a second pathway, groups of control (n=12) or MOB-lacking rabbits (n=12) were inoculated into the conjunctival sac (IC), following which the virus would be expected to use the ophtalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve to reach the brain. Ten control rabbits (83.3 %) developed neurological disease upon IC inoculation (onset 15.3 days [11 to 20]). Previous ablation of the MOBs did not affect the frequency and course of neurological disease: ten out of 12 rabbits (83.3 %) lacking the MOBs developed neurological disease (onset 9 to 15 dpi, average: 12.7 days) upon IC inoculation. These results demonstrate that both IN and IC routes may operate in the transport of BoHV-5 to the brain of experimentally infected rabbits, depending on the route of inoculation. IN inoculation results in a fast and efficient transport by the olfactory pathway, the trigeminal route providing an alternative, much slower and less efficient transport; IC inoculation results in efficient viral transport by the trigeminal route, yet with a delayed kinetics comparing to the transport provided by the olfactory pathway.
