E-mail: alschild@terra.com.br An outbreak of spontaneous Baccharis coridifolia poisoning in horses in July 2008 is reported from southern Brazil. The poisoning affected three mares out of four that were transported from the state of Paraná to a farm in the municipality of Acegua, Rio Grande do Sul, and occurred 3 days after arrival of the animals in a paddock with sprouting B. coridifolia. The fourth mare introduced to another paddock without B. coridifolia was not affected. The mares had received only one third of the concentrate ration previously ingested and stayed during the night in a stall. Clinical signs were abdominal discomfort, increased cardiac and respiratory rate, anorexia, hypermotility of the gut, cecal tympany, and diarrhea. The clinical course was of 18-36 hours. One affected mare survived after symptomatic treatment. Gross lesions were severe congestion, hemorrhages, edema and ulcers of the glandular stomach. Congestion, edema and hemorrhages were also observed in ileum, cecum and large colon. Histologic examination revealed degeneration and necrosis of the aglandular epithelium of the stomach, gastritis and enteritis with infiltration by mononuclear cells and neutrophils, edema of the mucosa, and dilatation of lymphatic vessels. One horse was poisoned experimentally with 1g/kg body weight of B. coridifolia. Clinical signs and lesions were similar to those observed in the spontaneous cases.

#3 - Experimental poisoning by Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae) in cattle, 18(2):69-75

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Varaschin M.S., Barros C.S.L. & Jarvis B.B. 1998. [Experimental poisoning by Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae) in cattle.] Thirteen calves were fed single doses varying from 0.5 to 5g/kg of either freshly harvested or dried Baccharis coridifolia. One calfwas fed 4 daily doses of 0,5g/kg of the dried plant. Two calves did not receive the plant and served as controls. The plant material was harvested each month from July 1991 to May 1992 and then in March 1993, and was analysed for its contente in macrocyclic trichothecenes. When in flower the female and mate plant specimens were both analysed and fed separately to calves. The levels of macrocyclic trichothecenes and their glucosides were much higher in the flowering female plants compared with the levels observed in those plants not in flower and in the flowering male plants. Ten calves either died or were euthanatized due to the toxicosis. Two calves fed the female flowering plant got sick and died, while 3 calves fed the flowering male plant did not develop the toxicosis. Clinical signs in the poisoned calves were anorexia, dehydration, ruminal atony, abdominal distension and pain, liquid diarrhea, dry muzzle, imbalance in the hindlimbs and sternal recumbency. Main pathological findings included necrosis of the gastrointestinal tube, particularly in the forestomachs and in the lymphoid tissues except for the thymus. The latter suggests an effect upon the B cells of the lymphoid tissue. The distribution of the lesions in the digestive and lymphoid systems was sistematicaily determined. lt is concluded that the macrocyclic trichothecenes present in the plant account for the lesions observed in the toxicosis and that the female flowering plant is substantially more toxic than the flowering mate plants or plants not in flower. This difference in toxicity is due to the difference in macrocyclic trichothecenes contents.

RESUMO.- Varaschin M.S., Barros C.S.L. & Jarvis B.B. 1998. [Experimental poisoning by Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae) in cattle.]

#4 - Senecio spp. POISONING OF HORSES IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL, 17(1):36-40

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Gava A. & Barros C.S.L. 1997. Senecio spp. poisoning of horses in southern Brazil.[ Intoxicação por Senecio spp. em equinos no sul do Brasil] Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 17(1):36-40. Departamento de Patologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS 97119-900, Brazil. Cases of seneciosis in horses occurring in four farms in the state of Santa Catarina and in another in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, are reported. S. brasiliensis or S. oxyphyllus or both were detected in four of the tive properties. Five horses (one on each property) were necropsied, and tissues for histopathological examination were collected from four horses. Neurological signs, such as depression, ataxia, aimeless walking, circling, head pressing, faulty prehension of food, dysphagia and blindness were consistently observed. Other signs included inappetence, loss of weight, colic, subcutaneous edema, icterus and photodermatitis. At necropsy the livers were firmer and darker than normal and had accentuation of lobular pattern. Edema of the mesentery and ascites were observed in one horse. Main histopathological changes consisted of hepatic chiefly periportal fibrosis, hepatomegalocytosis and biliary hyperplasia. Marked cholestasis and morphological evidence of hepatic encephalopathy were seen respectively in the tiver and brain of one of the horses.

#5 - Factors which influence the toxicity of Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae): an experimental study in rabbits

Abstract in English:

Experimental studies were performed on Baccharis coridifolia D.C. (Compositae), a small shrub with the popular name "mio-mio", one of the more important poisonous plants of southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, in arder to find out possible variations in toxicity due to its origin, sex, plant parts and annual variability. Doses which varied from 0.085 to 5.44 g/kg of the dried powdered aerial parts of B. coridifolia were administered in aqueous suspension by stomach tube to 49 adult rabbits. The plant material was collected in five different localities, from four sites in Brazil and one in Uruguay, in the flowering/seeding stage and separated by sex; in some regions collections were made in two successive years. From three of the sites additionally only the leaves of female plants were used for the experiments. Sixteen animals died and one that showed severe symptoms was euthanized together with the contral animal. Nineteen animals that showed slight to severe symptoms, recovered. First symptoms after the administration of the plant were seen, in the fatal cases from 6h32min to 1 day 6h15min, and in the non-fatal cases from 4h03min to 24h00min, after ingestion. The clinical course, in the fatal cases, varied from approximately 6h00min to 4 days 20h23min and, in the non-fatal cases, from 9h25min to 11 days 3h45min. The length of time from first administration of the plant till death varied from 14h20min to 5 clays 2h55min. The lethal dose varied from 0.17 to 5.44 g/kg. The main symptoms were anorexia, modifications in the form, size and consistency of the faeces and hair loss. The main post-mortem alterations were found in the stomach, caecum and liver. There was red colouration of the stomach mucosa. ln the caecum the surface of the mucosa was rough and red and the wall was oedematous. The liver was clearer than normal with perceptible lobulation. Histopathologically these lesions correspond to 1) coagulative necrosis associated with haemorrhages and oedema of the stomach mucosa, 2) haemorrhagic necrosis of the mucosa and oedema and/or haemorrhages of the submucosa of the caecum and 3) cloudy swelling and/or vacuolization of the liver. Greater toxicity of B. coridifolia was associated with more southerly sites of collection in Brazil. The female plant was up to 32 times more poisonous than the male plant; the whole aerial pa1ts of the plant were up to 16 times more poisonous when compared with only the leaves. There was up to a fourfold variation in toxicity from year to year. These differences can be explained by variations in the type and the amount of macrocyclic trichothecenes accumulated in the different parts of the plant, which are believed to be absorbed from the soil fungus Myrothecium verrucaria which produces them. B. coridifolia was compared with B. megapotamica var. weirii, which does not show these variations.

#6 - Experimental poisoning in horses by Baccharis coridifolia (Compositae) eqüinos

Abstract in English:

The fresh flowering and seeding Baccharis coridifolia DC, a herbaceous plant known as miomio, was collected in Santa Maria County, State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and fed to 5 horses. Doses from 0.125 to 0.5 g/kg caused lethal poisoning with 12 to 26 hours course, 0.06 g/kg caused severe disease with recuperation in 9 days and 0.03 g/kg only slight symptoms for a few hours. The dinical manífestations were mainly due to digestive disturbances. They were anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, dehydration, polydipsia, tachycardia, tachyphigmia, tachypnoea, dyspnoea, restlesness, locomotor instability and death. The main post-mortem findings were distension by large amounts of liquid of the distal third of the jejunum, caecum and large colon, oedema of the wall and congestion of the mucosa of the glandular portion of the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, caecum and large colon. ln the caecum and colon major the mucosa was covered by fibrin; as well there were petechiae in the caecum and large colon. The main histological lesions consisted of necrosis of the mucosa and oedema of the submucosa, in the caecum and large colon, and to a lesser degreee of the stomach.

#7 - Experimental poisoning of goats by Baccharis megapotamica var. weirii (Compositae)

Abstract in English:

The toxicity of the shoots of Baccharis megapotamica var. weirii to goats was shown in na experiment in which the mature flowerless plant, collected in Lages, Santa Catarina, was administrated orally to 11 goats. Doses of 2 g/kg or more of the fresh plant caused the death of all goats. The first symptoms were observed from 4 to 13 h after the beginning of administration of the plant. Death occurred in a period of 10h54min to 112h28min after ingestion. The clinical-pathological changes were characterized by disturbance of the digestive tract. The main symptoms were anorexia, ruminal atonia, increase of the intestinal peristaltism, modification in the consistency of the faeces, tachycardia and dispnoea; also observed were restlessness, depression, muscular tremor, dehydration, sialorrhoea and in the terminal phase hypothermia. The alterations in the ruminal fluid were acidosis with decrease of the bacterial activities and death of the protozoa. Post-mortem findings consisted of oedema and congestion of the mucosa of the rumen, reticulum, abomasum and parts of the small and large intestine. Histologically the lesions were characterized by necrosis with picnosis and karyorrhexia of the mucosal epithelium of the forestomachs, abomasum and intestines and the lymphoid tissue of the spleen as well as the externai lymphnodes.

#8 - Experimental poisoning of sheep by Baccharis megapotamica var. megapotamica e var. weirii (Compositae)

Abstract in English:

The shoots of Baccharis megapotamica var. megapotamica, collected in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, and the mature flowerless plant of the variety weirii, collected in Lages, Santa Catarina, were shown to be poisonous to sheép. Var. megapotamica was given orally in single doses to 12 sheep, and similarly, var. weirii to 8 sheep. The lethal dosis was between 10 and 15 g/kg for var. megapotamica and 2 to 3 g/kg for var. weirii. Thus var. weirii was approximately 5 times as toxic as var. megapotamica. First symptoms were observed from 4h15min to 9h20min after administration of var. megapotamica and from 4h10min to 9h after var. weirii was given. The total period from ingestion of the plant to the animal's death was 23h55min to 71h10min with var. megapotamica and 36h25min to 105h55min with var. weirii. The clinical-pathological manifestations of poisoning were similar for both varieties, affected the digestive tract and were of acute progression. The main symptoms were anorexia, ruminal atonia, tachycardia and tachypnoea. Restlessness, depression, muscular tremors, volumous abdomen, dehydration, sialorrhoea and modification of faeces consistency were observed, as well as hypothennia in the terminal phase. Post-mortem findings were oedema in the wall of the rumen and reticulum (mainly in poisoning by var. weirii) and congestion of the mucosa of the rumen, reticulum, abomasum and parts of the small and large intestine. These effects were more severe in poisoning by var. weirii than by var. megapotamica. Histological observations were severe necrosis of the epithelium of the rumen and reticulum, slight to severe necrosis of the abomasal epithelium (only in the poisoning by var. weirii) and necrosis of the lymphocytic elements 'in the lymphoid tissue of the spleen, mesenteric lympho nodes and Peyer's patches (mainly in poisóning by the var. megapotamica). To date, occurrence of natural poisoning of sheep by this plant has been registered only once, that by var. weirii in Santa Catarina. Some data on poisonous plants to sheep in Latin America through a literature review are presented. Aspects of the poisonous action of trichothecenes and B. megapotamica var. megapotamica and var. weini are discussed.

#9 - Experimental poisoning by Baccharis megapotamica var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Compositae) of rabbits

Abstract in English:

The dried and powdered aerial parts of Baccharis megapotamica Sprengel var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Baker) Barroso, plants which occur mainly in Southern Brazil, were toxic when administered by stomach tube to 68 rabbits; 42 of these died. The two varieties of the plant showed similar toxic properties, but there were a few differences. In both varieties the toxic symptoms were practically the sarne independently of its growing stage, the sex of the plants or its origin. However there were large differences in the lethal dose of the two varieties. It was between 2 and 4 g/kg for variety megapotamica and between 0,34 and 0,68 g/kg for var. weirii (dried plant material). Thus var. weirii was about 5 times more toxic than var. megapotamica. Fatal poisoning was acute with both varieties. In most cases symptoms caused by var. megapotamica were seen during 20 hours to 4 days; with var. weirii they were seen in most cases during less than 15 hours. Death occurred in most cases between 22 and 73 hours, and between 12 and 56 hours respectively after administration of the plant. The main symptoms shown by the rabbits intoxicated by var. megapotamica were anorexia and modified feces, mainly in the form of diarrhea, in most cases with the presence of mucus and blood. Anorexia was observed also in poisoning by var. weirii, but there were few cases of diarrhea and the faeces never contained mucus and blood. The main post-mortem findings in the rabbits poisoned by the two varieties were seen in the digestive tract, mainly in the stomach and caecum. The mucosa of the stomach was reddened, especially in the cranial part. The content of the caecum had a liquid-pasty consistency. Dark red slightly elevated and rough áreas were seen on the caecal mucosa. The caecal wall was frequently edematous. There were also lesions in the small and large intestine. In the small intestine lesions were seen only in poisoning by var. weirii and consisted of a reddened mucosa; in the colon and rectum severe lesions were seen only in poisoning by var. megapotamica and consisted of diphteroid necrosis. Both varieties produced livers that were almost always clearer than normal and slightly mottled. The histological lesions were necrosis and hemorrhages in the upper portion of the stomach mucosa, but necrosis of the parietal cells were more severe with var. megapotamica, being only slight with var. weirii. The mucosa of the small intestine only showed congestion and hemorrhages with var. weirii. The most important lesions were seen in the caecum, where there were hemorrhages and necrosis of the mucosa, and edema of the submucosa. Granulocytes were present, in most cases in small arnounts, but were generally more numerous with var. megapotamica, were some showed karyorrhexis; karyorrhexis was not seen after poisoning by var. weirii. In the initial part of the colon there were more hemorrhages and necrosis of the mucosa with var. weirii. However in the mucosa of the distal part of the colon and of the rectum, hemorrhages and necrosis with the presence of nuclear detritos (debris) on the surface of the mucosa, and necrosis with cariorrexia of the epithelial cells of the glands, were more common with var. megapotamica. Basically the sarne lesions were seen in the liver following poisoning by both varieties; there was severe tumefaction of the hepatic cells of the whole lobule, being especially severe in the periportal area. In the lymphatic tissue of the spleen and vermiform appendice of the caecum, necrosis characterized by cariorrexia of the lymphoid cells in the follicles, was produced by both varieties, but was more frequent and more pronounced with var. weirii. The two varieties, dried and milled, lost some of their toxicity, when kept in closed bottles; but when stored unmilled in cotton sacs, the plants kept their toxicity entirely. Rabbits, to which the two varieties were given, various times in sublethal doses with monthly intervals, did not adquire tolerance against the toxic properties of the plant.

#10 - Experimental poisoning of bovines by Baccharis megapotamica var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Compositae)

Abstract in English:

The aerial parts of Baccharis megapotamica Sprengel var. megapotamica and var. weirii (Baker) Barroso, plants which occur in moist areas of southem Brazil, were toxic to cattle. The two varieties showed similar toxic properties, however there were large differences in their lethal doses. These were between 3 and 4 g/kg for var. megapotamica and 1 g/kg for var. weirii (fresh plant material). Fatal poisoning was acute with both varieties, involving mainly the digestive system. The main symptoms shown by the experimental bovines were anorexia and paralysis of the rumen. Tympanitis, salivation, swaying gait, high temperature, increased heart rate and moaning also occurred in some animals. Liquid diarrhea was seen in 3 of the 8 fatal poisonings by var. megapotamica and in only one not fatal poisoning by var. weirii. Increased thirst, restlesness and muscular tremors were seen in poisoning by var. megapotamica. Respiratory rates were increased considerably by poisoning with var. weirii. The most important post-mortem findings were edema of the rumenal wall (seen in 3 of the 4 fatal poisonings by var. weirii, but in only one of the 8 fatal poisonings by var. megapotamica) and congestion of the mucosa of the rumen, abomasum, small intestine, caecum and large intestine. The liver was clearer than normal in 5 of the 8 fatal poisonings by var. megapotamica, but in only one of the 4 fatal poisonings by var. weirii. There were hemorrhages in the epi- and endocardium. The main histological lesions were seen in the rumen, liver and lymphatic tissue. The rumen showed necrosis characterized by pycnosis and karyorrhexis of the epithelial cells, mainly of the stratum spinosum. Coagulative necrosis and lysis of the hepatic cells and shock bodies were seen in the intermediate zone of the hepatic lobule. Lymphatic tissue (spleen, lymphnodes, Peyers plaques) showed necrosis characterized by pycnosis and-karyorrhexis of the lymphoid cells. Poisoning under natural conditions by B. megapotamica var. weirii has been reported and observed, however it is said that cattle do not eat var. megapotamica. Dried plants of the var. megapotamica were still toxic after being stored for a year.
