RESUMO.- Monteiro C.M.R., Perri S.H.V., Roberto Gameiro de Carvalho R.G. & Koivisto M.B. 2009. [Histology and morphometry in uterus horns of nulliparous bitches, multiparous ones and bitches treated with contraceptives.]

E-mail: monteiro@fmva.unesp.br Histological and morphometric data were obtained from uterus of nulliparous bitches (n=6), multiparous ones (n=6), and bitches treated with contraceptive (n=6). Six samples of uterine horns, cut in average for each group. Measurements of the thickness of the uterine wall, total endometrium, total myometrium, internal myometrium, external myometrium, vascular layer and diameter of normal endometrial glands were not statistically significant between the treated and multiparous bitches, except for the height of the epithelium of normal glands. Measurements of thickness of the uterine wall, total endometrium, total myometrium, myometrium internal diameter and height of the glands of normal glandular epithelium were significant, comparing nulliparous with multiparous bitches and/or treated, except for thickness of the myometrium and vascular outer layer. It can be concluded that (1) the use of contraceptives and successive pregnancies affected uterine structures in its full, (2) the vascular layer and external myometrium were the regions with less variation, (3) morphological changes occurred with the same intensity in the total endometrium and myometrium of treated and multiparous bitches; and (4) the presence of dilated endometrial glands was the difference found in the treated bitches, because they were absent in nulliparous and multiparous ones.

E-mail: leydsonf@fmva.unesp.br The aim of this research was to evaluate the shedding of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in fecal samples from 14 calves from one dairy farm, from birth until 60 days old and from cows until eight weeks after parturition. The higher percentage of oocysts excreted was observed in 7-day-old calves. In the post-partum period 43.7% of cows were positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts. Further analyses were accomplished in 57 calves from another 32 milk farms, previously known as positive for Cryptosporidium, through oocysts fecal screening and clinical signs analyses until calves were 30 days old. Fecal samples from all animals that presented diarrhea were screened for the presence of bacteria, virus (Rotavirus and Coronavirus ) and protozoa (Eimeria spp.).

#14 - Immunophrophylactic strategies against enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens type D in goats

Abstract in English:

Veschi J.L.A., Dutra I.S., Miyakawa M.E.F., Perri S.H.V. & Uzal F.A. 2006. Immunophrophylactic strategies against enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens type D in goats. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 26(1):51-54. Departamento de Produção e Saúde Animal, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Rua Clóvis Pestana 793, Araçatuba, SP 16050-680, Brazil. E-mail: isdutra@fmva.unesp.br The serological response to an experimental vaccine against Clostridium perfringens type D enterotoxemia was evaluated in four groups of goats. Group 1 received colostrum from unvaccinated cows and no vaccine. Groups 2, 3 and 4 received colostrum from vaccinated cows. In addition, Groups 3 and 4 received a vaccine dose at 80 days of age, and Group 4 received a second vaccine dose at 120 days of age. Serum antibody levels were determined by ELISA in cows before and after calving, and in goats at 3, 80, 120 and 160 days of age. No significant difference in serum antibody levels was observed between vaccinated and unvaccinated cows, or between the four groups of goats evaluated at 3 days of life. Groups 3 and 4 presented mean antibody titers of 0.6 and 1.1 IU/ml, respectively, 40 days after first vaccination. The vaccine response of Group 4 was 1.8 IU/ml 40 days after the booster dose and was higher than that observed for Group 3 (0.2 IU/ml). Thus, in the proposed regimen the use of heterologous colostrum did not induce passive immunization in goat kids. However, first vaccination and a booster dose after 40 days triggered satisfactory antibody levels.

#15 - Humoral iminune response, bacterial recovery and time lesions in mice geneticaly selected for high and low antibody production and in outbreed Balb/c mice face to Leptospira interrogans sorovar ictero

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Marinho M., Langoni H., Oliveira S.L., Carreira R., Perri, S.H.V. e Luvizoto M.C. 2002. [Humoral iminune response, bacterial recovery and time lesions in mice geneticaly selected for high and low antibody production and in outbreed Balb/c mice face to Leptospira interrogans sorovar icterohaemorrhagiae.] The aim of the present work was to evaluate the association among the kinetics of humoral immune response, the recovery ofviable leptospiras and the intensity ofthe tissue lesions in mice selected for high (H) and low (L) production of antibodies (selection N-A) and in mice from the outbreed Balb/c Iine, inoculated with pathogenic Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae. Toe H and L lines showed modifications in some steps ofthe immune response, mainly in relation to the macrophagic activity, representing extreme phenotypes found in heterogeneous natural populations. Mice were sacrificed in eight moments after the infection. Analysis of the results revealed that from the 7th day after the infection, on Iine H mice presented antibodies titles significantly higher as compared to the L line mice, maintaining the multispecific effect Balb/c tine mice showed intermediàte results between the two Iines. Antibodies production worked as a timiting factor to the infection, becausewhen a greater leptospiras recovery was obtained, at the initial phase of the infection, the titles of antibodies were elevated. Inflammatory and degenerative process led to similar lesions in the organs ofinfected mice. Only a variation in the degree oftissue compromising was observed according to the tine. H tine mice showed more extensive lesions than L and Balb/c lines mice. For the Balb/c tine mice, the lesions were moderate. As a mie, H and Balb/c mice lines showed a Th2 profile of immune response, with higher indexes of antibody production and gravity ofthe lesions, while L line mice presented a Th 1 profile ofimmune response.

RESUMO.- Marinho M., Langoni H., Oliveira S.L., Carreira R., Perri, S.H.V. e Luvizoto M.C. 2002. [Humoral iminune response, bacterial recovery and time lesions in mice geneticaly selected for high and low antibody production and in outbreed Balb/c mice face to Leptospira interrogans sorovar icterohaemorrhagiae.]

#16 - Preferable localization and different infestation levels of the horn fly (Haematobia irritans) on Nelore bulls, 22(1):25-32

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Lima, L.G.F, Prado, A.P. & Perri, S.H.V. 2002. [Preferable localization and different infestation levels of the horn fly (Haematobia irritans) on Nelore bulls.] E-mail: gustalima@hotmail.com Many studies about Haematobia irritans have been made due to the damages and worries it causes to cattle breeding in many countries. The common name of the fly is related to its behavior. 1111 Europe and the United States of America it is named horn-fly because it stays right on the base of the horns in order to protect itself from low temperatures; in Latin America, however, it is known as "mosca-da-paleta" because of its preferred localization on the shoulder of cattle. Biological aspects of the bovines can lead to different levels of fly infestation in the herd. Mean numbers of flies on different anatomic regions and individual infestations were evaluated in 60 Nelore bulls with the sarne zootechnic features during 1998 in Araçatuba city, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Both sides of the animals were filmed, and the number of flies was recorded in cassette tapes. Fly counts and their delimitation on 15 anatomic regions were performed from film viewing. During rainy days a significant increase (p<0.05) in number of flies in the abdominal region was observed. Shoulders, forelegs, back and ribs showed the highest number of flies (p<0.05). The evaluation of individual infestation revealed less than 50 flies on 50% of the cattle, 50 to 100 flies on 38% and over 100 flies on 12% of them.
