Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Souza M.F., Carvalho A.Q., Garino Jr F. & Riet-Correa F. 2011. [Caseous lymphadenitis in slaughtered hair sheep in northeastern Brazil.] E-mail: franklin.riet@pq.cnpq.br The objective of this paper is to report the prevalence and distribution of lesions of caseous lymphadenitis (CL) in hair sheep slaughtered in an abattoir in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. From 1,466 sheep slaughtered, 236 (15.9%) had gross lesions similar to that of CL. The prevalence was higher in females, 17.9% (135/754), than in males, 13.8% (101/732). Ninety seven (36.3%) out of 268 lesions were localized in the prescapular lymph node, 22.4% (60/268) in the parotideal, and 20.9% (56/268) in the prefemoral. Only 70 (26.1%) out of 268 lesions suggestive of CL were detected during ante mortem examination. Caseous lymphadenitis-like lesions were observed in all flocks examined from different municipalities in the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco and Bahia. Cultures and histologic examination were performed in samples from 51 lesions. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was isolated in 74.5% (43/51) samples, Staphylococcus aureus in 7.8% (4/51) samples, Escherichia coli in 2% (1/51), and in 5.9% (3/51) samples cultures were negative. Histologic findings in 11 lymph nodes showed all characteristic lesions of caseous lymphadenitis: central area of necrosis formed by concentric lamellae, with large bacterial colonies and mineralization, surrounded by an inflammatory exudate with epithelioid macrophages and few neutrophils; lymphocytes and plasma cells were observed in the next layer, and fibrous tissue was surrounding the whole lesion. Lesions in the other 32 lymph nodes showed most, but not all lesions characteristic of the disease. Giant cells were observed in 21 lymph nodes. Histologic lesions in lymph nodes from which S. aureus was isolated were similar as those of CL. These findings suggest that CL lesions are characteristic, but not pathognogmonic, because they can be confused with lesions caused by other pyogenic bacteria or tuberculosis; therefore bacteriologic examination is necessary for the diagnosis of the disease.

E-mail: headleysa@cesumar.br A retrospective study of cattle slaughtered in northern Paraná during 2000 was performed to determine the prevalence and geographical distribution of bovine eurytrematosis (BE), as identified by the Federal Inspection Service (SIF). The cattle was from different regions of the State of Paraná; all regions had cattle parasitized by Eurytrema spp. BE was identified in 12.1% (12,534/103,411) of the total number of cattle inspected. Prevalence of animals parasitized by Eurytrema spp varied from 8.3% (Region G, São João do Caiuá, 1,069/12,914) to 40.5% (Region R, Ponta Grossa, 225/555). BE was more prevalent during the month of March (1.6) and markedly reduced during May (-2). A possible seasonal predominance of BE was identified: comparatively fewer cases occurred from April to August, while there was a peak from December to March. The study indicates that bovine eurytrematosis is hypoendemic and occurs in almost all geographical regions of the State of Paraná. The prevalence within this State is variable and may be directly related to factors of the biological cycle of the trematode, particularities of each region, and environmental conditions.

#44 - Seasonal fluctuation of Dermatobia hominis in bovine skins from a slaughterhouse, 20(4):151-154

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Brito L.G. & Moya Borja G.E. 2000. [Seasonal fluctuation of Dermatobia hominis in bovine skins from a slaughterhouse.] Depto Parasitologia Animal, Univ. Fed. Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica, RJ 23851-970, Brazil The effect of temperature, rainfall and relative humidity on the seasonal fluctuation of Dermatobia hominis was investigated by counting the parasitized sidos of slaughtered cattle at the abattoir of Pirai county, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 1995 to October 1997. The higher incidence ofparasitized sidos was observed in November 1995 and December 1996. Secondary peaks were observed in March and May 1996 and March 1997. High percentage of parasitism in skins through the summer seasons was associated with mean temperatures of 25ºC and rainfall of 200 mm. The larval populations declined in both years from June to October, probably due to low temperatures at an average between 21 ºC and 22.SºC, and to Iow rainfall (under 50 mm). In a total of5,142 skins checked in the 2-year study, 2,710 sidos (52.7%) were parasitized with D. hominis larvae.

RESUMO.- Brito L.G. & Moya Borja G.E. 2000. [Seasonal fluctuation of Dermatobia hominis in bovine skins from a slaughterhouse.] Depto Parasitologia Animal, Univ. Fed.

#45 - Salmonella serovars in meat of horses slaughtered in northeastern Brazil., 20(2):80-84

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Hofer E., Zamora M.R.N., Lopes A.E., Moura A.M.C:, Araújo H.L., Leite M.D.D. & Silva Filho S.J. 2000. [Salmonella serovars in meat of horses slaughtered in northeastern Brazil.] In the sixties and seventies there was an extraordinary increase in export of horse meat products to Europe andjapah. This favored an increase in risk of Salmonella outspread through those products to human and animal consumer populations. Thus, from an exporting company dealing with horse meat located in northeastern Brazil (state of Pernambuco), 19,238 fragments of more external muscles, Salmonella was isolated from 666 samples colleted from 433 animals (horses and donkeys). The serotyping of 745 isolates showed 98 serovars pertaining to 14 serogroups, predominantly classified into subspecies 1 (98.9%). S. Anatum, S. Carrau, S. Saintpaul, S. Agona, and S. Typhimurium were the most frequent serovars isolated. Preliminary data indicate that the primary causes for the presence of Salmonella in the meats probably was contact with feces from slaughtered animals, as well a.s possible contamination of environments, in view of the absence of human carriers researched in part of the personnel.

Abstract in Portuguese:

SINOPSE.- Hofer E., Zamora M.R.N., Lopes A.E., Moura A.M.C:, Araújo H.L., Leite M.D.D. & Silva Filho S.J. 2000. [Salmonella serovars in meat of horses slaughtered in northeastern Brazil.]

#46 - Isolation of Chlamydia psittaci from water buffaloes slaughtered for consumption in Belém, Pará

Abstract in English:

A Chlamydia agent was isolated from 14 (70%) samples of organs and carcasses of slaughtered water buffaloes identified as Chlamydia by its morphological and staining characteristics, its pathogenic effect on chicken embryos. It was characterized as Chlamydia psittaci by the direct immunofluorescence test. In the isolation experiment, the serial passages system of inoculation from organs to the yolk sac of embryonated chicken was used, and 3 passages were made for each sample. The identification and characterization of isolates were made by the observation of typical cytoplasmatic inclusions in smears of the yolk sac membrane of embryos after inoculation and impressions of lesioned organs, stained by Giemsa, Macchiavello and Castañeda methods and by the fluorescence antibodies technique. Twenty samples of organs and carcass of water buffaloes that presented inflammation of the serosa in one or more of the lungs, liver and heart were studied. The lung was the organ with greatest number of isolates (8), followed by brain (6), liver (5) and heart (2). A significant correlation between the macroscopic lesions and the positive fluorescence of the agent in the correspondent inoculum was observed in the lung.

#48 - Frequency of atrophic rhinitis in swine slaughtered in Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Gross examination of the nasal structures of 1273 swine of various breeds, of both sexes, ra.hging in age from six to eight months, performed at slaughterhouses in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, showed that 300(23.6%) had turbinate atrophy or necrosis, lesions characteristic ofatrophic rhinitis. Seventy-five of these animals also showed deviation of the nasal septum. Twenty-three (2.4%) of the remaining 973 animals, without atrophic rhinitis, showed nasal septum deviation. A positive correlation (p < 0.01) was shown between the degree of turbina te atrophy and nasal septum deviation, demonstrated by an increase of 15 .9% as the severity oflesions increased. The frequency of atrophy of the turbinate banes varied from 18.0% to 48.9% in the principal swine producing regions of the state.

#49 - Salmonellae from slaughtered pigs of Pará, Brazil

Abstract in English:

The bacteriological processing of the submandibular lymphnodés of 400 slaughtered pigs from 37 different rural holdings of 9 districts from the island Ilha do Marajó and nordeast of the state Para, Brazil, revealed the isolation of 51 (12,57%) salmonellae belonging to 6 serogroups and the following 10 serotypes: S. avonmouth 18 (35.29%), S. seremban 16 (31.37%), S. typhimurium 6 (11.76%), S. java and S. remo 3 (5.88%), and S. newport, S. miami, S. münster, S. oslo and S. tshiongwe once (1.96%). The most prevalent serotypes S. avonmouth and S. seremban found in this area were considered exotic types for pigs. The swine breeding in this area is very primitive and the pigs were of native type without a defined breed. The pigs are living free near the houses and on surrounding fields. The feed consisted mainly of plants, roots, fruits, insects, and other invertebrates found in the soH and·of the rest of slaughtered animals or cadavers found on the field.

#50 - Anomalies in the development of the tubular genital system of slaughtered female buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

Abstract in English:

Genital systems of 612 female water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis Lin.) of undefined breed, obtained from slaughterhouses in the State of Para, were studied. A total of 77 (12.6%) animals showed abnormalities. Results from pregnant and non-pregnant animals were considered separately. In the oviducts of pregnant buffaloes, one case (1.3%) of unilateral segmentary aplasia was identified, while three similar cases (3.9%) were noted in non-pregnant buffaloes, as well as one case (1 .3%) with bilateral involvement. A large percentage (44.2%) of the findings were paraovarian cysts: 26 instances (33.8%) of unilateral paraovarian cysts were identified in the mesosalpinx, 11 (14.3%) corresponding to pregnant and 15 (19.5%) to non-pregnant females; eight bilateral cases (10.4%) were also observed, of which three (3.9%) were found in pregnant and five (6.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. In the uterus, out of a total of 29 (37.6%) anomalies, seven (9.1%) appeared in pregnant and 22 (28.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. A high prevalence (28.6%) of cystic formation on the perimetrium was observed in these animals. Malformations of the cervix were only found in three (3.9%) non-pregnant buffaloes. Two anomalies (2.6%) of the vagina were encountered in non-pregnant animals. Four (5.2%) anomalies were seen in the vestibule, one (1 .3%) in a pregnant animal and three (3.9%) in non-pregnant animals.
