E-mail: ferreiradol@gmail.com The incidence of obstructive urolithiasis in sheep is high, especially in feedlot males, both for meat production, or the breeder of high genetic value. The urinary acidification is one of the methods for preventing this disease and can be performed efficiently with supplementation of ammonium chloride (AC) in the diet. It was used 100 male lambs, in a feedlot, crossbred (Ile de France X White Dorper), aged approximately three months. It was constituted three groups: Group 21AC (n=40) that received 400mg/kg/PV of ammonium chloride/animal/day for 21 consecutive days, the time of discontinuation of the urinary acidifiers (M3) and continued clinical follow until the end of the experiment (M6); Group 42AC (n=40), that received 400mg/kg/PV of ammonium chloride/animal/day for 42 consecutive days, Group control (n=20), that did not receive ammonium chloride throughout the experimental period. The feed consisted of total dry matter, composed of 15% ground hay and 85% concentrate, water and mineral salts ad libitum. After 14 days of adaptation to food and the environment, the moments (M) for clinical evaluation, and blood collection ultrasound examinations were performed with an interval of seven days, and M0 (immediately before the beginning of the treatment with ammonium chloride), M1 (seven days), M2 (14 days after), M3 (21 days after initiation of treatment and suspension of ammonium chloride in Group 21CA), M4 (28 days), M5 (35 days), and M6 (42 days), amounting to 56 days of feedlot. The serum urea and creatinine showed no change in renal function, although the urea was above the reference values for sheep. There were compatible ultrasound images with bladder stones and dilatation of the renal pelvis. In Group 21AC, 15% (6/40) of the animals had bladder stones; in Group 42AC 5% (2/40); and in Group control, 20% (4/20) of the lambs. It was visualized suggestive images of sediment and crystals in 31% (31/100) of examined animals. Ultrasonography allowed visualization of kidney and bladder abnormalities, which were not related to clinical symptoms of obstructive urolithiasis, appearing as an examination complement of great importance for the early detection of changes in the urinary system of sheep.

RESUMO.- Ferreira D.O.L., Santarosa B.P., Belotta A.F., Mamprim M.J., Silva A.A., Dias A., Chiacchio S.B. & Gonçalves R.C. 2014. [Renal and bladder ultrasound changes in feedlot sheep and supplemented with ammonium chloride.]

#22 - Adrenal glands measurements and ultrasound evaluation in nonhuman primates: squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), owl monkey (Aotus azarae infulatus) and howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans), 34(9):903-910

ABSTRACT.- Souza A.C., Lange R.R., Przydzimirski A.C., Castro P.H.G., Pascoli A., Junior J.C.S. & Froes T.R. 2014. [Adrenal glands measurements and ultrasound evaluation in nonhuman primates: squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), owl monkey (Aotus azarae infulatus) and howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans).] E-mail: froestilde@gmail.com The adrenal glands have endocrine functions related to multiple vital functions and are closely related to the animal’s ability to adapt to stress. The ultrasound is the diagnostic method of choice for evaluation of glands in different species. Considering the scarce literature, one may question whether the adrenal disorders in nonhuman primates are uncommon or underdiagnosed, and a hypothesis exists that this fact is determined by the lack of parameters. The goal is to describe the sonographic features of the adrenal glands for three species of nonhuman primates kept in captivity: squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), owl monkey (Aotus azarae infulatus) and howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans). It is concluded that it is possible to identify the adrenal glands by ultrasound, and the reference standards have been established successfully for the species in question. It is noteworthy that the adaptation of animals in many stressful environments is often accompanied by a hypertrophy of the adrenal glands, so one should take into account that the measurements performed in this study were established in captive animals.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Ferreira M.A., Allemann N., Dias L.G.G.G. & Honsho C.S. 2014. [Relation between opfthalmic ultrasound biometry and the morphometric parameters of the skull, age, weight and gender in domestic cats.] Dr. Armando Salles Oliveira 201, Pq. Universitário, Franca, SP 14404-600, Brazil. E-mail: crishonsho@unifran.br Ocular ultrasonography is a helpful ophthalmic examination, performed on the absence of transparency in ocular means and frequently requested prior intraocular surgery. Unfortunately, the lack of studies upon ultrasonografic images of the normal feline eye, difficults the evaluation of its biometry and its inner structures in many ophthalmic diseases and also before surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ocular biometry and the morphometric parameters of the cranium of 40 healthy adult cats, including 22 Persian cats (Brachycephalic group - BG) and 18 Mixed-breed cats (Noun brachycephalic group - NBG). B/A-mode ultrasonographic biometry, utilizing a 9 MHz probe, was performed for depth of the anterior chamber (D1), lens axial length (D2), depth of the vitreous chamber (D3) and axial length of the globe (D4). Morphometric parameters of the cranium were obtained for bizygomatic (BZ) and occipital frontal (OF) diameters. Data was collected and statistical analysis, including “t” paired tests, variance and covariance analysis and multiple linear regressions was performed for every obtained measure and also for animal ages, weigh and gender. Statistic relevant values were observed in D4 parameter for female cats of BG. Multiple linear regression indicated some influence of the weigh, age and OF in D1, D2 and D4 of PG; and of BZ in D1, D3 and D4 of NBG. Besides that, it was observed that biometry was also influenced by weigh, age and morphometric parameters of their craniums in both groups.

#24 - Ultrasound evaluation of extra- and intra-abdominal umbilical structures involution in healthy Nelore calves products of natural conception or in vitro fertilization, 33(8):1021-1032

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Sturion T.T., Sturion M.A.T., Sturion D.J. & Lisboa J.A.N. 2013. [Ultrasound evaluation of extra- and intra-abdominal umbilical structures involution in healthy Nelore calves products of natural conception or in vitro fertilization.] Postal 6001, Londrina, PR 86051-990, Brazil. E-mail: janlisboa@uel.br This study was carried out to characterize the involution of the umbilical cord structures in healthy Nelore calves during their first 35 days of life, and to compare this process in calves conceived by natural methods or by in vitro fertilization (IVF). Forty calves were separated in two groups (n=20) according to their conception method (natural or IVF) and each group consisted of ten male and ten female calves. The ultrasound (7.5 MHz micro convex transducer) was used to examine all the remaining structures of the umbilical cord that make the external navel and the abdominal structures (umbilical vein, left umbilical artery and allantoic duct), and their diameters were measured in distinct locations. The examinations were performed between 24 and 36 hours of life and at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days of age. The effects of sex, age and method of conception were tested by repeated measures ANOVA. The ultrasound examination was suitable for evaluation of extra- and intra-abdominal umbilical structures and characterization of its involutive physiological process. Both veins were visualized in the external umbilicus up to 14 days of life and set of structures in process of atrophy were seen after this age. In the abdomen, the artery and the vein could be examined up to 35 days of age, and the allantoic duct only during the first week of life. These structures showed a regular and consistent hyperechoic wall and a homogeneous anechoic lumen. The diameter of all studied structures decreased throughout the first month of life (p<0.05) without any sex effect (p>0.05). The umbilical vessels and the allantoic duct were slightly wider (diameter 1-3 mm larger) in calves conceived by IVF. Differently from the highest values previously demonstrated for Bos taurus calves, we can disclose that in healthy newborn Nelore calves the thickness of the structures which make the external navel should not exceed 2 cm, the diameter of the umbilical vein and artery can reach 1 cm and the diameter of the allantoic duct is close to 0.5cm.

#25 - Abdominal and pelvic ultrasonographic study of the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), 33(2):265-272

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Guimarães L.D., Hage M.C.F.N.S., Paula T.A.R., Borges A.P.B., Carreta Jr M., Rodrigues A., Carneiro F.T. & Silva V.H.D. 2013. Abdominal and pelvic ultrasonographic study of the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 33(2):265-272. Departamento de Veterinária, Centro de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Avenida Peter Henry Rolfs s/n, Viçosa, MG 36570-000, Brazil. E-mail: ludiegues@yahoo.com.br The aim of the present study was the ultrasound characterization of the abdominal and pelvic regions of five maned wolves kept in captivity at the Triage Center of Wild Animals of the Federal University of Viçosa (Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres, Universidade Federal de Viçosa). This characterization included descriptions of ultrasonographic aspects and measurements of various structures using B-mode ultrasound. Biometric data were collected to assess the existence of significant linear correlations between these measurements and the measurements obtained by ultrasound. Additionally, hematological and serum biochemistry evaluations of the animals were performed. The ultrasound findings were similar to those available in the literature on domestic dogs, which were used for comparison as a result of the lack of published data regarding maned wolves. The latter species showed characteristics closely resembling those of the former, differing in the spleen and left renal cortex echogenicities, in the appearance of the prostatic and testicular regions and in the hepatic portal vein morphology. In the current study, the biometric values were similar to those previously published; however, no data regarding thoracic perimeter, modified crown-rump length or thoracic depth were found in the literature for this Canidae species. Statistical analysis showed the existence of a strong negative correlation between the modified crown-rump length and left renal length, between the modified crown-rump length and the right renal volume, between the thoracic perimeter and the height at the cranial pole of the left adrenal gland and between the thoracic perimeter and the height at the caudal pole of the left adrenal gland. Laboratory findings, including segmented neutrophil, eosinophil, monocyte and lymphocyte counts and the serum levels of glucose, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, urea, total protein, globulin, creatine phosphokinase, triglyceride, sodium, phosphate, potassium and chloride, were inconsistent with values found by other authors. The ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging method that must be further explored in the medicine of wild animals; therefore, additional research in this area is required.

#26 - Ultrasound call detection in capybara, 32(7):663-666

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Nogueira S.S.C., Barros K.S., Almeida M.H., Pedroza J.P., Nogueira Filho S.L.G. & Tokumaru R.S. 2012. Ultrasound call detection in capybara. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 32(7):663-666. Laboratório de Etologia Aplicada, Departamento de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz, Rodov. Ilhéus-Itabuna Km 16, Ilhéus, BA 45662-900, Brazil. E-mail: seleneuesc@gmail.com The vocal repertoire of some animal species has been considered a non-invasive tool to predict distress reactivity. In rats ultrasound emissions were reported as distress indicator. Capybaras’ vocal repertoire was reported recently and seems to have ultrasound calls, but this has not yet been confirmed. Thus, in order to check if a poor state of welfare was linked to ultrasound calls in the capybara vocal repertoire, the aim of this study was to track the presence of ultrasound emissions in 11 animals under three conditions: 1) unrestrained; 2) intermediately restrained, and 3) highly restrained. The ultrasound track identified frequencies in the range of 31.8±3.5 kHz in adults and 33.2±8.5 kHz in juveniles. These ultrasound frequencies occurred only when animals were highly restrained, physically restrained or injured during handling. We concluded that these calls with ultrasound components are related to pain and restraint because they did not occur when animals were free of restraint. Thus we suggest that this vocalization may be used as an additional tool to assess capybaras’ welfare.

E-mail: mpgalego@uol.com.br Cataracts represent the leading cause of blindness in dogs. The second most common cause of cataract in dogs is a result of metabolic alterations caused by Diabetes mellitus (DM). Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is a high-frequency (50 MHz) ultrasonographic method that produces B mode images of microscopic quality. The objective of this study was, by means of UBM use, to compare the anterior segment structures of the canine eyes, both with diabetic and non-diabetic cataract, in order to detect changes caused by DM. The parameters evaluated were: cornea thickness, anterior chamber’s depth, increased cellularity inside the anterior chamber, and iridocorneal angle measurement. Eighty-seven eyes of 47 dogs were examined, divided into three groups: control (GCO), non-diabetic cataract (GCAT) and diabetic cataract (GDM). The results showed that the diabetic group presented a higher cornea thickness than the other groups. The control group showed deeper anterior chambers without increased cellularity. When the iridocorneal angle measurements were analyzed, it was found that there were no statistically significant differences between the three groups. Based on these results, we can conclude that: the eyes of diabetic dogs with cataract showed a central cornea higher thickness compared to the eyes of dogs with cataract of different etiologies, and to dogs with normal eyes; there is a decrease of the anterior chamber depth and a increase of cellularity in the eyes of dogs with cataract compared to normal eyes, there is no significant difference between the iridocorneal angle measurement in the eyes of dogs with cataract, diabetic or not, and normal dogs.

RESUMO.- Santana E. Jr M., Beserra P.S., Brito A.B., Miranda S.A., Nikolak E. & Domingues S.F.S. 2009. [Renal artery Triplex Doppler and the relationship between kidney ecobiometry with atlanto-coccyges distance (ACD) and height (H) in Canis familiaris.]

E-mail: shfarha@ufpa.br The aim of this paper was to establish the relation between the kidney ecobiometry with atlanto-coccyges distance (ACD) and height (H) in adult healthy dogs, to obtain normality parameters for assessment of renal size and volume, as well as establish reference values to evaluate kidney blood perfusion by the resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) of main renal artery. The study was applied at 22 adult dogs, 11 males and 11 females. Previously, the DAC and H of all animals were measured. For ultrasonographic examination, the ultra-sound system HDI 4000 PHILIPS equipped with a multi-frequency microconvex transducer, Color Doppler and Spectral Doppler devices was used. The animals were placed into right or left lateral decubitus position, in agreement with the kidney to be assessed. The longitudinal (LD) and dorsoventral diameters (DVD) of kidney were measured in longitudinal plane, and the transverse diameter (TD) was determined in transversal section. The renal volume (V) was automatically calculated by the ultrasound software. With Triplex Doppler, the RI and PI of right and left main renal arteries were obtained. All data were represented in mean ± SEM. Linear regression analyses were performed with renal LD, DVD, TD and V as dependent variable, and ACD and H as independent variable. RI and PI were compared between right and left renal arteries with Student’s t-test. The LD, DVD, TD (cm) and V (ml) mean measurements for the left and right kidneys were: 5.24±0.27, 3.07±0.15, 3.07±0.9, 28.01±3.4 and 4.50±0.19, 2.88±0.14, 2.71±0.15, 21.27±2.6. All regression analyses were significant for the intercept and regression coefficient (P<0.01). There were statistical differences on RI and PI means between right and left renal arteries (P=0.001). The RI and PI means of left and right renal artery obtained were: 0.62±0.08 and 1.34±0.18; 0.70±0.06 and 1.62±0.13. The data obtained in the present paper can be used as parameters for evaluation of the renal size, volume and perfusion in adult dogs.

In Wild Animal Medicine, ultrasonographic exams could be considered as a tool to diagnose and prevent disease. Ultrasonographic examination of twenty snakes (Boa constrictor) was performed in order to describe the morphological and ultrasonography appearance of their coelomic structures. Examination by ultrasonography revealed the parechymal liver ranging from slightly hypoechogenic to hyperechogenic, with echogenic margins and homogeneous echotexture in total scanning of this organ. The kidney was accessible for examination by sagittal ultrasound, showing an ellipsoid shape, a hyperechogenic capsule with a thin and regular wall. Ultrasonographic scanning of ovarian follicle showed an ovoid shape, as well as a thin, regular and slightly hyperechogenic edge. No evident structures from male reproductive system were identified by ultrasound examination because of their similar echogenic appearance to the tissues around and the “body fat” that lies in this region. Examination by ultrasound of the coelomic structures was a fast and repeatable technique, which provides useful data to recognize the morphology, sintopy and ultrasonographic appearance of organs such as liver, kidneys and vitellogenic follicles.

Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 29(3):241-245. Setor de Clínica e Cirurgia de Grandes Animais, Departamento de Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, 36570-000 Viçosa, MG, Brazil. E-mail: msouza@ufv.br The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of induced tendinitis in the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) of horses through ultrasonographic evaluation. Thus, six 8 to15-year-old healthy gelding horses (=12 years) were used. Tendinitis of the SDFT was provoked in both forelimbs via intratendineous administration of 2.5mg of collagenase (2.5mg.mL-1), what was considered as beginning of the experimental phase. Twelve days after induced tendinitis, the horses were submitted to two treatments: (1) in the lesion caused in the right SDFT (treated group, TG), 2.5mL of PRP activated with calcium chloride at 0.0125mol.L-1, at concentrations from 320,000 to 500,000 platelets.µL-1, were administered; (2) in the tendinitis of the left SDFT (control group, CG), 2.5mL of 0.9% saline solution was administered. After 5 days, the animals were submitted to controlled and progressive physical activity during 30 days. Ultrasonographic examinations were carried out before and after tendinitis induction (48 hours after and on experimental days 7, 12, 14, 21 28, 35 and 42), with tendon cross-sectional area (CSA), lesion cross-sectional area (L-CSA), L-CSA percentage, severity and echogenicity of the lesion, as well as collagen fiber alignment being evaluated. The result revealed reduction (P<0.05) in the L-CSA and in the degree of lesion echogenicity in function of time, but with difference (P<0.05) between groups only for L-CSA, with smaller values in TG. The treatment with PRP promotes greater reduction in the area of the lesion measured by ultrasound.
