[Perinatal lesions caused in lambs by feeding Tetrapterys multiglandulosa (Malpighiaceae) to sheep at different stages of their pregnancy.] E-mail: eqrural@nin.ufms.br In order to verify the effects of non-lethal doses of Tetrapterys multiglandulosa on ovine fetuses, experimental poisoning in sheep at different days of pregnancy was performed. Green leaves of shooting plants were administered to 9 pregnant ewes divided into three experimental groups. Sheep from Group 1 received four doses of 5g/kg of fresh leaves for 4 days; those from Group 2 received 10g/kg for 2 days; Group 3 sheep received a dose of 20g/kg for one day, and sheep from Group 4 did not receive the plant and served as negative controls. To check the plant toxicity, a male sheep (positive control) received 5g/kg until the onset of clinical signs. No signs of poisoning were observed in pregnant ewes; three lambs died 1-5 days after birth, and a fourth lamb died within 3 months after have been born. The positive control died after 38 days of daily consumption of the plant, presenting tachypnea, tachycardia, drowsiness, incoordination, weakness and sudden death. All four dead lambs and the positive control sheep were necropsied. The gross lesions were whitish areas in the myocardium, increased lobular pattern of the liver, dark red lungs, metabolization of pericardial fat, and ruminal distention with free gas. Histological findings were cardiac fibrosis, cardiomyocyte necrosis, pulmonary congestion and edema, and spongy degeneration in subcortical cerebral white matter. Tetrapterys multiglandulosa resulted toxic for ovine fetuses at doses that were not suffient to induce clinical signs in the pregnant ewes, demonstrating that the poisoning may be a cause of death of lambs soon after birth, even several months after the ingestion of the plant has been discontinued.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Helayel M.A., França T.N., Seixas J.N., Nogueira V.A., Caldas S.A. & Peixoto P.V. 2009. [Sudden death in cattle caused by ingestion of Pseudocalymma elegans (Bignoniaceae) in the county of Rio Bonito, Rio de Janeiro.] E-mail: michel_abdallavet@yahoo.com.br Natural poisoning by Pseudocalymma elegans, a plant that causes “sudden death” and only occurs in the State of Rio de Janeiro, is described in a cow. This condition was experimentally reproduced in three calves and three rabbits with the plant collected in the area where the deaths had occurred. Postmortem and histopathological examinations of the natural case in the cow did not reveal significant alterations. Oral administration of 1g/kg of the sprouts of P. elegans caused death of the calf 5 hours and 30 minutes after beginning of the administration. The dose of 0.5 g/kg caused death of another calf with onset of symptoms after 3 hours and 24 minutes and a course of 73 hours and 12 minutes. Animals that ingest borderline doses may show a longer course with a characteristic clinical picture of heart impairment. The dose of 0.25g/kg did not cause death, but only clinical signs. Heart palpitation and arrhythmia, increase of breathing frequency, reluctance in moving, positive venous pulse, ingurgitated jugular veins, falling down and peddling movements shortly before death, were observed. At postmortem examination the lesions were those of acute heart insufficiency, and histopathological examination revealed the typical kidney lesion (hydropic-vacular degeneration in the distal convoluted tubules) seen in poisoning by plants that cause “sudden death”. In the experimentally poisoned rabbits the clinical course was less than 1-2 minutes. In the kidney of two rabbits there was also the characteristic microscopic lesion. The presence of the plant in the county of Rio Bonito had not been known by the veterinarians. It is concluded that the plant could be more toxic than described before.

E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br A condition with enlargement of the oral cleft in horses was studied. The enlargement of varied extension was uni or bilateral. The cheek mucosa of the labial commissure showed slight erosions. During chewing there was loss of small amounts of grass and saliva through the oral cleft. The affected horses were in good nutritional condition. Histopathological studies of tissues obtained by biopsia, revealed a superficial epidermitis. The pastures consisted of Panicum maximum grass (varieties Tanzânia, Mombaça, Tobiatã and Colonião) which was mature, tall, lignified, with leaves of cutting edges. Based on epidemiological, clinical and histopathological data, it was concluded that the lesions were caused by the hard grass, favored by the way horses pull the tall grass and chew it.

E-mail: diomedes@ufpa.br Data on the clinical-pathological aspects and on the epidemioloy of a disease in horses, characterized by phototsensitization, which occurs in northeastern of Pará, Brazil, are presented. Of a total of 40 horses examined clinically, post-mortem examination was performed on seven. Due to the characteristic lesions found on the non-pigmented skin, the macroscopic and histological alterations in the liver, and knowing that Brachiaria grasses contain saponins with toxic properties, which cause liver lesions and photosensitization in cattle and sheep, it is concluded that this disease in horses is caused by grassing exclusively Brachiaria humidicola.

Papilionoideae), p.135-142

Abstract in English:

Oliveira F.N., Rech R.R., Rissi D.R., Barros R.R. & Barros C.S.L. 2005. [Poisoning in swine from the ingestion of Aeschynomene indica (Leg.Papilionoideae) seeds.] Papilionoideae). Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 25(3):135-142. Depto Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, 97105-900 Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br A spontaneous outbreak of a neurological disease in swine caused by the ingestion of Aeschynomene indica seeds and the reproduction of the disease in the same animal species are reported. The natural outbreak occurred in a pig-raising facility in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. On the premises there were 100 pigs (20 breeding sows and 80 young weaned pigs from several categories) that were fed a ration made by mixing 50% of corn bran, 25% of soybean bran, 5% of a commercial mix of vitamins and minerals, and 20% of broken rice contaminated with 40% of A. indica seeds. Although all pigs apparently ingested the same ration, only 45-day-old pigs were affected; morbidity, mortality and lethality rates were respectively 25%-40%, 8.5%-20%; and 25%-66%. Clinical signs appeared 24 hours after the beginning of feeding of A. indica seeds contaminated ration and included variable degrees of incoordinated gait, falls, sternal recumbency with the hind limbs in a wide base stance, lateral recumbency and death. It was not possible to ascertain how many pigs recovered nor the time frame of recovery. One pig was euthanatized and necropsied in the premises. The poisoning was reproduced in 5 young pigs (A-E) which were fed a ration containing 10% (Pig A), 15% (Pig B) and 20% (Pigs C-E) of A. indica seeds, and in one older pig (Pig F) which was fed a ration with 16.5% of A. indica seeds. Pigs A, B and F were euthanatized and Pigs C-E died of an acute disease respectively 16, 21 and 24 hours after the beginning of the experiment. Clinical signs were similar to those observed in pigs of the spontaneous outbreak. Necropsy findings included marked hyperemia of the encephalic leptomeninges of all pigs; there were large amounts of A. indica seeds in the stomach and reddening of the intestinal wall and bloody intestinal content in Pigs C-E. A hematoma was observed in the lungs of Pig C. The histopathological findings in the brain of pigs fed rations with larger concentrations (20%) of A. indica seeds (C-E) included congestion, edema and hemorrhage and swollen vascular endothelia with focal symmetrical distribution in several brain nuclei and in the telencephalic cortex. In Pigs A and B, and in Pig F, the case which received the lower dosage of the seeds of A. indica, and in the pig from the spontaneous outbreak, histopathological changes in the brain consisted of discrete focal symmetrical areas of malacia in which closely packed Gitter cells and astrocytosis, and capillaries with swollen endothelium obliterated the normal neuropil. The symmetrical malacic foci caused by the ingestion of A. indica seeds in swine affected cerebellar and vestibular nuclei, putamen, and the mesencephalic oculomotor and red nuclei. This indicates that the A. indica seeds ingestion was responsible for the neurological condition, that it may be fatal and seems to affect equally young and older swine. The clinical outcome and pathological changes were dose-dependent, and the brain lesions progressed from damaged blood vessels to vasogenic edema, hemorrhage and malacia.

E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br Cases of respiratory disease were diagnosed in five out of 23 cattle (21. 7%) after they wete fed moldy damaged sweet potatoes (lpomoea batatas) on a small farm in the county of São Vicente do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Of those five cattle, three died spontaneously and another one was euthanatized for necropsy while showing advanced respiratory clinicai signs. The disease manifested itself approximately 24 hours after the ingestion of the sweet potatoes and lasted from 1 to 4 days. Clinicai signs included dyspnea (labored breathing and abdominal respiration), tachypnea, extended neck with Iow carriage of the head and rhythmical flaring of the nostrils. Two cows were necropsied. Necropsy findings included distended pale and rubbery lungs which failed to collapse when the thorax was open, and marked pulmonar interstitial emphysema and edema. Lymphoid hyperplasia was observed in the hilar nodes and spleen. Histologically, the lesions were those of interstitial pneumonia. Alveolar septa were thickened by fibroblasts and inflammatory cells, and there was hypertrophy and hyperplasia of type li pneumocytes; the interlobular septa were distended by edema and emphysema. The culture of the moldy sweet potatoes yielded Fusarium solani and Fusarium oxysporum.

E-mail: rmtmed@cstr.ufpb.br Three outbreaks ofnitrate poisoning are reported from the semiarid region ofthe state of Paràíba, northeastem Brazil. One outbreak caused by Echinochloa polystachya (capim-mandante) and two others caused by Pennisetum purpureum (capim-elefante) occurred at the end ofthe dry season, after the first raios. ln one ofthe outbreaks caused by Pennisetum purpureum part of the pasture had been fertilized with cattle manure. Five out of 11 cattle died on one farm, 27 out of81 on another, and 3 out of9 on a third one. Clinicai sigos were anorexia, respiratory distress, teeth grinding, depression or hyperexitability, tremors, abdominal contractions, salívation, nasal discharge, uncoordinated gait, cyanosis, and finally recumbency. Nitrates and nitrites in the blood of affected cattle and pastures were determined by the diphenylamine test. It is suggested that the main reason for nitrate accumulation in the grasses was the prolonged draught followed by rain. ln one ofthe outbreaks caused by Pennisetum purpureum, another reason was probably the fertilization of the soil with cattle manure.

#28 - Botulism outbreaks in cattle in Brazil associated with contaminated water, 21(2):43-48

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Dutra I.S., Dobereiner J., Rosa I.V., Souza L.A.A. & Nonato M. 2001. [Botulism outbreaks in cattle in Brazil associated with contaminated water] Surtos de botulismo em bovinos no Brasil associados à ingestão de água contaminada. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 21(2):43-48. Depto Apoio, Produção e Saúde Animal, Unesp-Campus de Araçatuba, Cx. Postai 533, Araçatuba, SP 16050-680, Brazil. Botulism in cattle occurs by ingestion of botulinum toxin C and/or D. Seven outbreaks of the poisoning in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo are reported. The clinical and pathological data, epidemiology and laboratory findings indicate a possible intake of the toxin through contaminated water. The average mortality rate was 20.1%, with 99.2% lethality and 31.62% morbidity. From about 9,000 cattle envolved in the outbreaks, 2,844 animals died, predominantly with a byperacute and acute clinical picture. The high morbidity rates were observed within a short period and affected all categories of cattle, with a clinical and pathological picture characterized by paresis and paralysis of the muscles of locomotion, swallowing and mastigation, with abscence of gross lesions at post-mortem examination. The outbreaks were related to the presence of decomposed animal carcasses or vegetal material in the drinking water. Botulinum toxins C and/or D were detected in water samples, víscera and blood serum of a considerable number of materials examined.

RESUMO.- Dutra I.S., Dobereiner J., Rosa I.V., Souza L.A.A. & Nonato M. 2001. [Botulism outbreaks in cattle in Brazil associated with contaminated water] Surtos de botulismo em bovinos no Brasil associados à ingestão de água contaminada.

#29 - Relationship between foamy macrophages in the liver of cattle and the ingestion of Brachiaria spp, 19(2):79-83

ABSTRACT.- Driemeier D., Döbereiner J., Peixoto P.V. & Brito M.F. 1999. [Relationship between foamy macrophages in the liver of cattle and the ingestion of Brachiaria spp.] Relação entre macrófagos espumosos ("foam cells") no fígado de bovinos e ingestão de Brachiaria spp no Brasil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 19(2):79-83. Depto Patologia Clínica Veterinária, Faculdade de Veterinária, UFRGS, Cx. Postal 15094, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. To establish the etiological relationship and the appearance of foamy macrophages in the liver of cattle from tropical regions of Brazil, Iiver samples from the files of the Pathology Section of Embrapa-Projeto Sanidade Animal, Rio de Janeiro, were reviewed. A total of 55 liver samples of cattle which died from different causes between 1970 and 1991 were reexamined. Only samples of animals which grazed known pastures were reviewed. Foamy macrophages were not seen in the samples from 1970 to 1975, although 40 samples (72%) were from this period. Foamy macrophages were observed from 1976 on, coinciding with the introduction of Brachiaria decumbens from Australian seeds into Brazil. Some samples were from cattle with histories of photosensitization, which were at that time attributed to Pithomyces chartarum. The results of this study indicate that the liver changes are related to prolonged ingestion of Brachiaria spp.

RESUMO.- Driemeier D., Döbereiner J., Peixoto P.V. & Brito M.F. 1999. [Relationship between foamy macrophages in the liver of cattle and the ingestion of Brachiaria spp.] Relação entre macrófagos espumosos ("foam cells") no fígado de bovinos e ingestão de Brachiaria spp no Brasil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 19(2):79-83. Depto Patologia Clínica Veterinária, Faculdade de Veterinária, UFRGS, Cx. Postal 15094, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil.

#30 - Sudden death in cattle by Mascagnia sp (Malpighiaceae) in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, 18(1):16-20

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Gava A., Cristani J., Branco J. V., Neves D.S., Mondadori A.J. & Sousa R.S. 1998. [Sudden death in cattle by Mascagnia sp (Malpighiaceae) in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil.] In the coastal areas of the State of Santa Catarina occurs a disease in cattle characterized by "sudden death". The disease was reproduced in bovines by oral administration of Mascagnia sp. Single doses of 5 g/kg of the fresch leaves of Mascagnia sp caused non-lethal poisoning; single doses of 7,5 g/kg caused letharpoisoning in one of two bovines and doses of 10 g/kg death in two others. In the experiments clinical manifestations were observed when the animals were exercised. They consisted in weakness, swollen jugular vein, slight muscular tremors and sometimes sudden contractions; tachycardia, already observed before the exercise, became more intense. At the end the animals suddenly laid down or fell on their side. The course of poisoning in those two animals which were followed up till death, was 40 and 75 minutes. The highest doses given (15 and 20 g/kg) caused a protratecd course; the animals got slow and apathic, avoiding any movements. They were found dead, 7h45min and 21 hours after the first clinical signs. These two last experiments show the importance of exercise regarding the onset of symptoms and the occurrence of "sudden death". The main post-mortem findings were intense red discoloration of the mucosa of the small intestine and oedema of the gallbladder wall. The main histological alteration was hydropic vacuolar degeneration of the tubular epithelium of the kidney in three of the five bovines which died.

RESUMO.- Gava A., Cristani J., Branco J. V., Neves D.S., Mondadori A.J. & Sousa R.S. 1998. [Sudden death in cattle by Mascagnia sp (Malpighiaceae) in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil.]
