E-mail: tbarcante@gmail.com Vesicular stomatitis (VS) is an infectious viral disease that affects bovines, equines, swine, wild animals and humans. As it is indistinguishable from other vesicular diseases, mainly Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), it causes restrictions in commercial livestock trade at national and international levels and also significant economic losses. As the epidemiology and maintenance of VS virus in nature are not clearly understood it is difficult to take effective control measures. VS was diagnosed in some regions of Brazil, such as Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Alagoas. Cattle and horses with clinical symptoms of drooling, shedding of the lingual epithelium, presence of vesicles on the oral mucosa were observed and reported to the National Animal Health Office health of Maranhão State, Brazil. Samples of serum of these animals were collected and sent to Laboratório Nacional de Agropecuaria for ELISA and virus neutralization and differential diagnosis for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). The results of ELISA confirmed the VS. In the differential diagnosis, the results were negative for FMD. Samples of bovine epithelial tissue for VS by PCR confirmation of diagnosis were collected and sent to Biological Institute of São Paulo. Molecular results confirmed the Vesiculovirus Indiana III (Alagoas/VSAV) infection.

E-mail: elisabetesales@gmail.com Ehrlichia sp. and Anaplasma platys are Gram-negative micro-organisms, obligate intracellular parasites, residing in cytoplasmic vacuoles of leukocytes and platelets, found in peripheral blood or tissue. Few reports have been made about ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis in cats in Brazil, which are based on the presence of morulae in leukocytes and platelets, or by detecting antibodies. The objective of this study was to investigate the natural infection with Ehrlichia sp. and A. platys in cats in Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, by hematoscopia and DNA detection of these agents. Samples of whole blood and serum from 91 cats, regardless of race, gender and age. Blood count, serum biochemistry and PCR using primers for Ehrlichia sp. and A. platys were perfomed. Data from hematoscopia showed 9.89% of morulae only in platelets. The DNA of A. platys was detected in 13.18% of the 91 samples and 44.44% of the positive at hematoscopia. The DNA of Ehrlichia sp. was not detected in any sample. All animals studied did not show clinical signs neither positive laboratory results. The data suggest that domestic cats can serve as potential reservoirs for A. platys as asymptomatic form of related diseases.

E-mail: rseabra@cevap.org.br Detection of Leptospira by PCR had not yet been described in snakes. This study investigated, by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and PCR, the presence of antibodies to Leptospira spp. and Leptospira spp., respectively, in venomous and non-venomous wildlife and captivity snakes. All snakes were divided into three groups to be compared: Group 1 (wildlife snakes - WS); Group 2 (snakes in intensive captivity - IC), and Group 3 (collective semi-extensive captivity -CC). Of the 147 snakes studied, 52 (35.4%) were positive for leptospirosis by MAT, 8 (15.4%) belonging to Group 1 (WS), 34 (65.4%) to Group 2 (IC) and 10 (19.2%) to Group 3 (CC). Jararaca (Bothrops jararaca) presented the highest average titer (66.7%, N=22/33) among the three group studied, and Hardjo prajtino was the most prevalent serovar (88.5%, N=46/52), with titers varying from 100 to 3200. Leptospira interrogans was revealed by PCR in kidney and liver of caiçaca (Bothrops moojeni) and jararaca-pintada (Bothrops pauloensis), showing 100% and 93% identity respectively. Future studies should be carried out for better understanding of the role of snakes as a reservoir of Leptospira in nature.

ABSTRACT.- Hage M.C.F.N.S., Iwasaki M., Rabbani S.R., Kamikawa L., Cervantes H.J.R., Bombonato P.P., Sterman F.A. & Otaduy M.C.G. 2010. [Magnetic resonance imaging in the investigation of canine heads.] P.H. Rolfs s/n, Viçosa, MG 36570-000, Brazil. E-mail: crishage@ufv.br Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive method of diagnostic imaging to evaluate soft tissues, specially the brain, however it is expensive. The method is based on the nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon that occurs when atomic nucleus with magnetic proprieties in the body are submitted to a strong magnetic field, and excited with radio frequency generating a radio frequency signal captured by a receptive antenna. The signal is processed by Fourier Transform for the image formation. This study had the objective to obtain 10 complete exams of heads in cadavers of normal dogs to MRI and to make an Atlas of head structures. The images were obtained with a magnetic resonance unit Gyroscan S15/HP Philips using a magnetic field of 1,5Tesla. The cadavers were positioned with the head into a human head coil and submitted to sagittal slices used to plan transverse and dorsal slices in T1, T2 and DP spin-echo sequences. In T1 we adjusted TR=400ms and TE=30ms, in T2 TR=2000ms and TE=80ms and in DP TR=2000ms and TE=30ms. The slice thickness was 4mm, the number of averages 2, the matrix 256x256, the factor 1,0 and the field of view 14cm. The duration of the complete exam of the head was 74,5minutes. The images obtained with the described sequences and with the human head coil was of good quality. In T1 fat was hyperintense and fluid was hypointense. In T2 fat was less hyperintense and fluid was hyperintense. The cortical bone and the air were hypointense in all sequences used because of the low proton density. The DP sequence showed the best contrast between white and gray matter when compared with T2 and T1 sequences. Distinction of cerebral sulcus and gyrus was possible because T2 showed the cerebrospinal fluid. The identification of bone structures that compound the region, muscles, main venous and arterial vessels and structures of the central nervous system, besides elements of the digestory and respiratory systems and structures of the eyes among others was possible through contrast obtained with MRI. In this study the MRI acquired in T1, DP and T2 were complementary for the anatomic study of the head and been able to demonstrate the structures of the canine head with rich anatomic details. The time used to do the complete exam of the head is compatible with the use in live animals since properly anesthetized and controlled. We had opened a way for the study of live animals and for the beginning of disease investigation, mainly that of neurologic origin because this technique is excellent for brain visualization.

[Magnetic resonance imaging in the investigation of canine heads.]

E-mail: leticiacmonteiro@yahoo.com.br The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of bovine brucellosis in 22 counties which make up the region Extract 1 of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in order to identify risk factors associated with the infection. The sample region encompasses an area of 70,214.1 km² and represents 19.7% of the State. The region studied has about 5.7 million head of cattle, corresponding to 23% of the total of 24.9 million cattle in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. On 210 farms, between December 2003 and March 2004, 2,376 blood samples were collected from cows, aged 24 months or older, for serial diagnostic tests. Screening through the buffered acidified antigen test was confirmed by the 2-mercaptoetanol test. On the occasion of sample collection a questionnaire with information related to identification, kind of cattle and management practices was filled out. In individual animals the real prevalence was estimated at 5.6%, and in the cattle herds at 37.3%. The variables, which presented association through odds ratio (OR), univariate analysis and 95% confidence interval (CI) with serum positivity for brucellosis, were: the exploration of beef cattle (OR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.49-5.34), Zebu breed (OR = 2.62, 95% CI = 1.40-4.88) and abortion (OR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.01-3.33). The results shown here demonstrate, despite the prevalence of brucellosis in the extract of Mato Grosso do Sul studied, that the control of the disease may depend on adoption of a program focusing upon the exploration of beef cattle, the Zebu breed and the occurrence of abortion.

#17 - Investigations on mineral nutrition of cattle in Brazil; a review

Abstract in English:

A review of studies made in Brazil on dísorders of mineral metabolism in cattle, mainly mineral deficiencies, and on botulism, the most important complication of phosphorus deficiency, is presented. Only studies made after 1976 are considered, this review being a continuation of that presented at the Latin American Symposium on Mineral Nutrition Research in Grazing Ruminants, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 1976. The mineral deficiencies diagnosed in bovines in Brazil were those of P, Na, Co, Cu, I, Zn and Mn (this last depending on the excess of Fe in the pasture and excess supplementation with Co); low values of Se in liver and blood serum samples were obtained in certain areas. Epizootic botulism was diagnosed in large areas where phosphorus deficiency occurs. Copper poisoning, hypocalcemia due to the ingestion of pasture rich in oxalates, and fluorine poisoning were diagnosed. The occurrences of the diagnosed mineral deficiencies up to 1976, and from 1976 to 1987, and of epizootic botulism were registered in 3 maps, together with the respective bibliographic references.
