#31 - Meat meal as source of Salmonella on a poultry farm

Abstract in English:

The presence of Salmonella on a commercial broiler chicken farm was investigated. Twenty two Salmonella serotypes were detected in meat meal, feed, rat faeces and poultry litter. The results suggest that the diet ingredients were the principal source of Salmonella infections to the farm, spreading them among the birds. The behaviour of the Salmonella isolates, as subjected to the 14 antimicrobial agents, is also reported. The levels of resistance were: carbecillin (94.23%), tetracycline (92.31%), nalidixic acid (73.08%), nitrofurantoin, (65.38%), cephalothin (59.61%), linco-spectin (44.23%), kanam) in (36.54%), amikacin (25.0%), neomycin (23.09%), chloranfenicol (19.23%), ampicillin (11.38%), cefoxitin (11.54%), cotrimazine (11.54%) and gentamicin (1.92% ).

#32 - Behavioral study of the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus (Chiroptera) related with the attack rate on cattle in captivity

Abstract in English:

The objective of this study was to determine the attack rate of vampire bats, Desmodus rotundus (Geoffroy, 1810), on cattle kept in captivity. It was observed that the bats returned to wounds previously made by them, but without a rigorous pattern of repetition. New wounds were made almost everyday, while old wounds were temporarily or definitively abandoned. Vampire bats fed on all regions of the body, although showed preference for the front legs, dorsal region, hind legs and withers. Finally, a great number of wounds were opened, whereas only a few were utilized on the sarne night.

#33 - Salmonella contamination in animal-derived-meals used in feed manufacturing

Abstract in English:

From three feed factories in the State of São Paulo, Brasil, 204 samples of animal-derived meals were collected, of which 158 were meat-meals, 25 were feather-meals, 16 were feather and viscera-meals, three were viscera-meals and two were bone-meals. All of them were-t:o be employed in feed mixtures. The samples were bacteriologically processed and from the total 204, as many as 77 were contaminated with salmonellae, from one to six serotypes being identified in individual samples. The proportion of infected samples were respectively: 39% of the meat-meals, 16% of the feather-meals, 63% of the feather and viscera-meals, 33% of the viscera-meals and 50% of the bone-meals. The most frequent represented serotypes were Salmonella cerro (19 samples) and S. havana (17 samples). Better results were obtained by the use of selenitenovobiocin broth than by employement of tetrathionate-novobiocin broth, in both cases after a pre-enrichment in Ringer 1/4.
