E-mail: mbcastro@unb.br Palicourea marcgravii is considered the main toxic plant for livestock in Brazil, however, only the acute intoxication has been reported. This study reports the clinical and pathological changes of 10 goats chronically intoxicated by P. marcgravii. The animals received, daily, 0.2g/kg body weight of the fresh plant during 6 to 38 days. The main clinical signs were anorexia, lethargy, tachycardia, arrhythmia, positive jugular venous pulse and recumbency. At necropsies, the lesions were pale kidneys and myocardium, serous atrophy of cardiac fat, evident hepatic lobular pattern and pulmonary edema. The main microscopic findings were swelling and vacuolization of cardiomyocytes, cardiac necrosis and inflammatory mononuclear infiltrate of the myocardium. The kidneys showed diffuse vacuolar hydropic degeneration of the epithelium. These findings demonstrated that goats chronically intoxicated by P. marcgravii show distinct clinicopathologic features than those observed in the acute form of the poisoning. It is suggested that goats may be spontaneously become intoxicated by the ingestion of small repeated doses of the plant and that the poisoning can be confused with other diseases.

#12 - Risk factors, etiology and clinical aspects of mastitis in meat ewes of Parana, Brazil

Abstract in English:

Mastits is infrequent in meat ewes. However Santa Ines ewes have a high incidence of this disease and it is severe and difficult to treat. The goal of this study was to characterize clinical, epidemiological and etiological aspects of clinical mastitis in meat ewes reared in the north of Parana, Brazil. Fifith four farms were visited from October 2009 to September 2010. The surveyed data included frequency, breeds of sheep affected, lamb mortality rates, main clinical signs, attempts and outcome of treatment, method and period of weaning and management features. Seventy ewes with clinical mastitis were fully examinated and samples of mammary secretion were asseptically taken for bacteriological culture. Mastitis was identified in 39 farms (72.3%) as a relevant problem (mean frequency was 6,74%). Chronic and acute mastitis were observed in 69% and 31% of the examinated ewes, respectively. In both cases, phlegmonous mastitis was the most prevalent form (65.5%). Coagulase negative Staphylococccus (CNS) was the main isolated microorganism (54.5%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Arcanobacterium pyogenes (11.5%, each one). Mannheimia haemolytica was found in two cases. The risk factors for clinical mastitis were intensive management system and Santa Ines breed. Weaning after 120 days of lactation and isolation of affected ewes were associated with lower frequency of mastitis. Preventive measures recommended are daily cleaning of facilities and delayed weaning, mainly in Santa Ines flocks.

#13 - Clinical signs, lesions and productive and reproductive changes in goats poisoned by Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa (Convolvulaceae) that discontinued to ingest the plant, 31(11):953-960

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Oliveira C.A., Riet-Correa F., Dutra M.D., Cerqueira D.V., Araújo C.V. & Riet-Correa G. 2011. [Clinical signs, lesions and productive and reproductive changes in goats poisoned by Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa (Convolvulaceae) that discontinued to ingest the plant.] E-mail: griet@ufpa.br The aim of this research was to study the clinical signs, productive and reproductive performance, and lesions of goats poisoned by Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa after removal from the paddocks where the plant occurred. Thirty seven goats were divided into four groups: Group 1 consisted of 14 goats with poor body conditions and mild to severe nervous signs, acquired from a farm where the plant occurred; Group 2 (control) consisted of 10 goats which had also poor body conditions, but were acquired from a farm where the plant did not occur; Group 3 consisted of two goats with clinical signs of intoxication and which were slaughtered on the farm where they became poisoned; Group 4 consisted of 11 goats slaughtered as controls for the study of gross and histological lesions. The animals from Group 1 and 2 were evaluated for a period of 12 months on a farm located in the municipality of Castanhal/Pará, in a paddock where the plant did not occur. Six months later, the animals of Group 1 continued with poor body condition, rough hair coat, and nervous signs, especially intention tremors, what became with time less noticeable. In the same period, the goats of Group 2 gained an average of 13 kg body weight. Goats from Group 1 showed to be more susceptible to gastrointestinal parasites than those from Group 2. From the eight goats of Group 1 remaining on the farm only 4 became pregnant and delivered three kids which died shortly after birth, while all goats from Group 2 got pregnant and delivered healthy kids. At necropsy, two goats from Group 1 showed cerebellar atrophy. The main histological change observed in animals of Groups 1 and 3 was a decreased number of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. It is concluded that goats chronically intoxicated by I. carnea and which discontinued to ingest the plant but showed still clinical signs, even though diminished in intensity, had poor productive and reproductive performance and were highly susceptible to gastrointestinal parasites. For economical reasons, it is suggested that farmers cull affected animals which show still nervous signs 15 days after the end of I. carnea consumption. The most common permanent clinical signs are intention tremors, probably due to the loss of Purkinje cells, what could be primarily responsible for the malnutrition of the goats, the resulting reproductive failure and increased susceptibility to gastrointestinal parasites.

E-mail: elisabetesales@gmail.com Ehrlichia sp. and Anaplasma platys are Gram-negative micro-organisms, obligate intracellular parasites, residing in cytoplasmic vacuoles of leukocytes and platelets, found in peripheral blood or tissue. Few reports have been made about ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis in cats in Brazil, which are based on the presence of morulae in leukocytes and platelets, or by detecting antibodies. The objective of this study was to investigate the natural infection with Ehrlichia sp. and A. platys in cats in Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, by hematoscopia and DNA detection of these agents. Samples of whole blood and serum from 91 cats, regardless of race, gender and age. Blood count, serum biochemistry and PCR using primers for Ehrlichia sp. and A. platys were perfomed. Data from hematoscopia showed 9.89% of morulae only in platelets. The DNA of A. platys was detected in 13.18% of the 91 samples and 44.44% of the positive at hematoscopia. The DNA of Ehrlichia sp. was not detected in any sample. All animals studied did not show clinical signs neither positive laboratory results. The data suggest that domestic cats can serve as potential reservoirs for A. platys as asymptomatic form of related diseases.

E-mail: silvanammss@ufpi.br Conidiobolomycosis is reported in 25 farms, from January 2002 to December 2004, in the state of Piauí. The disease affects only sheep, mainly in April-June. The mean morbidity rate was 2.80%, but was higher in the first semester (2.1%), during the raining period, than in the second one (0.69%), during the dry period. Morbidity rate among flocks varied from 0.1-14.3%. Case fatality rate was 100%, and the clinical manifestation period varied from 1-5 weeks. Clinical signs were serous, mucous and/or bloody nasal secretion, respiratory distress, snoring respiration, cranium-facial asymmetry, exophthalmia, fever and progressive emaciation. Marked depression, sometimes with the head down or head pressing was observed in some cases. Gross, microscopic and ultrastructural lesions and identification of the agent are reported elsewhere. This is the first report of conidiobolomycosis in Brazil, which is endemic and has a high frequency in sheep in the State of Piauí, associated with high rainfalls (1000-1600mm annually) and high temperature (19-36°C).

[Clinical signs, distribution of the lesions in the central nervous system and epidemiology of rabies in northeastern Brazil.] E-mail: riet@cstr.ufcg.br Twenty four outbreaks of rabies in cattle, 4 in horses, 2 in sheep, and 2 in goats are reported in northeastern Brazil. All outbreaks occurred in the state of Paraíba, except one in horses that occurred in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. All outbreaks, except one in sheep, were probably transmitted by vampire-bats, but the transmission by foxes (Dusicyon vetulus) is also possible. Clinical signs were characteristic for distribution of the lesions in the central nervous system (CNS). In cattle, signs were mainly of the paralytic form of rabies, caused by lesions on the spinal cord, brain stem and cerebellum; but some animals showed also depression, excitation and other signs due to cerebral lesions. In 3 out of 5 horses, the main clinical signs were due to lesions in the cerebrum, and 2 had the paralytic form. From 4 sheep and 2 goats affected, 4 showed clinical signs of the paralytic form; but in 1 goat and 1 sheep the main clinical signs were caused by cerebral lesions. All affected animals, except 1 goat, had a clinical manifestation period of 2-8 days. The only gross lesions were distention of the urinary bladder in 4 cattle and distention of the rectum in 2 others. Two horses had skin lesions due to traumatic injury. Histologic lesions were diffuse non-suppurative encephalomyelitis and meningitis. In the horses, and in one goat with a clinical manifestation period of 35 days, the lesions were more severe, with neuronal necrosis, neuronophagia, and presence of axonal spheroids. Negri bodies were found in 87% (20/23) of the cattle cases examined histologically. In small ruminants Negri bodies were found in 83% (5/6) of the cases. In sheep, goats and cattle, Negri bodies were more frequent in the cerebellum, but they were found also in brain stem, spinal cord and cerebrum. In horses, Negri bodies were found in small amounts only in the cortex of one animal, and in the cortex and hippocampus of another. Histologic lesions and Negri bodies in the trigeminal ganglia were less frequent than in the CNS. These results show that in rabies of herbivores, clinical signs and distribution of lesions in the CNS are variable, so that for the diagnosis and adequate clinical evaluation and the histologic study of different areas of the CNS are necessary. This also suggests that when the fluorescent antibody test and mouse inoculation test are negative, they should be repeated with samples from different areas of the brain and spinal cord. Frequency data of diseases from 4 diagnostic laboratories were used to estimate cattle deaths due to rabies in 3 Brazilian states. In Paraíba, with a population of 918,262 cattle, the annual death rate is estimated in 8,609 heads. In Mato Grosso do Sul, with a population of 23 millions cattle, deaths caused by rabies are estimated in 149,500 heads, and in Rio Grande do Sul, with a cattle population of 13 millions, cattle deaths due to rabies are estimated in 13,000 to 16,250 heads. If these data are used to estimate cattle losses in Brazil, with a cattle population of 195 millions, it can be estimated that 842,688 deaths are caused annually by rabies.

#17 - Epidemiological and clinical aspects of the epizootic botulism of cattle in the State of São Paulo

Abstract in English:

In order to investigate epidemiological and clinical aspects of beef cattle mortalities caused by botulism, a syndrome popularly known as "doença da vaca caída", studies were carried out in 32 naturally affected 4 to 9 year old cows, 27 belonging to the Nellore breed and 5 to crossbred Nellore, all from 27 farms located in municipalities near Botucatu, State of São Paulo. The epidemiological anel clinical features were based, respectively, on the farm and herd managements, and on the general physical examination of the cows. Mouse bioassay anel complement microfixation tests were performed to detect the presence of botulinum toxins in liver samples. The results showed that the disease occurs in beef cattle of range breeding systems, reared under inadequate mineral nutrition and deficient health management. Pregnant and milking cows represented the group at risk, anel the incidence was higher during the rainy season (December to March), with morbidity and mortality rates of 3,2 ± 3,6%. Clinical examination revealed cows with no alterations of vital signs, behavior, visual and auditory acuities and skin sensation; but revealed ruminai hypomotility, anorexia, dehydration, flaccid para or tetraparesis with permanent recumbency, and a paretic or paralytic tongue. The diagnosis of botulism, involving type C and D toxins, was consistent with the epidemiological and clinical findings.

#18 - Experimental poisoning of sheep and goats by the leaves of Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae)

Abstract in English:

The toxicity of the leaves of Ricinus communis L. to sheep and goats was shown in experiments. The plant collected in Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro, was administered orally to eight sheep and six goats. Four sheep received 20 g/kg and another four 30 g/kg. The lethal dose for sheep was 30 g/ kg. Three goats received 30 g/kg, 35 g/kg, 37,5 g/kg and another three received 40 g/kg. None of the experimental goats died. The clinical-pathological picture in the sheep was characterized by neuro-muscular disturbances of peracute course. The symptoms were very uniform and only varied in intensity. Three sheep which received 30 g/kg, died. The clinical signs were seen immediately after the end of the administration of the plant and consisted in unsteady gait and slight instability. There were alternatively moments of restlesness and apathy, tendency to stay in sternal decubitus, drooped inferior lip, general muscle tremors and weakness, wry neck, and in those animals that died, convulsions. In the goats the symptoms were discrete; the animals showed unsteady gait and slight instability, drooped inferior lip. Some of the animals had tachypnoea. All goats recovered. No changes in the ruminal fluid of the sheep and goats were detected. No significant macroscopic or microscopic alterations were seen in the three sheep that died.

#19 - Experimental type C botulism in goats

Abstract in English:

The present paper describes the subcutaneous inoculation of goats with botulinum toxin type C to determine the doses required to cause various clinical signs, and to evaluate the bioassay as a means of laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis of botulism. Serial double dilutions in doses ranging from 15.6 to 500 DL50/kg were administered to 6 goats. The animals were checked daily to observe development of characteristic signs. Blood and liver samples were collected to detect the toxin by bioassay in mice. Doses of 500 and 250 DL50/kg induced acute botulism, death occurring between 42 and 46 hours post-inoculation, but the toxin was only detected in serum samples taken from the goat which received the larger dose. Animals inoculated with doses of 125, 62.5 and 31.3 DL50/kg developed the sub-acute forro, but the toxin could not be detected in their blood serum. The chronic forro of botulism was observed in those which received 15.6 DL50/kg doses and the toxin could not be demonstrated either in their serum samples. The results confinn that goats are highly susceptible to botulinum type C toxin and that these animals develop the sarne clinical signs as seen in bovines.
